I've heard that if you read the last line of the book, then the first line of the book it's pretty sad and it's a tragedy. The last line is, "I just have to keep walking until I get there." And the first line of the book is, "I forget everything between footsteps." Meaning he's still stuck in the loop.

Woah 🤯 I just finished the book. I wondered how they actually got out of the loop. The seemingly just walked off into the sunset for lack of better words.

Well, that’s dark and has flipped literally the entirety of the ending

I just finished the book today and that literally ties ALL of it together omggggggggg. Like I look at everything so differently now. This whole setting is purgatory and there is no heaven. 🤯🤯🤯🤯

I just finished this book about an hour ago and I loved it!! I relate with you on how we went into it, I also expected it to be very murder solving based, not so much on the WHY he’s there and HOW he’s there. Besides that though, the twists thoroughly surprised me and the ending left me with my mouth wide open. In the last few chapters I had to reread certain sentences/scenes over and over to get myself to register what I had just read in shock haha. I loved it overall, even though the beginning was fairly slow I feel as if the second half made up for it. After a certain point I just started flying through it! The amount of detail packed into this book and the perfectly woven timeline astounded me. I could never in a million years craft such an intricate plot and time line, and for that I applaud Stuart Turton. After a certain amount of time I gave up trying to guess who did what and just let the mystery carry me and I think that’s why I enjoyed it so much

I’m so glad you loved it! Totally agree about the second half of this book being much better than the first! It really did pick up at the end and you’re totally right, it’s super impressive what Stuart Turton pulled off!! 😄

I finished reading this book yesterday and I loved it. People have some valid reason as to why they find the climax disappointing but that didn't bother me because I came to this realisation that more than finding the murderer this story is about how we get there.

Hmm... I completely disagree. I think the mystery of why the protagonist is in this situation is MUCH more interesting than the whodunnit aspect of the book.

Thank you. Your review makes a lot of sense. On page 133 atm and contemplating on giving up reading it. I daydream whilst reading so no surprises why it didn't grab me yet.

We're the opposite! I enjoyed the Sci fi elements more than the actual mystery!

I did like this book. I will agree the ending was a bit rushed and thrown together but the mystery isn’t what kept me. It was the character growth. The physical or mental hinderances of some of his hosts. How he came to forgive the very thing he was even there to torment. Typically I don’t like mysteries that purposely leave out some huge details that make it so the reader cannot guess the mystery. Like with this. The fake Evelyn for example. But this quickly turned for a mystery into a character growth that I had to see where Mr. Bishop landed. The ending was the only thing that was iffy for me but the whole storyline was beautifully orchestrated. I will say some of the best descriptive writing I have seen in awhile. I forgot what page but he said something along the lines of “I curled up like a spider to a flame” that’s exactly perfect.

I had high expectations as well but the ending just fell so flat for me, he could have taken out 1/3 of the middle of the book and used that space to expand on all the reveals at the ending and it would have been so much better. I enjoyed the writing style but by the ending I had so many questions that will never be answered that I just thought "what a waste of potential, this could have really been something." I suppose what killed it for me was the very end when the main character did something that made no sense to me and his thought process just didn't track with what I've experienced in real life and of course they're just fictional characters but this one thing he did just seemed too silly even for a work of fiction.

Agree, was bored for first half, also a bit confused same as you. Second half made it worth the read but I think it might be a fun reread in a while

Great review. I just finished this book today and I really enjoyed it. But I agree, the first half of the book was pretty slow, and it did take awhile for me to really get into it. Overall I still enjoyed it, I liked the twists, those slight sci-fi moments were pretty cool, and yes when it picked up it REALLY picked up lol

Very useful review thank you. I won't be reading this because I have a hard time getting into books generally and I am a character reader.

I’d say it is quite a bit too graphically violent for a younger teen. With constant drinking of hard liquor all day long, smoking (set in a 1920s British country house), drug purveying, torture, and murder of both adults and children. Plus getting into the mind of a rapist, seeing women through his eyes - though this is portrayed as despicable, it’s still described, and the man does not face consequences due to his social status.
