The Green mile... that part you don't like doesn't last that long. Skip the description when you come to it. The rest of the story is worth it.
The biggest disservice that the book world does to SK is consider every book of his “horror”

Yep exactly. He did horror then tried different genres.... not horror other than the horror of man.

@@sueture King has fantastic horror novels, but he has a LOT of non-horror that's absolutely top class as well. If he only wrote horror we wouldn't have Shawshank Redemption, The Body (the movie Stand by Me),11/22/63, the Dark Tower series, Dead Zone, The Talisman, the Bill Hodges trilogy (Mr. Mercedes) - and a number of others. King's storytelling is unbelievably versatile, and I agree that it's a shame most people only view him as a horror author.

Any story that deals with Fear, shock and disgust should be considered Horror... Which is any realistic story about Life ... It doesn't have to involve supernatural monsters And that was my problem with the Horror genre I avoided them because I thought they wouldn't deal with themes I'd find interesting... I was wrong... They are just tragedies and are still very human And funnily enough, i read more references from the Bible in Stephen Kings works than in most other authors I read... Sometimes it will because the character is a crazy lunatic preacher OR sometimes it will be someone grappling with their faith in God... Regardless of whether it's in a positive or negative light, I really enjoy that... Because it's very human And just as many SK readers love to see Dark Tower references... I'm the same way with Biblical Scriptures being quoted/used in fiction... It's rewarding From the 10 books I've read of his so far I am assuming he was raised in a Christian household

I haven't read pet semetary But for example, from what I understand with that stories plot It's not just about the undead killing people. That's your first thought when you think of horror... Something evil that kills But really it is a story tackling themes of Death/Loss. About accepting yours and your loved ones mortality ... And it shows the evil that can come from those who don't accept it Lastly I want to say... I believe that the general public believe that Stephen Kings works are Horror in the sense that they glorify evil... But that can't be further from the Truth Evil is only portrayed as Evil in his works... Evil is not placed upon a pedestal and worshipped... I'm never cheering on Evil when reading his novels... He is not a satanic writer
To be fair, King was not an old man when he wrote Carrie….and apparently he was a teacher (before he switched to being a writer full time) so as a teacher he probably saw a lot of bullying and shaming of students which probably bothered him into writing this story.

The thing is with Stephen King is he has such a diverse backlist and writes such a a variety of books that there are bound to be books that you don’t like. I don’t know of any hardcore Stephen King fans who absolutely love every single book. I feel like we all have those ones we really don’t like *cough cough* Carrie. ❤️
For Carrie, you complain that Stephen King was an old man - it was published when he was 26. You make lots of comments about not connecting with older characters or POVs. That’s more about the reader than the writer.
@pedestrianandroid

I read Carrie recently in my late thirties you have to appreciate the psychology of it all
Literally today I thought about how rare my two obsessions felt together and here you are, talking about Stephen King with a Taylor Swift album behind you ❤ Loved the video!!
I really do think SK stories hit people differently because, sometimes, where you’re at in your life and/or what’s going on in your life can influence your perception. Sure, it’s that way for a lot of books, but the “when” in your life is significant. Also, if you read a book in the 80s that was written in the 80s it just lands differently because you’re living that same world. 🤷♀️
The Bill Hodges trilogy produced one of his best female characters, Holly, who keeps popping up and sounds like she's getting her own book...take my money now! Rose the Hat and her group was the most compelling part of Doctor Sleep and I would love a full-length book for them. Gerald's Game and Dolores Claiborne are new favorites for me.
I would definitely read Needful Things, it's a classic and Leland Gaunt is an iconic villain! I'd also highly recommend The Dead Zone and Christine for more of his classic work, and Four Past Midnight for a solid short story collection

Joyland was actually surprisingly heartfelt and fun. It’s not a typical King book, but it’s more of a coming-of-age story with a mysterious carnival murder-case at its heart and there’s also a character with ESP.
The Mist is actually really good…open to interpretation kinda ending - nothing like the movie ending at all which was just heartbreaking 💔

I think with “The Body” many are familiar with the co inn of age movie “Stand By Me” it’s probably one of my favorite movies. Even though it takes place in the 1950’s may can relate, connect and remember when they were twelve. 😊
OMG what a coincidence that you posted this video when I've been rewatching your Stephen King vlogs these past few weeks because I'm finally reading his books and can watch the spoilery parts!! The fact that you've read 19 Stephen King books and did not know the significance of the number 19 is amazing. If you ever read THE DARK TOWER you will know how important the number 19 is. This is an awesome coincidence. Let me give an example: In THE SHINING there is a room numbered 217. King said if you spilt 2 from 17 and add them together you get 19. In DUMA KEY, a lot of names are made up of 19 letters. There are many examples but I won't say because of potential spoilers. But do keep an eye out for the number 19 in Stephen King books (especially if you'll read THE DARK TOWER series.) I love your Stephen King content the most. This video was a treat. Thank you, Gabby.

