The abuse from her own father messed her up for life, as is usually the case with child SA. Couple that with how society was back then towards it (pretended that it didn't exist) and she never stood a chance.

And in White Mischief, the story of the Lord Errol murder. It was a very good movie but seems to be largely forgotten today. A pity as it’s well worth watching.

There's a thoroughly good film from 1987 called White Mischief. It's all about the Kenyan 'Happy Valley' set and a murder. Alize (portrayed by Sarah Miles) plays a considerable part in the story. I'd recommend it to anyone. It's strong, grown-up stuff - but it brings Alize to life for anyone whose interest has been piqued by *Forgotten Lives*' excellent biography here.

Alice de Janze was indeed a leading member of "The Happy Valley" set led by Joscelyn Hay, 22nd Earl of Errol and Hereditary High Sherriff of Scotland and his then wife, the equally colourful, Lady Idina(formerly "Gordon") who like Alice, had also abandoned her husband and children to run off to Kenya, with her Lover then husband. The entire set became known as "Remittance People" with independent incomes, whose wealthy and socially prominent, mostly British or American families fearing scandal, shipped their wayward progeny off to the relatively sophisticated, but isolated Kenya. Remember this was long before television or the Internet. Because they did not need to bother with the mundanities of having to work for a living, they built and settled in large homes on sizeable landholdings, living lives mostly devoted to decadent debauchery. It must be remembered, that the excesses of "The Happy Valley" were by No Means applicable to all "White settlers" who lived in the country at the time, most of whom were decent hard working folk. "Jos Hay" Lord Errol, handsome and devilishly charming, had probably the most noble lineage of any in "Thee Happy Valley", but he had no money. He was a also a serial adulterer, whose proud boast was that, he could bed any woman with a pulse, in the country. After he and Idina were divorced, Errol married the unfortunate "Molly Ramsay Hill", who's husband a wealthy English Colonel had built her a lavish and imposing, "Moorish" style mansion called "Oserian", on the shores of beautiful Lake Naivashsa. It is believed that Errol, introduced his new wife to the deadly "delights" of Heroin and just three years later, she was dead from a combination massive drug overdose and alcohol. Errol inherited the house and at last he had a home befitting one of his stature he felt. The only problem was that there was still no money. At this time enter the recently arrived, wealthy English Baronet Sir Jock Delves Broughton and his new, glamorous and much younger wife, Diana. It was a second marriage for both having each been divorced previously. Through out that whole period world wide, "Divorce" was considered the ultimate "Social Disgrace". Because Errol and "Sir \jock" knew each other socially amongst the upper class "White Settlers" of Kenya, it was natural that the latter should introduce his glamorous new bride to the errant "Earl". Within a couple of weeks Errol and Diana began a steamy, passionate and blatantly public affair, which would lead to Lord Errol's murder a few short months later. The ensuing trial which found Sir Jock Delve's Broughton innocent of Lord Errol's murder, outraged English society which at the time stood alone, against Hitler rampaging across Europe, with lurid details of profligate excesses and blew the lid off "The Happy Valley"!!

Through time immortal, it's been proven that money isn't everything. It can't buy happiness, health, kindness and all the other valuable traits humans have been known to have. How sad it all is, though I love all history, that people never learn, or they simply choose to ignore the past and live in the rich, vapid, lusty, power-driven moments of their lives. What's happening in the world right now is eve more bitter proof of that. Thank you so much for a story so true, yet no film could capture its vain characters, and their cruelty and self-indulgence.

The expats in Kenya of this particular period were, even in modern standards rather wild. There are several stories about this enclave.

What a sad story. I'm quite sure she did have a mental illness. I think the saddest part is her children. They probably didn't understand why mommy wasn't there for them 😢

It's amazing to me how many wealthy people are rather insane...There seems to be a common theme, of a lack of genuine intimacy in relationships and love. Especially for the children who undoubtedly suffer the most...Due to the parents own self-absorbed lifestyle and selfishness. Very sad...

@@graceyoakum8863 what about that Wallace Simpson equipment might not have been normal? And that she didn’t let men have vaginal sex with her? Did you hear those things? Even rich girls got to have something special to attract the eye of a rich guy that gets everything he wants. That’s why they are all so freaky with ever revolving partners that quit when it all becomes too much or not enough.

She may have been bipolar, but more likely what lay at the root of her problems was trauma. Years of child abuse will cause behavioural problems and attachment disorders. Her other problem was being an intelligent and free minded woman in the 20s. Her behaviour would have been seen as unbalanced because it was nonconformist.

The Kennedy's oldest daughter was independent 'different', a lobotomy she got, & that was in the sixties, a calmer era! Also the drug use is significant, those substances WILL CREATE for severe mood swings. The brain is so imbalanced, trying to equalize neuro firing, which becomes a challenge. Your analyzing skills are impressive! 🎆Have many blessings, those are always decent tidbits to add to the diet of Life. Ya brought me joy to witness another critical thinker! Thanks.

This is actually very sad to hear and I feel bad for her, it seems she was the victim of sexual abuse by her father, which that does have a massive impact on anyone who goes through it, the fact that addiction and mental health issues ran in the family only added to how things turned out. Even now people who suffer from mental health issues or any of the other things she went through, still don't get the help they desperately need. I have suffered from depression since childhood and have had my own attempts, so in my own way, I can to a point understand why she was such a mess.

Nice storytelling. But, obviously what drove her over the edge was not some personality disorder, or drugs, but rather , that her lover had been happy to let her leave her husband for him, and only AFTER THAT informed her that he couldn’t marry her because reasons.

It seem to me she had a very sad life, always looking for something and never finding it. Or when she did, she soon lost interest. The tragedy of the story is the children, she didnt knew them, and they her. People who have mental health issues, had/have a very lonley life, better understood now, but in her era, people were usually put in an institution and sometimes forgotten about. Wonder what became of her children, and how their lives turned out?

Can't help thinking about how Alice was one of those people who travelled frequently on ocean liners... Our generation, having watched Titanic, has a sort of dread regarding sea travel. But look, it was just like air travel. Alice didn't drown at sea, she travelled extensively and shot herself in the end.

Married a “just” the age of 21. That sounds old to marry in those days…1910’s.

I think she wasn’t mad. Neither really depressed. From her background and behaviour she would be diagnosed this days with borderline personality disorder, but my personal opinion she more likely had CPTSD. Maybe overlapped the two, there is still a debate about it in professional circles whether they should separate the two or use as synonyms. I believe it’s two entirely different things, despite the symptoms are very different.

What a life this lady has lived.

It sounds like Alize de Janze had a lot more going on in her functioning than only Depression and/or Bipolar Disorder. There is such thing as Bipolar PErsonality Disorder accompanied with high levels of malignant narcissistic traits during the practising of sociopathy too though. Medical researchers are starting to theorize that only Bipolar Disorder is caused by exposure to toxic substances over time. Bipolar Disorder only is characterized by dramatic ups and downs in physical and mental energy levels. People with that disorder report that it is hard for them to explain why their performance at work and while tasking has a less predictiable pattern of consistent results. That is all. That disorder only has nothing at all to do with character and personality.

Alice didn’t shoot Erroll, Delves Broughton did. He confessed the murder at the time to Juanita Carberry.

Sad on her part even she had everything, in the end she didn't have emotional balance, and that send her to all her troubles .
