Livia was a horrendous, toxic person. She talked about killing her children throughout her life, she conspired to actually have Tony killed, she ground Tony's father into the dirt, she manipulated and lied. She was a black hole of a person. Tony is not feeling sad at the end because he feels sorry or guilty about Livia. He is feeling sad because he didn't have a loving mother.

Totally spot on. I’m glad you pointed this out. Otherwise, I would have done do. Like a lot of older kids/adults with narcissistic or psychopathic parents, once a parent is dead or once you get away from them completely, you have to grieve the loss of a parent you always wanted but never had…. and never will have.

Nancy Marshand the actress who portrayed Olivia passing allowed Janice to return to the show. Originally when she entered the charted bus after killing Richie, that was supposed to be her last appearance. The original script had Olivia testifying against Tony, because she really wanted to ruin him.

Nancy Marchand died during the production of season 3, so in true Sopranos tradition, they wrote her death into the script. Hers was an iconic character in this series, and the scenes involving Mrs. Soprano were pivotal plot points. And anyone who ever had relatives from North Jersey, as I did, can tell you Ms. Marchand nailed that accent.

The placement of the electronic bugs in the house happened in the real life mob too. I read the Boss of Bosses in the 80s and they did it much the same way it was done here in the show. Paul Castellano was the Boss they bugged (John Gotti and Sammy the Bull later gun him down). Paul Castellano also had a friendly FBi Agent (2) visiting him at his deli on friendly terms too just like in this series. The same guys friendly with him were in charge of putting the electronic bugs in his house. Though genuinely friendly to him too just like in the show.

The entire show's trajectory was shifted by Nancy Marchand's death between seasons, they brought back Janice and made her a core character who was probably like Ritchie gonna be a one season character given her exit in the season 2 finale and the whole stolen airline tickets debacle which seemed like it was heading towards Livia testifying against her own son got dropped when it may have well been the focal point of season 3. A lot of little things in the real-world like 9/11 and the war in the middle east also influenced the show's direction so it's interesting to think of what could have been the original vision although I think the show changed for the better in most cases.

The actress who played Tonys mother passed away. She looks weird in the scene because its bad CGI with a body double.

They took Olivia off the show because she passed in real life. If you noticed her last scenes, they were computer-generated because she already died before they filmed that part.

Nancy Marchand, the actress who played Tony Soprano's mother, passed away in 2000 between the filming of seasons 2 and 312. Rather than replace the actress, the show's creator, David Chase, opted to abandon his plans for the character and instead kill her off, using CGI to give her and Tony one final scene together.

The actress who played Tony's mom was very sick. They had to use CGI in the scene with Tony - "In The Sopranos season 3, Marchand only appeared onscreen once, in the aforementioned scene that used CGI. Tony confronts his mother to warn her not to incriminate him to the FBI. The conversation turns into an argument about Livia's refusal to fill out the books his wife Carmela Soprano (Edie Falco) had bought for her 20 years ago - journals designed for her to share her life experiences with her grandkids. The subtext of the scene is clear: Tony is furious with his mother for her refusal to act maternally. Ultimately, Tony Soprano's mother had to be rendered in CGI because their story wasn't over yet."

Cappacola is the proper spelling of “Gabagool” as the pronounce it in the show. AJ is listening to Slipknot while doing homework about death just after the passing of his grandparent. There’s a lot of us that did that. Also FTP 😂

I like to think that Noah punched Tony’s lights out in the end. The reason Livia looks weird in this episode is that the actress died before the season started so they shot some scenes using clips of her from previous episodes to wrap her storyline. The James Cagney movie that Tony watches is called Public Enemy. One of the greatest gangster films of all time and obviously inspired The Sopranos.

Little fact, the last scene she was in and tiny was shouting at her in her house, that was actually green screened…they had to take another scene from her and put it in that scene coz the actress actually died before it. If I look back at the scene she kinda looks funny and she dies T actuallyvtslk. She wasn’t actually there.

its crazy how the CGI they used for Tonys mother in this season is actually insanely high-tech for this time. she passed away before S3

Asia you’re sharp. You picked up on the door mirror reflecting Pushy’s image instead of Paulie’s. The Sopranos isn’t a supernatural show. Whenever they do something unnatural or odd like that it’s because the writers are foreshadowing events that will happen eventually (one way or another). You (and the viewers) have to figure why. Why was Pushy’s image in the mirror when Tony opened the door & Paulie’s image in the mirror when he closed the door??

The old movie Tony is watching is an old gangster movie. James Cagney role is a mirror of Tony’s role. I haven’t watched that old movie, but I think rival gangsters were the ones that said he’s coming home. I think they took care of him and dumped at the front door. That’s why Tony looks so emotional when he’s watching that scene. My story and I’m sticking to it! 😁

No, the brief scenes of Public Enemy at the end are all about Tony watching a loving and supportive mother and wishing he had had the same.