so interesting! Doctor sleep is one of my favorites of his that I've read, and the movie is one of my all-time favorite films. I am not super super obsessed with The Shining so i think im more interested in the effects of what happens in that one on Danny and seeing him get older and then mentoring Abra is super interesting to me. I loved Revival, it’s one of my favourites, but fair warning: it is bleak. It’s one of his better endings too. The Mist is good, but the movie is better - even Stephen King has said this!
Hey Gabby, you should read Dolores Clairborne, Needful Things (seriously underrated) and Rose Madder. I have read 50+ of his works and these are my recommendations considering your taste!
Me and my family worked a long and labor heavy life. Reading books like "Holes" and "The Long Walk" , had me grinning because of how relatable the characters described getting physically exhausted and sore.
King is the man! The thing I love about his books isn't just that they're genuinely scary, but that they're packed with extreme amounts of emotion and a genius understanding of the inner working of the human mind.
I would love to see more of the dedicated Stephen King vlogs 😍
I’ve read a few. I think Pet Sematary, The Shining and It are my favorites I’ve read so far. I found that I half to be in a certain mood to read his books because they can be so detailed and sometimes dense. Great video Gabby. The Green Mile is my fave SK book and movie. I have seen the movie a zillion times and it eats me up every time, If you haven’t seen it you must, John Coffey is one of his best characters. I read the books when they were first released and they brought it out in 6 parts and you had to wait a month for the next instalment. The next year they brought it out as a full book and I have read it many times since.
I love Lisey's Story but I think you have to be a bit older to really appreciate it. I tried it at 23 and thought it was boring but then I read it in my late thirties and it was whole different experience. I personally think Revival is very underrated and think it is so creepy. Also, The Body definitely is better as a movie and the same goes for Silver Bullet aka The Cycle of the Werewolf.

11/22/63 is by far my favorite!
Enjoyed your tier ranking and glad you laid out the inevitability that we all have unique tastes in and experiences with books. I love Needful Things (sort of a companion to ‘Salem’s Lot), but I prefer Different Seasons to Four Past Midnight. I’m also a big fan of The Green Mile and glad you’re willing to give it another chance. I know you were initially put off by Paul’s UTI, but it really is pretty much only in the first book and is critical to a couple of subsequent developments in the storyline. Another to consider that’s not on your TBR - The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. Happy reading!

It's SUPER weird though, so be prepared to feel like...WTF just happened. Cujo scared the shit out of me when I read it as a teenager. I've been reading his books for almost thirty years. For the past couple of years I've been re-reading them in order of publication so I can refresh my memory.
Hi Gabby! I have been reading King since my cousin gave me paperback copies of Carrie, ‘Salem’s Lot and Night Shift when I was about 8 years old in the mid 70’s. Yes, I am old now and it was totally inappropriate reading material. Since then I have read pretty much all of his books and short story collections when they were released. I think the issues you have with some of his books are a generational thing. I have gone back and reread some and was like “ew” at some points. So I totally get it. I definitely recommend Skeleton Crew and All Dark No Stars for short stories. I LOVED Joyland, not so much horror but great vibes. Happy reading!!!! 😊📚
My goal is to read all Stephen King books, so this was so fun!! It also just made me buy a "Misery" inspired shirt haha Quitters Inc is also a short story that stayed with me years later!! So. Good. Yessss to more Stephen King reading vlogs!!
Lmao I love how you got ahead of the King stans who would inevitably leave ridiculously rude comments below with the “hold your breath” warning 😂 I’m not the biggest fan of King but there’s a few classics I’ll still probably get to eventually! So far The Shining has been my favorite and Revival was pretty good too
I love your t-shirt! Pet Sematary is one of my favorite King books. There is a misconception that King only writes horror. He writes fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers. I have read 47 books by Stephen King. Some of them more than once. I’m currently rereading IT with Kelsi over at Slime and Slashers for our Year of King project (2022). It would be extremely hard for me to rank his books. My absolute favorite is probably Salem’s Lot because of its creepy vibes. Since you enjoyed 1922, I would recommend reading the rest of the collection (Full Dark, No Stars) that it’s part of. I enjoyed every story in that collection. I have so many favorites, too many to comment on. 11/22/63 is among them, and I actually got to see him in New Orleans when he went on tour for it. I enjoyed this Stephen King ranking video. I think you ranking them with Schitt’s Creek tiers is a great idea. I’ll definitely check out your SK vlogs and hope you do some more in the future.
Since you don't like a lot of King's, check out Robert McCammon. Boy's Life is coming of age, small town, with some horror elements. He also has his version of The Stand called Swan Song. I haven't read it yet (soon) but a lot of my friends Love Love this book... like book of the year book.
I absolutely loved Pet Sematary! I’ve also read The Green Mile and Misery so far, and I’m currently reading Salem’s lot
Omg! I miss your SK vlogs!
I would love to see one on Desperation that's one of my top 3 favorites very few seem to mention
King's 11/22/63 got me to read him after dismissing King for years. I was duly impressed. You won't be happy to hear this, Gabby, but the Mr. Mercedes trilogy were my next best favourites. I am going to tackle the Gunslinger books next.
THANK YOU! I realize this video old but I've been trying to finish reading The Long Walk for literally years. It is SOO BORING. Great to see someone else feels this way.
