Carmella definitely is a user. The key here is she doesn't even necessarily realize it, she turned on immediately after the situation with AJ improved. She is used to taking subversive actions with Tony to get what she wants as part of the mob culture. A "normal" person identifies it immediately. This is a way of the series showing that yes, Carmella isn't a good person either, whether responsible herself or as a victim and exhibiting this as a learned behavior. She essentially doesn't know how to function in a normal relationship at this point.
@czos9239
Жыл бұрын
Yep, had to look up the S/E so it wouldn't be a spoiler (it all blends for me) as she's not above also directly threatening others if "required:" _When Jeannie fails to persuade Joan to write a letter of recommendation for Meadow, Carmela presents Joan with a ricotta pie and a folder of Meadow's high school transcripts. When Joan refuses to write the letter, Carmela implicitly threatens her. Later, Jeannie informs Carmela that Joan has caved and agreed to write the letter._ In this ep she says (paraphrased): "You better watch your step." There's also mention that Carmella gets confused over intelligence and sexual orientation. So potentially used to a life of brutish threatening men. Little wonder she would choose that brutish path herself when it's useful.
@Hexon66
Жыл бұрын
But the point is... it *IS* a normal relationship, if we as viewers are willing to take a cold hard look at ourselves. David Strathairn's character (the teacher, don't remember the name) definitely was used by Carmella, but "regular' people do that all the time. In fact, if we consider him a regular person, what was his motivation? He abandoned all his principles as an educator. Why? To keep the supply of sex with the mom flowing? He was used by her, but definitely not a victim, he was using her as well. The show displays a mob family, but it's not entirely ignoring the shortcomings of the 'regular' viewers.
@liteflightify

@@Hexon66 I think that’s what some people tend to miss about this show. Yes, the series is entrenched in “mob culture”. But the show has a rather nihilistic view of human dynamics in general. David Strathairn’s character is presented as being no better than Carmela, at least as far as their “relationship” went. However, he can make himself feel superior in the situation due to not being a part of “mob culture”. The series has always had an “everyone is different degrees of horrible” viewpoint.

Carmella's father is on to her "woe is me" nonsense.He's probably had a lifetime of it. The last time Carmella was as depressed as this was when the old jewish shrink told her some home truths about the man she was married to and the deeds she was condoning by continuing to be married to him etc... Anytime she gets a doze of reality she goes into self-pity mode and her dad is likely immune to it all by now.
Yup, Tony B was one of David Chase's red herrings. In the words of Shawshank Red Tony B had become "institutionalized". So did Feech and others on the various crews.

"Her whole asshole rotted out" when Christopher said that I almost fell out the chair.
It seems totally realistic to me that the one Tony didn't sleep with, nearly blows up his whole life. I am not a big believer in mysticism, but I have to say there is this really spooky thing that happens: You're doing bad shit all the time and the one time you actually try not to do it, it blows up in your face like you did do it. I grew up in the ghetto and I saw this happen so many times. The second somebody starts trying to like do the right thing or get their shit together, life just blows up in their face. It's like the universe is punishing you for trying to change. It's so weird.
@GeneralProfessor
Жыл бұрын
I went through that and in order to reach the other side my punishments were depression, addiction and isolation. From my experience one way of looking at this phenomenon is that the devil wants his due. When you enter his service, so to speak, you get everything you desire and it all seems to be for free. But nothing ever is. Everything comes at a cost sooner or later. So the moment you decide to change and leave his service he knocks at your door and he wants payment in full for everything he gave you. You truly want out? Not only will you need to give up all the benefits, you will also need to pay for all your bad actions. At that point you have two choices: Give up and try to dodge the obligation while in the process cursing your family and children to pay for you. Or pick up your cross and bear it yourself. Repent, accept that you will have to suffer for every littlest bad thing you ever did, and pray for strength to make it through. If this is a topic that interests you I can't recommend enough the book Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. It's a story about a young guy whose conscience doesn't care that he can perfectly rationalize the crime he has committed. He has every logical arguement for why his actions were "good" but the core of his being won't let him rest until he repents and suffers for it. Only then can he find some semblance of peace.

I actually think it's that when people are doing things they know are wrong, they take extra steps to protect themselves. However, when they start trying to correct their behaviour they tend to behave more carelessly in other areas. Just because Tony didn't sleep with Ade, that doesn't mean that him travelling with her at 3 am trying to score coke isn't still a really dodgy thing to do.

One thing I will say, you said it’s only a matter of time when AJ wanted to go at his dad. Even forgetting that a guy like tiny can have someone killed with a look, he will always remain a very intimidating guy. Those shoulders, the way he leans over you. Gandolfini is tremendous in this, really really tremendous.

