The Side of Tokyo They Did not Show You!
Book a wasabi-farming experience in Okutama on byFood.com: bit.ly/43z7rDM
Just west of Tokyo lies an oasis ripe with greenery, delicious food, and unique experiences. Okutama is a popular destination for Tokyoites (and beyond) seeking a peaceful escape from city life.
Today’s journey sees Shizuka exploring the best of Okutama, first stop: a wasabi farm by a pristine river! Shizuka meets the owner of the qasabi farm, David Hulme, a former journalist from Australia who moved to Okutama in 2014 after chasing a story about a wasabi patch he stumbled upon deep in the woods. Okutama was appointed a wasabi-producing region by the shogun, with wasabi grown in the area referred to as ‘Shogun wasabi’ or ‘Okutama wasabi’.
David reveals some interesting information about the farming process then proceeds to grate some fresh wasabi for our host to try! Shizuka tries the fresh wasabi on its own and with some roast beef before moving onto the next stop of this Okutama adventure…
Dorapo Blue is a quaint cafe owned and run by Hashizume Sadayasu. This beloved local business offers a cafe-style menu including items like coffee, homemade cakes, and desserts, along with hearty Japanese meals-all of which are made by Hashizume-san himself. Shizuka takes a seat at the counter and orders some Dorapo Blue specialties: coffee with freshly whipped cream, a keema curry set, and homemade pumpkin cheesecake. With one more stop to go, our host finishes her meal as the journey continues.
Located right by Okutama Station is Tamado, a restaurant serving tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet). She receives a warm welcome from Kawamura Shuhei, the owner, before moving into a tatami dining room to choose her final meal for the day. After perusing the menu, Shizuka settles on a supersized rolled omelet set, fine sake, and rice topped with bonito flakes and pickled plum.

Can't mistake that Aussie accent. What a wonderful insight into the work of Australian wasabi farmer on the outskirts of Tokyo.

I think what I love most about this video is that it challenges our notion of what Tokyo is - a mix of rural and urban spaces.

Yes! There is more to Tokyo than just the streets of Shibuya and Shinjuku!
I love how you not only show all the amazing food but also the area as well. I love your outfit too!
Okutama appears to be a treasure trove of hidden gems! Doing a nature hike and having some of that roast beef and fresh wasabi sounds like a perfect day ☺️

I really love to see the passion all these people have for the area and the food they provide. 💖
That last shop's food plate was so aesthetically pleasing to look at.
Heavenly country , you never bored with japan always something new and surprises , I found serenity calm and peaceful in the country side . I first visit japan in 2017 when I retired and then every year since .
I loved the wasabi farm, and that pumpkin cheesecake looked magnificent.
This was a beautiful location Shizuka. My favorite place was where the older gentleman made everything from scratch. I wish these videos were a lot longer I enjoy them so much. Shizuka you are wonderful.

All very cool, but I really liked the curry/coffee/cheesecake guy who moved from the hustle and bustle of the city. He seems like a calming and kind man and his place had a calm presence. We need more people in the world like him.

Wasabi goes really well with fatty tuna and marbled wagyu beef. A bowl of rice with shaved bonito flakes and wasabi topped with a light drizzle of soy sauce is also great.
Can't wait to hopefully visit some of these places
Don't forget the Pacific Tokyo islands including World Heritage Ogasawara Islands that are as far away as Okinawa as well as quirky islands like Aogashima.
A fellow Aussie living close to (beautiful) nature in Japan and yet less than one hour (by personal drone or maybe fast bike...) from Shinjuku, awesome (lucky %$#^...) Those views from Dorapo Blue are just bonkers. And it's all still Tokyo! 😶 Thanks team, refreshing vlog

Quite the surprise to see that kind of natural beauty in Tokyo! The last stop on your journey seemed to be the most intriguing. Wow! Egg omelet served with sake, and don’t think anyone could beat that pumpkin cheesecake and coffee.😋

Love places like this when I visit Japan but most don't have an English menu which makes it hard to enjoy their food. If the places you visit have English menus, it would be nice to see them in the video.
