    Bobby's position in the family was always kinda weird, though I'm assuming that has more to do with Tony and Junior's arrangement. Junior was still technically the boss, but couldn't directly oversee his operations, so they made Bobby a sorta Capo of his crew. However, since Tony was the real boss, and Junior's crew was only made up of a few old men, Bobby wasn't technically a captain of anything. There's also the fact that the writers very likely forgot, and they themselves didn't really keep track of the family politics.

    I think I said on another video, but the DiMeo crime family is probably about 50 made guys at any given time and about 100-200 associates. That's about ~5 crews of 10 made men, each who has a few associates under them. We see lots of these peripheral characters but never learn who or what their position is. In the first season, for example, there's that tall bodyguard with Junior when he's telling Tony "how many hours did I spend playing catch with you?!", and then the two younger guys standing guard for him at the diner when Tony comes to visit him, not to mention the 3-4 older guys around him he's talking to. That's about 5 made men and 3 associates right there. The series is replete with characters like this, so I think about 50 made men and 100-200 associates is relatively accurate, with us only getting to spend any real time with Tony and his inner circle.

    Yeah but Tony/Paulies crew consists of maybe 15+ soldiers but it was always said that Larrys was the biggest, so that would mean around 20 and maybe even more which would indicate that there maybe are more that 50 made guys. In the soprano wiki fandom it says that there are around 90 made guys which might be a strech but i would put it in the middle and say 60-70 made men.

    The show is really written like we're actually observing a very particular person (Tony) in certain situations during a certain period of their life with a few peeps in at a handful of the more important people that surround that person. We see and hear what we do and the left is left largely unknown as it would be if we were just hanging out with T or his friends and associates during these scenes. We don't have all the info. We don't even actually know for sure how many captains there were at the beginning of the show, the end, or any time in between. Characters appear to us outta the blue while clearly being known to the other characters and disappear all the same. We see next to nothing of any crew past some leadership and the ones Tony is social with or has direct business with. There's a lot unseen, we can only put together part of the picture. And it's better that way imo. We know the whole "glorified crew" bs was just talk cause NY was always careful not to come to blows with Jersey cause Jersey controlled a lotta cash flow and was capable of a lotta violence cause they had international connections and allies. It took Phil getting off the leash and becoming emotional and irrational to go past sanctions and it got him nothing positive at all. I think it's great that we only see the parts we actually need to and the rest is just whatever it is, it's not important to the story.

  • @oscarfabian8074

    @oscarfabian8074

    I couldn't agree more, if you look at the real life counterpart of the Italian New Jersey organize crime groups they're very much real gangs with similar structures and personnel as their more infamous cousins in New York. The reality is that there is a lot more associates than there are made members. So it wouldn't be surprising that the guys that we mostly see in the show are only the high ranking members that are around Tony and that all the peripheral people wouldn't get screen time as characters because the layers of insulation that the boss should have.

Two, a few more were going south of the border, more than occasionally. And three, it was well known that Tony Soprano was seeing a shrink, and tried to kill his own muddah. Ralph Cifaretto, whatever happened there, I don't know.

    You make such a great point about them introducing characters just out of the freaking blue. The episode where Hesh gets mad at the Cuban friend in the stables? Ralphie breaks it up saying you guys have been friends for ages! We're watching like yeah, really? Who is this guy??

    I think you're right that is pretty much impossible to chronicle every single character that's associated with them since they have so many if you include like the garbage guy and there are many doctors that they work with and also threaten. Do you want to count every single politician that they threaten are like the Russians that they work with or the hitmen they hire? It's hard just a stick to the made guys since there are so many background characters who could be or not

    You missed an associate of richie aprile's crew that went by "donnie" He is only in a few episodes because He got fired inmediately after he called the actor that plays joey peeps a f@g, because he awkwardly complimented him on his looks and compared him to a hollywood star. If you’re wondering who he is,he is in multiple scenes in the construction site during the "no-work" jobs. He is also in a scene where johnny sacks beats him up in a bar and pees on him. You find that scene by typing "jonnhy sack attacks"

    @@MySalsaSalsa on the "Talking Sopranos" Podcast , the actor that plays joey peeps told the story. He didnt mention any names but he gave enough clues 1) it was an actor that didnt have many episodes 2) they had a scene together 3) the actor was cut off shortly after their scene 4) it was close to joey peeps introduction as a character. 5) it was an actor in new jerseys family but one that no one remembers. Im sure you can find the episode of the podcast on KZread, i would only recommend listening to it to confirm the story, other than that, i dont recommend listening to it. The guy wasnt too good of a talker. Even whenhe told the story which should make for an interesting anecdote, the hosts werent too interested in it.

    I think there is a way to clear up some of the ambiguous standings of certain characters. There are two different types of associates: family, and business. Family associates are (typically) young guys being recruited into the actual mafia. Before they’re made guys, they’re the entry level men doing jobs for capos. Brandon, Sean/Matt, Benny/Little Paulie, etc. Their “career path” is strictly within the family, thus family associates. Georgie and Murmur are interesting cases. They probably don’t have career aspirations of being made men (if they even can be), but they’re low level criminal associates that work for the higher up guys, thus, family associates. Then, there are business associates. Those who deal with the crew/crews and are valuable allies/sources of income, but would never be “IN” the mafia themselves. Whether they’re politicians (Zellman), the ministers that help with the HUD scams, Masserone and Barone with construction and garbage respectively, and many more, these are the people who are not in the mafia, but otherwise work in conjunction to profit themselves along with the mob. Dick Barone or Reverend James Jr. would never be made men, and would absolutely never consider themselves mobsters, but simply that they have mutually beneficial business dealings with the Soprano family. Finally, there is a third category which I would consider “victim”. This is reserved for the people who are *kind of* family associates, but their dealings are that they’re being taken advantage of. Davey Scatino got himself in deep shit with gambling, so he’s a victim of the bust out. JT Dolan is a victim of Christopher’s. Beansie, while he was a former full blown associate in the past, went legit but was victimized by Richie. Even Old Man Satriale “lost” his business because of his gambling debts to Johnny Boy. These aren’t associates, because the money they’re “giving” to the mafia is being taken. They’re victims, plain and simple. Thus, you have a broad picture of how the mafia operates. You have the boss, and his consigliere and underboss. Under them, capos who manage made men, and all the low level associates. Most mafioso that are made and above will have dealings with the latter two types of people: business associates that they partner and ally with to generate revenue in a mutually beneficial manner, and victims. That’s where the money comes from. Shit rolls downhill, money flows up, since time immemorial.

    I agree. I just always thought early on when Tony told him your getting a bump and it’s Tony then Sil and Paulie in the pecking order that meant Paulie for that time was the underboss and Sil was consigliere. Obviously as the show progressed and Paulie and Tony’s relationship became turbulent he was demoted but it was never directly mentioned to my recollection.
