    Watching the Ukrainian people flee their country this week - what do they have? Their children in their warm coats and hats, a most favorite stuffed animal clutched in their arms, some with their dogs or cats. ALL that is precious and able to be carried. That's all. What else is important in life? The most important things cannot be bought. What a lesson for all of us.

    This is well said and so true. In a moment's rush we will only be able to grab what's most important and valuable at the same time, which is usually life and if we are lucky and well organized maybe documents, that's it.

    Yes I agree. I think when facing a horrific situation like the Ukrainians are you really are seeing the truth of what really is important. I saw on TV one lady get rid of most of her luggage simply so she could take her dog on the train as there wasn't room for both. She chose a life over her things. We consume based on what society wants us to do but in being afraid of what people think I just don't see how it can make them truly happy. I have hobbies that I do need to buy for but helping people and animals makes me genuinely happy.

    Yes..funny that!..the marketing.. and, "they" are really "ramping it up" now as we come out of loooong tough lockdowns. However, it is understandable as retail/businesses have suffered greatly the last 2 years. However, a lot of people are not going to rush out to shop... they have benefited from the savings made during lockdown.. and many have also realised the benefits of this. In fact, many are reluctant to "go back to the office" after working from home for more than 2 years. Why waste money and time on public transport to go to an office to do what you have done well from home? Of course, not all work in an office but I think a lot of priorities and habits have changed. But part-time home/office will become the new norm. And, many have also realised we do not need all that "stuff". I have been madly decluttering..actually started before pandemic, but ramped it up 12 months ago. Just being retired made me more conscious of what "not to leave behind" for others to "deal with"...as, a lot of "stuff" I have is what was left in boxes by a few previous generations. It is really hard, emotionally,sometimes, but even doing one drawer or cupboard a day you will "get there". Photos are hardest. I have many going back 150+ years that need organising/sorting. But, my own, from 70s to 90s will be heavily culled also🤗 Cheers from the world's "most locked down city"... Melbourne, Australia.😁👍🇦🇺

    Hey Joshua, I've been on this hedonic treadmill of sorts with minimalism, finances, and self-wellness for the last 10 years or so.. I am stepping off to analyze and take a different path. I get to a point of contentment with things in particular then gradually my items increase then im decluttering again. It feels so satisfying but upsetting as I increase. I have a channel that I haven't maintained that's to help keep me accountable to myself, how do you truly ascertain for yourself what is enough. people are so avoidant of making a definitive amount it makes it difficult for me a really materialistic person to grasp. But in the true sense of materialism in caring about the material and what pours into creation, I'd like to understand "enough" better. That's probably going to be my next video topic and I'd appreciate your insight.

    It's an ongoing process. Lather, rinse, repeat. Don't beat yourself up. I find that every 6 months minimum I can go through and get rid of quite a few things. Every time I purchase something I'm very much aware of how much space and time it will require - because everything I purchase requires either space or time.

    I once read something that says "the amount of money spent is the amount of your life wasted" merely because you work to earn the money and the time spent earning the money account for your life. We all know that we can't avoid spending money. We need food, shelter, clothes etc but, I believe the time we take to spend money unnecessarily is the time we should be spending finding more meaningful things in life, like a good clean laugh or just a stroll through nature or better yet donating that time and resources to someone indeed, will bring grater satisfaction.

    Good Morning, long-time viewer here. I agree with Puff Piece in that it is important to be able to “just be” and find contentment in caring for one’s own soul. Sometimes THAT is how we contribute to the world. It does not necessarily mean we are not doing some element of good works in our lives. Also agree with Puff Piece that the pressure to ‘contribute,’ ie to volunteer, to do this, to do that, to take up our precious time can cause unhappiness. Finding it interesting Joshua that you jumped right to that question/response versus a more supportive response for what other great minds (read for example, mindfulness) have spent their lives’ work teaching others: just be. Is that not considered ‘enough’ in your version/view of minimalism? Again, just find interesting, appreciate opportunity for discussion. 🤔

  • @JoshuaBecker

    @JoshuaBecker

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment Kathleen. You'll have to correct me if I am misunderstanding your response/questions. Are you asking, "Won't I be just as satisfied with my life by focusing only on my own needs (just being) like some people say?" Then I would say No. You won't find more happiness focusing only on your self ("just being") than you would find in living a life that helps others. That is not my version/view of minimalism. I argue for owning fewer possessions so you can live a focused and passionate life that brings the most good into the world. This is where we find happiness, meaning, and fulfillment-living a selfless life, not a selfish one. But again, if I misunderstood your question, sorry for misinterpretation your question.

    @@JoshuaBecker You’ve made my response out to be selfish and only focussed on self interest. You have missed my point and tried to shame me in the process. My point had nothing to do with helping others. You can just be and help others too like any normal human would, In any case helping others is often about self glory and seeking recognition/ affirmation. That’s ego and ego is the root of unhappiness.

    @Jennifer K People are always trying to ‘live their best life’ and ‘make every minute count’ and seek meaning and significance in everything they do. Essentially this about ego. Let go your ego and the need to be significant and recognised and just be. You will find your way.

    I know these words are 100% correct. But for example I am waiting for a new mobile phone for a couple of months for my birthday. But I got a promotion and want to buy it with it now. I do not need a new mobile now, my old one is fine and is still working ... I just want the new one so badly! :( so its a struggle between the devil and the angel on each of my shoulders ...

    Very true. Today, my husband is visiting his Aunt possibly for the last time because she doesn't have much time left on the earth. More importantly than things, he wanted to make sure she is 100% sure she is going to Heaven. Nothing more important than that. So, make sure you believe that it is only by God dying on the cross for your sins that can save you & ask Him to forgive your sins & take you to Heaven when it's your time to die. He will save you.

    I just bought a new 1950's Gibson Les Paul and I'm overjoyed. Nope, money doesn't buy happiness, it does however buy the yacht that takes you to the island where you find it. (J Depp)
