Funhouse. The final shot, tony smoking the cigar then cut to the ocean waves, gives me chills to this day. It’s the duality of man, illustrated perfectly in 2 images… we first see tony, smoking a cigar in his mansion, celebrating his daughters graduation, surrounded by family and friends, the picture of success- but underneath, suffering the betrayal and loss of his lifelong friend, and unable to express his pain. He pushes it down. Cut to the ocean waves, a scene of natural beauty and power, hiding Tony’s dark secret underneath…..

My favorite episode is Funhouse. Half of the episode is inside of Tony’s brain and it shows how paranoid he is, his secret love for Dr Melfi, Tony finally confronting Pussy by manipulating him to get on a boat while having food poisoning or if it was stressing on who was the real rat everything about that episode is gold.

Pour moi, the three best uses of music, amongst all the magic David Chase et al dredged up were- Bronze - this one. Silver - that sinister drumbeat which begun the start of the end for Tony, with the Bard of Salford - John Cooper-Clarke's - Evidently Chickentown. Solid list! I think mine would be pretty similar, except Funhouse would be my number 1. Starts of simple, then gets increasingly intense and eventually gets to my favorite scene. It has everything, Pussy admitting to being a rat, him having a last good moment with the gang (tequila), the crushing reality of the situation (did she even exist?), Sil leaving the room and then them finally doing the job. And then Tony gets back home and possibly the best season ends

I am a Ken Leung fan. His character Leon on POI is what Carter accepting his crazy and trying to enjoy it looks like. Edie Falco murdered Whitecaps. She made the anger, disappointment, and sadness of 20 years of self-deception seem so real. I think James did his usual Tony bullshit, but Edie was brand new in that episode. If anyone still idolized Tony after Cold Cuts they missed the point of the whole show. The number of times he tried to destroy people for no other reason than to try to fill the black hole inside of himself and passed it off as some kind of strategy are too many, but this episode should have left no misunderstanding of who he really was. Not a strategic badass, just a scared little man.

Amour Fou and Pine Barrens are episodes I see myself rewatching over and over and often back to back. They go so well together. Gloria’s first appearance is in the episode “He is Risen” and she looks beautiful and enticing but there is such a contrast on Amour Fou. Her transformation comes off like a horror movie and she gives me the creeps. Her character gets so dark.

Those would have still happened while the center plot line would have been Tony trying to make up with his mother to prevent her from testifying against him.

I'd devour a video by you about the representation of /attitudes towards Asians in the show. I have an outline in my brain for the companion video about black people. I think about it all the time. i think the usage of non-italian stereotypes & characters helps create the idea of italian American identity by process of elimination(which, as I'm sure the writers intended to not to, is how Italians became "white" in this country)
