The SHOCKING Thing Scientology Did To Me
Ойын-сауық
Alex Barnes-Ross worked with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's daughter Isabella Cruise in London, and gives us a pretty unique insight into Scientology's operations in the UK. After being expelled from the Church of Scientology, he tells his insane story about being locked in a room. We also look at the differences between scientology in the US versus UK, its tax status and L. Ron Hubbard's bizarre British history.

I remember when I was in my early 20s I went with a friend up the road from where we worked, to pick up a friend of hers. I didnt know at the time, that he was a Scientologist and was working at the city offices(Auckland NZ) so we were in the vestibule of these offices for all of 10 minutes before we were being badgered to take a “personality test” I was just like “no thanks” and we collected the guy and left. HE then started to push going in for an “audit”. I was just like “dude, not interested” but I started talking to my friend after we dropped him off. She told me she’d taken a “personality test” and they’d told her that she was “unbalanced” and had the “potential to harm herself or others”. This girl was the kindest and gentlest person I’d ever met, and these people had made her worry about whether or not she really was unbalanced. I advised her to not listen to a word they said, and that she was as stable as anyone. It stuck with me tho cos it was just so very manipulative, telling people bad things just to scare them to come back for help…..assholes. I dislike Scientology intensely.

What I’ve never understood about Scientology is, if going clear means that you get control over your emotions and your “reactive mind,” why is Tom Cruise known for losing his cool at employees on his film sets? Sounds like he needs a refund on all of his auditing sessions!

Nicole doesn’t talk about her children with Cruise. I’m not sure if she talks to them. The kids are adopted. Kidman has never said anything bad about the church. Bella Cruise is the adopted daughter of Nicole and Tom. Tom has only one biological child - Suri w/Katy Holmes. It was a huge deal when she had her b/c rumors swirled that Tom couldn't have biological kids (Mimi Rogers had none and Nicole adopted). And, from what I understand, Tom wasn't much of a dad to Bella either - allowing Scientology to basically raise her. I don't think she had much parenting from anyone.

I'm Australian and I was curious why Scientology is legally treated as a religion. It all flowed from one legal case decided by three justices of the High Court, the highest court in the country. All three agreed it doesn't matter if the founder of the religion was a charlatan who considered it a mere money-making scam, they must decide the case on the basis of whether its adherents considered it their religion. Which they concluded was so. So it looks like we're stuck with them as a religion for a very long time because it's hard to imagine how their decision, for those reasons, ever gets overturned. 😞
@Justicia007
Жыл бұрын
Yes because by that legal decision, they just legitimized cults. By definition the adherents to a cult believes that it's a religion. So the only thing to do is to revisit the legal premise and change the legal definition, which they absolutely should do because it's nonsensical to determine the intent and nature of an organization through the beliefs of its members who are clearly brainwashed.
@rossmurray6849
Жыл бұрын
@@Justicia007 If only it were that simple. The prohibition against anything that restricts the free exercise of any religion is in the Constitution. That's not going to change. And yes, they did legitimize cults, and they did so deliberately. Their decision states, "Charlatanism is a necessary price of religious freedom."
@Justicia007
Жыл бұрын
@@rossmurray6849 I don't really know too much about the Australian legal system. Sounds like there's a similar constitution to ours here in the US? Because even though we have decisions here that may seem set in stone, The court is free to accept a case with a similar but slightly different issue and clarify or even change their position and therefore change law.
@masaokakihara9316

I stand behind that court decision, as it seems just. All religions are religions. Either consider all of them not eligible for tax deduction, or none. There are a few ground pillars and if a group meets those, we gotta accept.

Great discussion. 💜 Something I think that doesn’t get mentioned enough when discussing L Ron Hubbard is that he was a *pulp fiction* writer & wrote in all sorts of genres under various pseudonyms. Romance, western, sci fi, he did it all & was paid a penny a word. His books were the inexpensive sort sold in checkout lines at drug stores & the like. 📖 He still holds the Guinness world record for most prolific writer. He had a special affinity for sci fi, as did most of his friends who were writers, and they’d meet often & spin tales with each other. I’m sure by his very plagiaristic nature he “borrowed” plenty of ideas from those around him. Wouldn’t it be fun to be a fly on the wall in those days? I think it trained him so he could come up with pretty fantastical stuff on a moment’s notice when he eventually turned his attention to Scientology.

I read a lot of his SF as a child so when I eventually heard about Dianetics I simply couldn't take it seriously. In the early seventies I came across other SF writers exploring the theme of messiahs and prophets. I think Robert Silverberg was one. They depicted cynical salespeople putting on a messianic facade and also truthful dupes being manipulated by politicians. I think I've been innoculated against cults from a young age.

Also, there is a powerful lure to the idea of belonging to something secret. It makes you feel special. Anyhow, I have a really hard time reconciling the fact that Scientology exists in England. And that the St. Hill is a Manor House😐 I don't even want to look at what it looks like... I want a Manor House(and a castle wouldn't be so bad, either😏)for me! It's no fair Hubbard got to have one! I never understood the appeal Scientology has for some people on a personal level. I got hold on a copy of "Dianetics' in 1988 as an adolescent (in the GDR even) and saw through the bullshit right away. Took me just a couple of pages. I agree that they're praying on the vulnerable. However, though I would not fall for their BS, I would say I was still vulnerable as a young man. I guess, you've got to be vulnerable a CERTAIN WAY so that you might be in danger becoming a victim of them. 'Victim' I think is the key word here. People who fall for their lies are victims. I don't feel the need for looking down on them, because I was lucky to be vulnerable in a different (maybe just a little less than them) way. If you say that you under no circumstances couldn't have ended up being fooled by them - if you're not vulnerable at all; good for you! But it's the result of lucky circumstances that you happened to grew up in. Righteous anger against that evil cult is necessary to bring it down. Certainly! But equally necessary is empathy and compassion for the victims.
Congrats on over 100k subs! I was here early on and am so impressed with your subs growth!
