Love this! I have ADHD and executive dysfunction. I can create an amazingly detailed, 10 step plan for getting something done, but when it comes to simply executing it, I cannot get the first foot on the ground. Today I saw my dining, kitchen and living room were messy from the kids morning routines. I felt overwhelmed (and honestly paralyzed) and didn’t know where to even start. I told myself I’d clean for 15 minutes only the area immediately In front of me. I put the timer on and the kitchen and dining rooms were clean in 15 minutes and the living room took another 10. Something about assigning myself a limit suddenly made the task feel smaller, more achievable, and took away the pressure of having to clean until “everything looks perfect”. I am implementing this regularly from now on. I have been more productive today than most days over the last two years. Feeling like a rockstar I tell you😎

Glad to see I'm not the only one commenting here who has motivation deficit disorder (a more accurate name for ADHD according to (I believe) Russell Barkley) - it can make it really hard sometimes, but I've come up with basically the same strategy that you said, just focus on what's in front of you and do that first. It's shedding season right now where I live, and even though I try to wear clothes that hair doesn't really stick to, I still always come back from the barn with horse hair all over me and my stuff, which is a pain to get off and takes a long time, even with a good lint roller, but I don't want it getting on the rest of my clothes, so I leave those things out until I can get the hair off them, making the living room be kind of a mess for the last couple weeks (thankfully my sofa is leather, so zero hair sticks to it, so that's where I put those things when I'm getting ready to de-hair them, which at least gets them off the floor).

I’ve heard the 15 minute rule, it even that can sound overwhelming at times. I think 2 minutes is manageable for anyone. Thank you for this tip. I really feel like you’ve changed my life in so many positive ways since I found your channel. I’ve recommended you to some friends as well. The one tip that really helped me the last few months was to clean/tidy/declutter the rooms you use the most. Not the hardest ones first. That was a game changer for me. Thank you Joshua!!

Yes, I've used the 15 minute rule, and I've even shortened it to 5. Doing this I've found that motivation comes from what you accomplish, encouraging you to do more. All these time limits just get you started and over the procrastination hump. I've also noticed in doing this that the task you've been avoiding, the important one that you've been dreading, takes much less time than you imagined it would. Another realization that gets you going.

My issue is that I look at something I have to do and it just looks so overwhelming I give up before I start. I have read in a book about actually setting a timer for what you think you can handle. Go do that task until the timer goes off, then go sit down. Do that a few times and then increase the time and so on. I tried it and started on an "overwhelming" task. I timed how long it actually took me to accomplish the task and discovered "Twenty minutes? That's it? That was no big deal at all." It has helped me to grasp some reality about the size of the task. This was a great video to get started on a task, that in looking back, really wasn't a big deal. I also step back and look at what I've accomplished. Yay me!!

Just getting started is always the hardest part. I use this idea to trick myself into thinking that I don't actually have to finish the job, even though sometimes I actually do. But even if it's not finished, it makes it easier to face it the next time, since part of it is already done.

I started on Monday with the plan to use 2 ‘stiffer type' dusters daily. It’s Saturday and my entire first floor is dusted and the floors are clear. I even washed the 5 scatter rugs that we still have, and the area rugs are vac'd. Just knowing I could stop at 2 items gave me that extra little umph to do 'something' and most often I did even more. To think I’d been trying to decide which maid service to hire just to get the dust off the shelves and mop boards!!! I was definitely making a mountain out of a mole hill… Thanks for keeping your messages short and to the point, you are very appreciated at my house.

Great idea!I love this, 2 minutes! Ha! If I had JUST put this idea into place yesterday it would have saved me $25!!( I litterarly procrastinated paying a bill, not bc I didn't have the $ in the bank to pay it, & NOT bc I didn't set a reminder on my phone AND written in my calendar to do so, but simply bc I didn't feel like looking up my password to login to pay that bill! All it would have taken is 1 minute to locate the password & hit a few clicks saved to phone & it would have been paid. On time. The harsh $25.00 "late fee" is my consequence for my deliberate procrastination, & I can promise u, I will be using this "2 minute " rule from here on out!! Thank u again for ur excellent advice!

I have a simple WHY I PROCRASTINATE. I don't want to do many of these grueling, repetitive, dirty tasks that duty and responsibility require me to do. I have always been the one being responsible and now I'm retired and my inner bratty child whispers in my ear. "Let it go! Let somebody else pick up the slack! You deserve a rest!" But, alas, I now live alone and there is nobody else to do it. So I give myself a good talking to and eventually I do complete onerous tasks like cleaning out the litter box, taking out the garbage, mowing the lawn etc. And usually it takes less time and effort than I'd imagined. I realize that the other side of the coin of my super independent older lady is a needy, little child who never got the help and support she'd wanted so badly. She knows nobody is coming to rescue her but, aw gee, let's just have another cup of coffee and watch this KZread blog awhile longer!

I have a very simple way of looking at procrastination - you are putting off doing something you don't want to do because you don't like it. So you are postponing the misery of doing something you hate to do. You stall, do something else, put off that miserable task until you just have to get it done. Perfectly sensible, really. No reason to psychoanalyze it. Every sane person avoids unpleasant things. I've done it all my life and don't feel the least bit of guilt over it because shoving a nasty job off to one side so I can do something I'd rather do makes perfect sense to me.

Sounds like a great tool, not only for breaking the inertia, but for redirecting my easily distracted brain back onto the task at hand… SQUIRREL!!! 🐿

Studies report that 90 to 95% of us struggle with procrastination at some point in our lives ... and apparently 5 to 10% of people lie about whether they procrastinate.

Tip is useless. Either one stops after 2 minutes or some tasks need at least 10 minute preparation time BEFORE one can even start working on it.

Great tip, but not always applicable - for instance, errands. You can't walk, say, towards your local tax dept for 2 mins and then turn back. Like, it's ok for starters, tomorrow I'll walk 5.
