That's what completely killed it for me too, in 2009 my stepsister was murdered at age 9 and it's been 13 years and I still don't hold an ounce of forgiveness for the monster that took her life, they did it to see what taking a human life felt like (their own words) and have shown no remorse to this day, I don't think that's something that just changes inside a person and granted Anna and Aiden were in the prison for 30 years but living the same day over and over again so it didn't feel like 30 years to them.

michael did know that 'evelyn' is not evelyn, the real evelyn revealed to anna and aiden that felicity went to michael for more money to keep quiet. what bother me about the ending was the fact that aiden easily forgive anna, the woman who killed her owned sister and causing death and destruction accros half the nations of the world. surely 30 years in blackheath are not enough punishment for her. the reason they put her there in the first place was so that she couldn't escape it.

i found the main character to be SO infuriating. he barely spent any time with anna but it was enough for him to forgive her for torturing and murdering his sister on live tv??? also i feel like evelyn hardcastle only ACTUALLY dies in this timeline so how was that an answer? and how did the plague doctor not know who actually killed evelyn if he was there (with all of his memories) for 30 years? he had so much time to figure it out. Another thing that i found confusing is that michael asked evelyn why she was at caves so she decided she had to murder him. it seems to me that the caves were common knowledge (because of how michael refers to them) so i don’t think that anyone would assume that evelyn just left the stable boy there instead of assuming that he just fell in and got trapped. (sorry i know i worded this really poorly but i just found this book to be so confusing for no reason)

I thought her not being the real Evelyn was one of the more obvious twists. When Millicent mentioned she was an ugly child and was surprised by her being called pretty, I could tell that was important. And then connecting it to all the pictures being redone. I thought it was a very complicated story told it the most comprehensive way possible. Especially since I was listening in audio form and didn’t have the benefit of seeing names. I got confused here and there but the author brought me back to the core. But I agree, I really wanted to understand the purpose, the outer world, and the jail so much more. That kinda all seemed like he’s used all his creativity in the inner story and threw something together for the surface of the outer story. Over all I personally loved the book. Hope it gets made into a series. I saw Netflix scraped one.

I think if Aiden would have gotten out and gone home to his other life and left Anna in there it would have been a better ending, him forgiving Anna so easily is what completely killed it for me, in 2009 my stepsister was murdered at age 9 and it's been 13 years and I still don't hold an ounce of forgiveness for the monster that took her life, they did it to see what taking a human life felt like (their own words) and have shown no remorse to this day, I don't think that's something that just changes inside a person and granted Anna and Aiden were in the prison for 30 years but living the same day over and over again so it didn't feel like 30 years to them. I think the murder wasn't the main focus, the main focus was actions of Aiden and thats what I believe the story wanted to ask us what would you do if you find yourself in such a situation, would you crumble to your habits and convenience or would you fight them. Aiden wanted to redeem himself by setting Anna free and that thing just made me love this book even more. The way it talked about identity, accountability and morality is amazing

I agree with many of your points. It did land in my favorites of the year because I enjoyed the journey of the book, tho it did take some time for me to get into it. I did call it being Evelyn’s double and her brother being the killer, I don’t remember how I called it, it has been a year, but I liked those twists. Where the book lost me a bit was the sci-fi part of this being a prison. The whole “his sister’s killer” part and the other psycho guy in there with them... those bits were vague. And I too wanted to know more of the logistics of the whole thing. Like: How will they escape? How does one ‘live off the grid’ in this advanced society? Is she truly rehabilitated? Who exactly is the plague doctor in real life? Does he have any authority over this situation? What’s up with the other plague doctors interpreting with the situation? I also didn’t feel like this needed to based on an actual unsolved murder. A computer generated one should have been fine. I’m glad other people think about this weird stuff too with books and it’s not just me😉

The book was slow to start, and I enjoyed it from about 30-60%, but then it just kept cycling the same processes over and over. It could have been much more concise and probably would have been more enjoyable. The ending reminded me of the ending of "The Honey Farm" by Harriet Alida Lye. It just kind of ends, without giving you enough of the answers you crave.

I was terribly disappointed and frustrated by the ending, that Anna was allowed to leave. Imagine Hitler instead of Anna, could you let him go?! Forgiveness can only be considered after somebody feels remorse and asks to be forgiven, which was not true in Anna‘s case. The author has to reconsider his moral vectors.

Being a big Sci-fi fan, I actually really liked the time travel, body jumping aspects. The tension of running from the footman and the way Aiden’s bodies starting falling like dominoes made me feel like I was reading a really well-written thriller. The message and the ending were the disappointing parts for me. How can Anna be changed or repent if she is an amnesiac who was no idea what she’s actually done? How can Aiden forgive her if he doesn’t even remember what his sister looks like? There can be no true forgiveness when there are no feelings of resentment or vengeance in the first place. Forgiveness does NOT equal forgetting because forgiveness is the process of letting go of negative feelings. Heck, even the reader barely knows what Anna’s done (we’ve only been told, we were never shown) so even the reader can’t truly forgive Anna because we didn’t hate her in the first place. Also, the whole Evelyn was not Evelyn thing just seemed…. contrived and unnatural. A true mystery gives the reader all the clues so that when the solution finally appears, it is obvious when looking back on it. Even when looking back on this solution, it was not the most obvious or believable answer.

