The Social Media Stars Of South Korea Are North Korean Defectors (HBO)

There’s a new kind of social media star in South Korea: North Korean defectors, whose videos get tens of millions of views.
The South Korean capital city of Seoul lies only 30 miles from the North Korean border, but South Koreans, like everyone else, don’t know much about their neighbors to the north. Now, some defectors are becoming internet famous by shedding light on the most mysterious country in the world.
There is no internet in North Korea, but many young defectors learn to use social media within a few months.

Unfortunately in another video with NK defectors (Asian Boss, check it out) apparently there are a lot of South Koreans and Chinese-Koreans who pretend to be defectors and then take advantage of the SK government's aid and/or gain social media fame.

But they are getting famous for nothing, based on a single notion of them being from a particular geopolitical location. Besides, when you escape and make such flashy appearances, the NK's government seizes your relatives, puts them in concentration camps and works them to death. So yeah, these people so deserved to be famous (sarcasm)

I've met atleast 3 North Korean people here in NZ, it's hard trying to communicate with them as they're a bit older and still struggling with the English language but I will say they're very hard working and very humble from what I've seen, a couple even learning Maori and learning about the culture. Can't help but love it 💕

It never fails to amaze me that South Koreans (SoKos from ROK) can think/say negative things about North Koreans. It's the psychology of "otherness" that even people of same region/culture/heritage would focus on what's different though essentially the same people. I understand the evolutionary psychology behind it but damn, aren't we supposed to be capable of higher thinking? This type of mindset is also driving racial issues in US and this goes to show that even amongst those of same ethnicity, we choose to focus on "otherness".

  • @nopickle4469

    @nopickle4469

How easy for you to say. What do you know about the social issues that arises from people who come from a nation with no concept of capitalism? Nothing negative? Seriously? When they're granted automatic citizenship in a land they've never set foot in, given housing, monthly allowances and for young people, a choice of any university they wish, including the most prestigious ones? When korean males like me have to do military service to defend the country against north korea at the DMZ, where north korea 'constantly' provokes, bombing an island, sinking naval ships and recently planting mines right on the border fence maiming two soldiers? And do you know spies and assassins enter in guise as defectors? There are a thousand things to be negative about since the end of ww2 and Japan's surrender, and I don't pretend everything is fine and sing songs of peace. Watching a few sad videos and living right next to it is different things. Try some understanding before you criticize.

Of course I somewhat agree if you narrow down your definition like that. I took issue with you stating that there is nothing negative to think/say about north koreans. Humanitarian needs and ethno-nationalism aside, there are legitimate concerns that has to be addressed. If you were just ranting about prejudice and dumb people, then I have nothing to add to that.

  • @Inlieuofsue

Leo read my first message. I never stated that there were no negatives about N. Korean dictators, N. Korean spies, or N. Korean threats. You went off on a rant, not me. Consider the video context (which focuses on N. Koreans trying to make a peaceful life in S. Korea) before going off on an overly emotional tangent.

"It never fails to amaze me that South Koreans can think/say negative things about North Koreans." Well, you've worded it horribly. You accused south koreans of tribalism, bringing up evolutionary psychology and comparing it to racial tension in the US. I say again that there are a variety of difficult reasons why there are still tensions among the two people, being a divided country on ceasefire being one of them. North korean defectors should be and is treated well in south korea. Seamless social integration is totally different matter. For a south korean, you sure have a black and white viewpoint.

Check out Kang Nara's youtibe channel she explains there her life in NK as an elite NK. It is a different story as to others who have defected because of poverty. She was relatively rich in South Korea and was educated. She was friends with a girl whose father was a head of the military that confiscates South Korean media that make it to the north. She said that friend would bring those confiscated stuff in school which they watch. She defected because she doesnt get along with her stepmom. She followed her mom to South Korea. Her friends thought she was studying college in PyongYang when she left.

I think VICE News translation omitted some important nuances of what a North Defector say about her experience in South Korea. @3:23 Students ask me if there are tall buildings in North Korea. They were thinking that there are no tall buildings in North Korea, and North Koreans are living in mud houses, wearing socks with holes. They had an image like that, like there were some people even saying "North Koreans are Kim Jung un's dogs". It shocked me. It changed a lot. North Korean economy, although it seems static, North Korean's cultural standards are getting higher. Thinking that North Korea is economically poor and South Korea shouldn't reunite with North Korea needs to change. Things like this should change and they should think that North Koreans can do well too. Like how it shocked the North Korean defectors that South Koreans just think North Korea is dirt poor with no tall buildings. And the fact that North Korea is changing and cultural standards are improving. Why did you omit this? I think these statements are really important and shows the "real" reality of North Korea.

I'm not entirely sure what the lady at 3:50 is talking about. Yeah they have high rises, but they often don't have electricity? They have huge starvation problems and huge parasite problems. I feel like she must have been pretty high up in North Korea for her to get offended by people thinking North Korea is struggling.

So what *IS* daily life in Korea like? How do people live their lives? *How* are people's conceptions about it wrong? There is zero information about this - the only thing searches turn up is articles by people visiting the country as tourists. Given so many defectors you would hope there would be more information about this but there is none. Wtf planet?

If you're talking about north Korea they live poor and worship kimmy jonga as a god because he's fat. War propaganda cartoony for the kids and posters depicting the fall of western culture by their hand. They're forcefed everything and western influence in the form of movies, books, or anything is a government punishable offense. South Koreans live freely.

Check out Simon and Martina and watch their old videos, not the new ones. Those are pretty accurate. They lived in South Korea like 7 year-ish, and I think those are pretty objective as they are coming from Non-South Koreans.

I am a south korean and i have to say this video is misleading about many south koreans today. The older generations and the koreans on the eastern peninsula are anti north korea. But the younger generations and the koreans on the western peninsula are pro-north koreans. The korean democrats are hard core pro north, they refuse to accuse north of aggression and heaps the blame on the south instead. What is more worrying is the most koreans today reject capitalism: they consider huge capitalists like samsung and LG as greedy oppressors and demands their death. Instead they demand socialism mixed with ethnic and racial nationalism. During my middleschool years in Seoul the teachers and students bullied a north korean defector student for being a 'traitor' and taght us that the real enemy is not north korea but america. Speaking of america, the anti american sentiment in korea is immense: the song called "F@cking USA" is very popular among young koreans, even PSY sang that song.Seriously, if the american troops pull out of korea, south korea will crumble from inside in a flash. I hope Trump is not stupid enough to do that...