The priest and Carmela are 2 actors with interesting characters in Nurse Jackie. Changes the dynamic completely. That's a great series if you guys appreciate Edie Falco's work on Sopranos. Carmela is a horrible person. It’s easy to emote sympathy for her while watching because the writers purposefully create a sympathetic/quasi-victim, co-dependent narrative around her, which they stop doing around this episode. Season 6 really hammers it home.

right... anybody who can be involved in that life even if it's a wife is automatically a shitty person. IRL people who use people sometimes actually believe they aren't a user or a bad person, they're acting on their subconscious which is their true self, the surface level they present to the world is fake and only intended to help achieve what they want.

She is horrible, but in her defense she’s in a lot of pain - she doesn’t have great relationships with her kids, Meadow periodically lashes out at her and AJ straight up hates her, and the relationship she has with Tony is just a plane crash. She’s desperate for love and doesn’t get any. Believe me, i won’t make any excuses for her, she’s an AWFUL mother and person. But I’ve come to see her as just another tragic figure.

When Tony starts 'leaning' on the inspector again at the end of Season 6, Part I, there is this tiny little scene where she is in her bedroom going through cards. She takes the card from the person she was going to get to look into Adrianna's 'disappearance,' but simply smiles and throws it into the never gonna use it pile. She instinctively knows they killed Adrianna, but as long as she gets the luxuries she wants, she is okay with going back to suppressing what she already knows...and now they killed one of the actual family members and not someone directly in the business. She is good with that. That solidified Carmela Soprano for me. She is pure garbage. and the writers putting that brief little scene in is their way of telling the audience, you sympathized with her all these years... it is actually a brilliant scene and one of many things that makes this the greatest show ever.
@candice44
2 ай бұрын
@@charlesswitzer8378 One of Carmela’s greatest flaws is that she deludes herself, she allows herself to be bribed and delusional about the nature of her life… so when you say “she instinctively knew they killed Adrianna”, I don’t know if that’s true - her intuition is definitely telling her something, but it’s something she has never allowed herself to believe. Same with Pussy/Sal. So it’s not so much that she is a stone-hearted sugar mamma, she’s more pitiable than that - like, just imagine how she’d react if she knew the realities of Tony’s life and job, like if she watched this TV show. She’d be mortified and wouldn’t go on, right? She’d be horrified and would never forgive Tony. So there is some kernel of goodness in her. Sadly it’s just inaccessible. But she’ll eventually get the tab when Tony is killed in the finale - that’s when the bill is gonna come and it’ll destroy her.

I guess the "moral of the story" is: you are who you are, and you can't escape your past. Tony tries to do things different and it doesn't matter, no one believes him. Carmela has been married to Tony for too long, she's a mobster too. Tony B tries go do the right thing, but being honest is not in his blood and he ends up working for Tony. Christophah' and Ade are in a toxic relationship, they are stuck in it no matter what.

I don’t think the Priest was ever trying to have sex with Carmela. I think he definitely wanted to, but was never going to go for it. Carmela and him talked about it a while after the night he slept over. She told him she thinks he tries to get a “whiff” of sexuality, without actually doing it. He seemed to take that to heart. So at this point I don’t think he’s motivated at all by having a crush on her. (I mean technically speaking sleeping with that other guy would be a sin, so no surprise as to why he objects)

The thing is that between Fr Intintola and Carmela is that she looks at him as a chaste man and her Fr confessor where as he looks at her as a one of his flock and a romantic interest. Which Carmela is oblivious too. That's why she goes to him. Daniel is being a little harsh, after all Fr Intintola's job is to judge. It's also Intintola's character arch and an age old cinematic theme the internal struggle of a Carholic priest. Subplot and subtext in many a movie like in the Godfather and many other films.
Shes in Dexter 👍

Don't know why the over abundance of hate towards father Phil, everything he said , his advice was correct in the Catholic faith despite his personal shortcomings which were never all that bad anyway, he admitted to having "carnal" thoughts/temptations for Carm but he never acted on these impulses. Seems kind of disrespectful to the Catholic faith to just dismiss his invoking of sin as if the very concept is just obvious superstition or nonsense. Don't know why so many people feel so free to shit on Christianity in it's various forms without hesitation but would never think of doing so for other faiths such as Buddhism or Islam etc...

Something to consider is that Olivia, Carmela, and Meadow(and in a small way Dr. Melphi are interchangeable. The female manipulator. Part of Tony's problem with women is bc several of the women in his life are the problem. Same with the Janice character another narcissistic manipulator. Very few of the female characters are innocents. Maybe Tracee, Adriana and Gloria were the only ones without an agenda. Another reason Tony was so in love with the ducks, they allowed him to be the patriarch. Another reason I'm taking Daniel to task on Fr Intintola is bc he is a proxy for Tony in several ways , and he tells so the same things to Carmella about her complicity in thier various conflicts.
