For season three, a storyline was planned where Livia would be called to testify against her son in court, giving evidence on stolen airline tickets she had received from him, but Nancy Marchand died on June 18, 2000, before it could be filmed. Existing footage and computer-generated imagery was used to create a final scene between Tony and Livia in the season 3 episode 2 "Proshai, Livushka" before the character, too, died.

Marchand was already undergoing cancer treatment when the show began and made the producers aware of it. She was such a great actress that they still cast her in the role. As noted before, all of her scenes in the previous season had her in bed or sitting down to limit the physical strain.

Another indication that certain production tricks were required in the final scene with Livia can be seen by the fact that the part in her hair changes while she's sitting in the chair. A few months after Marchand's death, James Gandolfini (Tony) won an Emmy award as Best Actor in a Drama and paid tribute to her during his acceptance speech.

The actress playing Carmella's mother played Karen Hill's mother (Henry Hill's mother-in-law) in "Goodfellas"

The movie Tony is watching at the end is 1931's "Public Enemy" starring Jimmy Cagney, the movie that popularized him in the many gangster roles that followed.

The character Patsy wasn't originally supposed to exist. But they liked the actor and wanted to bring him back. So Philly got a twin brother.

WHAT a character! In every possible meaning of the term. Incredible writing, and incredible acting too.

❤Tony was watching the old classic White Heat with James Carney from 1949. He was brilliant in the roll.

The "check back in" thing when the FBI were recording is bc they cant just listen for hours to private convos. They get to listen for a certain amount of minutes, and if no crime is being discussed, they have to stop listening, wait 2 minutes, then try again. The idea is to try to protect the suspects privacy even in the midst of surveilling them.

The shot of the funeral director through the elevator door was a nod to the scene in The Godfather, when Don Corleone makes arrangements for Sonny.

I worked at a cemetery for a while. I can't imagine ever asking people to leave before we lowered the casket. Seeing it lowered is important to some people. We even had a few occasions of them staying to watch the vault lid go on and the dirt go in the whole.

Tony talks to Gigi about killing Spoons down in his basement, but the blown water tank delays the bug, so the FBI isn't listening. Tony always complaining about his bad luck 😂

She wasn't saying, "You, go to the store.". His name is Hugh. 🤣

Before Livia's death, Janice was supposed to just be an incidental character. Nancy Marchand's death changed that idea.

“Wet work” can mean, eliminating someone, a hit.

Funnily enough, I never noticed the CGI back when it was first on tv but that was on a standard definition smaller screen. I don't think its actually too bad, some other reactors havent noticed it!

I think they are both very bad people, just in very different ways.

They did CGI because the actress that played Livia died a few months before the season started...

Nancy Marchand had lung cancer & emphysema. You can tell how sick she was at the start and end of the 2nd season.

You and Your Mom have to rewatch that scene with the Mirror at the house because You can see Big Pussy in the mirror. It was done intentionally.
