When you see him in other stuff, you really get an even deeper sense of the genius it took to bring Tony Soprano to life. What a talent. I can only imagine what it was like for the other actors.

Edie Falco is so raw and real in the hospital episode, even down to them not putting her in her gangster wife get-up, and dressing her in regular clothes, she is stripped of all the artifice we see her in for the rest of the series (even in the pool scene in Marco Polo from last season she's fully clothed). Her acting was never less then top notch but this (and maybe the argument scenes when she and Tony are separated) is her at her absolute best.

Note that Junior started to lose it after he fell down the courthouse stairs and hit his head - something that in his coma also happens to Tony. Don't know what the significance of it is but I doubt it's a coincidence.

47:08 Funny that Sam casually refers to Gene as "Florida kid". Gene is 47, the same age that Billy Leotardo was when that animal (I can't even say his name) whacked him, and as confirmed by Phil, he was also just a kid at 47. Sam superfan confirmed.

Of all the deaths in this show, Eugene’s is uniquely disturbing, unexpected and heartbreaking Edit: uncle junior said the name “malanga” when he shot Tony. He thought in his demented brain that Tony was his arch nemesis; pussy malanga. The guy he wanted to originally whack in Artie’s restaurant in the very first episode of the series

You may have realized this already, but each season is unique in that they all focus on how Tony fits into a certain role in his life. Season 1 is about Tony as a Son, his relationship with his mother and his father figure - Uncle June Season 2 is about Tony as a Brother, his relationship with Janice and two of his brother figures - Richie and Pussy Season 3 is about Tony as a Father, his relationship with Meadow, AJ and also Jackie Jr, who he tries to look after Season 4 is about Tony as a Husband, his relationship with Carmela and the breakdown of their marriage Season 5 is about Tony as a Boss, his relationship with his crime family and all the guys he has to try and be a leader for Season 6 is, finally, about Tony as an Individual, and his fundamental relationship with himself and his own, basic humanity The first couple episodes of the season very much deal with this.

You’re right. The first episode does feel like a season finale. Characters have new developments in their life (AJ in school, Janice with a baby). Eugene feels like one of those characters who comes in for a season and dies by then end (Richie, Jackie Jr, Tony B). But he’s introduced and dead by the end of the episode. Tony getting shot would also be in a finale (like when he *nearly* got shot at the end of season 1).

I remember reading an article about common occurrences in every season of Sopranos. Tony always has a car crash. Tony has a panic attack. A person vomits, and they're always in opposition to Tony. From the FBI guy to Adriana when she was an informant. There are always two scenes where two different characters are in a hospital bed. Always an unusual death. For example, dying on the toilet.

Yeah, this masterpiece of art gets darker and darker as it goes. Near the end, it gets almost unbearably depressing and dark. Having said that, it's the greatest piece of art ever made and it captures the complexities of life and the human condition better than anything I've ever seen, or probably ever will see. I'm jealous that you get to experience this for the first time.

A lot of people don’t like the dream sequences on the show but Tony’s coma dream is absolutely loaded with symbolism. Who IS Tony soprano? Why is his identity lost? Why doesn’t he have a New Jersey accent? What does the briefcase represent? Why are the monks, who typically represent wisdom peacefulness, so aggressive toward Tony? …it goes on and on -more than can really be picked up in one viewing.

  • @pollystye3270

Tony quotes Eastern philosophy without believing jn it. And if I remember correctly, the last time he was in a coma, someone left a Buddhist quote on his wall that he eventually threw away. The monks slapped him saying they've been trying to reach him could be a nod to that.

That song you mentioned at the end of the episode is called When It's Cold I'd Like To Die by Moby, in case you were interested.

For what it's worth, there's a pretty convincing social media post out there somewhere that states that the "Members Only" episode is very pivotal to the end of the series.

That Moby song at the end of episode 2 was also in the first season of Stranger Things. That might be where you're remembering it from.

There is also a prequel movie, made recently about Tony's dad, which you may find interesting but in itself it wasn't particularly memorable.

Eugene's (Florida guy) story in episode 1 is simply to demonstrate there's no leaving the family if they don't want you to. Think you'll win the lottery and give it up? Guess again.
