Honestly I don't have a problem with these self-aware brand Twitter accounts for the most part. I fully understand their motive, and I just find it amusing that an actual team/employee was commissioned to do exactly that. It's just marketing

Thing is, If I somehow saw this tweet before the drama started, I probably would have taken part in the competition because at first glance it seems like fun. I would have recognized that it was just a marketing thing, but what do you expect. Though the not paying artist for their work bit is bad.

EDIT: From that angle, it makes even less sense, because the settlement for that suit could be like 100X the price of a comission from that artist, if they're the type to stand up for themself.

@@26th_Primarch I think anyone who runs an official brand twitter knows they can easily make a burner account in 2 minutes and ask that way instead of using the *official brand twitter*. They're completely aware of what they're doing.

The trouble with big brands commissioning, is that, people wont jump on board, because they wont want to draw more art of the skittles character unless they can get paid for it too. which just locks up the whole outlet they were inteniding to open up. With a contest, just a simple contest for "hey if you wanna doodle, heres a ref sheet" then youre gonna get more interaction with people just having a fun time. maybe doing a "best piece wins X money" would help incite it a bit. and honestly would have been the best option, is someone would get some money, but its not a comission, so you'd have more art from it.

Familar with this in a way, in the US there was feline furry named Skittles as they wanted to honor there departed cat of the same name. Based on the date of this and the posts this was about 5 or 6 years before all that regarding the company. The person retired from the fandom a couple of years afterwards after being confused with being a spokes person for the brand of candies. This video basically rather justifies the mentality that lead to that person leaving the fandom due to a horrible experince. Mind you this is not the first furry that left the fandom over crap happening to them from others in the fandom. Usually for some stupid misunderstanding or reason.

I think the art contest with the horse railing a skittles mascot was a way of saying F**k you to skittles for even thinking of doing this without going through the proper channels.

Maybe a mrbeast kind of way. Have participants sign up, winner gets the highest amount of money, second place a little less but still high and the rest less but fair compensation for participation and their time. Mrbeast squidgames had: 1,000,000 for winner 100,000 for 2nd place 10,000 3rd 1,000 winners who lost early in the games 500-400 for those who lost first round. Thus everyone gets paid for spending their time.

Porn companies are the only corporations that can get past that protection.

I thought for several years that theses big corporations are trying to pander to our niche communities. It really popped off for me seeing how everyone was dipping their toes into animal crossing back in 2020. When you talked about it as the social media marketer. Their whole goal is be relatable but they end up like Steve Buscemi with his skateboard like hey kids

I think the the problem with the whole paying an artist (which they should at least pay for the winner) but this what is most likely an intern has to prove to a marketing team why they should throw money at this which would take a pretty decent amount of time which knowing Twitter would mean skittles would lose the chance to follow the clout.

I doubt the guy that runs the skittles twitter has access to their budget.

I'm not even a furry but the title was so grabbing I just had to watch this.

Eh tbh many major corporations think this way. This is one of the things that I brought up in multiple conversations that I have had online about people who are influencers. Not specifically you but yes involving you as well. A lot of the time when you have a large following of people all you have to do is go to another app that pays you for subs or pays you for likes or pays you for content and tell your subscribers to go subscribe to you or go follow you or go like your content and you will immediately start getting paid by that corporation as well since u already would have a large following chance are many would listen to what u request. In this case follows. Which means people who are already famous just end up becoming even more famous because they happen to be spread across more platforms and all of the giant corporations in large companies won't turn down having those people get promoted because they make more money by famous users appearing in creating content on their platforms. So why would they complain about it if they're making money and if the person that they are paying is still making money well that's the issue. Instead of promoting smaller people they choose to allow people who already have a following to use their platform. But that's kind of part of the issue. In my personal opinion it could be promoting the fandom even though it would be just because of money but if you don't hop on the train somewhere then you're never going to be" noticed" if that makes sense. Furry fandom chooses to turn down many things which is both good and harmful. Don't let people use u, but eventually someone will cave. Basically my point is is that it's literally everywhere and you can't stop it as an individual person or even as the singular group of furries. It happens in literally every corporation, it happens with presidency, it happens with TV shows, that happens with games. All of this stuff is connected deeply within other corporations. I know that we know a whole bunch of different vehicle brands like gmc, in chevy, and such but most of these corporations are owned by other corporations so what you have to look for is the one who's on the top. Like there's a couple of companies that own 90% of the sites that we use everyday so you have to think about who is in charge of what and who can silence what and who is paying them to say (what). In the end this just starts opening eyes to people who didn't before.

I’m not sure if I’ve missed something, but what the issue with the furry fandom being marketised? All it would do would make the fandom more mainstream. But driving them away purposefully will mean that furries could continue to be disrespected by general populace (mostly kids). If they’re doing it for financial reasons or for clout, as long as they aren’t defaming the fandom in the process, it’s nothing but a net positive for the fandom. Might even alleviate stigma to help young furs struggling with their peers mocking them for being in the fandom. I know that’s getting rarer but it might still be happening, so having companies supporting the fandom seems to me like a good thing. If I’ve missed a point in the video or anyone has anything to add to this, please feel free to tell me I’d like to know. Thx!

I think one of the fears is that the marketization of the fandom will lead to people trying to erase the parts of the fandom that aren’t friendly towards marketing campaigns (fetish stuff, LGBT+ friendly community, etc) The fandom doesn’t need to be mainstream. What makes the fandom special is how it differentiates itself from the mainstream and creates a home for folks who aren’t accepted within that mainstream. Also, I don’t think people appreciate feeling like a corporation that uses child exploitation is trying to trick artists into giving them free advertising.