Okay, I love this book review, and everyone I entitled to their own opinion which is why I feel okay with sharing mine. I was actually able to draw up the conclusion that Maladine was somehow involved when Evelyn said Millicent was murdered and then Aiden had to think of why and just who was in the window with Evelyn on her walk with Johnathan (her son). I kind of knew from there, and its the strangest thing, I felt like I'd read or seen how everything else played out right before Evelyns big reveal when Aiden told Anna she was the one who needed to figure it out I just felt like I'd heard this story before. I'm rambling now, but I just find it so weird. Anyway, great review! I do agree that it was kinda all over the place, but still a good read!

I didn’t know that the killer was Madeline, but I did figure out that Evelyn wasn’t the real Evelyn. As soon as Cunningham brought Aiden the message Evelyn read at the well with a “drawing of a castle”, I knew. Millicent Darby also mentions how the party is a disaster because the parents are MIA and Evelyn is busy “playing dress up”, which is another clue.

I kept thinking “what’s the point” and never really found one. The ending was cool but didn’t work for me. Great murder mysteries need a SOLID ending and this book just didn’t. I totally agree with you about the world building! It's bugging me so much! Nothing about it makes sense! Or, maybe it has the potential to make sense but we're missing half of it. We don't even know if it's magic or technology doing this. And either way, if the people who built it are that powerful, how are we supposed to believe they can escape? Will Anna remain changed? Can you truly change that much if you were that terrible? We know next to nothing about who they were before or really who they are now, so it's impossible to tell. Aidan was in other people the whole time so we barely know him. Was Anna the same? Has she been in that maid's mind this whole time? Does that count as rehabilitated then? Where are their bodies? Have they aged? Has time passed? Did their bodies require upkeep? Because then they definitely won't escape. I'm not even mad about the Evelyn reveal. They had thrown so many twists at us by that point that I just figured "fine, what's one more." It was unnecessarily convoluted but it was a terrible place filled with terrible people. Fine, whatever. But the main theme of the book seemed to be redemption and forgiveness but we don't have a clear idea of who these people are or were, so we don't know how far they've come or if they deserve their second chance. And it may seem insignificant in the grand scheme to some people, but I feel like we need to know the logistics of this. How does it work? Why would anyone come up with this? What kind of society implements it? How are they supposed to live, if she's thst infamous. He wants to keep the truth from her, to keep her from backsliding but if she's that infamous there's no way to avoid it. The ending prompts nothing but more questions and it's do frustrating because there will never be answers.

And I wanted to know more about the prison and how it worked and the people running it. Is it just a physical place? Is everyone hooked up to some machine where it's all in their mind? Disappointing, because I loved Devil and the Dark Water. And I had seen a limited series on Netflix like last year called The Island, and while reading this book I kept thinking of that show asking, "Is this all going to end up being some sort of prison thing?" @@BedtimeBookworm Well, it was also hinted at many points that the people in Blackheath were ignorant and selfish. So it made sense no one cared if she looked like the real Evelyn Hardcastle or not. And even Aiden could not notice until he laid Gold's artistic eyes on her face up close to spot the similarities between her and Thomas Hardcastle.

I strongly agree with you, but I still did enjoy it (3 stars on GR). The book is way too long with way too many details, and I 100% agree with you that the book should have ended with Michael being the killer. Personally, I thought it was a coin flip between Michael (for inhertiance) and Charles(Revenage) when I was reading. I am a fan of time travel and fan of mysteries, but I certainly didn't enjoy the blend.

I love this, I’m glad we are in agreement because I’ve heard people raving about this book and was worried I’m the only person who didn’t write it! First of all, I found the writing was very clearly that of a journalist. It was very to the point and phrases like “the lantern was so bright that it shrouded what it was supposed to illuminate” were used more than once. Could have been a deadline thing but I thought there were places that could have used editing. Then there’s the piece of the hosts fighting back that didn’t work for me. And when the changes happen because of something a future host does, who is living the lives of the previous hosts and making those decisions? Why doesn’t his memory “catch up” to the changes that then happen? I was so frustrated that he fell for Anna when he’d killed her only the life before? What proof did he have that she’d changed so much? How could he give up his precious life and the memories of his own dead sister and run off with her murderer?! Also, who left the note telling Evelyn she had to kill herself or someone she loved would have been harmed? Maybe I missed that part. I appreciated the review, thanks for sharing ☺️

    1) The Plague Doctor explained that he had arranged the order of hosts who are the easiest to control to the hardest. The hosts are like a container that contains a soul. The eight hosts in Blackheath had two souls - one of each themselves and Aiden Bishop, as set by Dr. P. And thus, the souls are arranged in the ascending order of their power to fight back Aiden. I think the character of each hosts were explained pretty well by their actions. 2) That's known as character development. The Aiden we saw was not the Aiden who came here for vengeance. He had changed over the course of time and got over his dead sister and at the same time, realised that Anna had also changed. That was enough for him to trust her. Also, a number of scenes were shown which showed that Anna was changed. For example, the numerous times she helped Aiden. 3) There was no note. The entire plot was a plan formed by Michael, Evelyn and Felicity. And staying true to the role for which she was paid, she lied about the note.

lol that’s literally the whole point...Evelyn wanted some security for her plan. She knew a con artist like Felicity could pull off the plan without inducing too much suspicion, stand a chance of surviving and giving Evelyn a 100% percent chance of making it. Without Felicity, Evelyn could have died/ been caught; with her, both women could (and did) make it. It’s pretty obvious isn’t it?

Thanks for the clarification but I don’t think it was obvious. The story is written in a very confusing way IMO, but I’m glad it wasn’t confusing for you. Spoiler..... I was under the impression that Felicity died though, didn’t she drink the poison? Sorry - at this point it’s been a long time since I read it so it’s hard to remember the details, especially considering my confusion lol.
