The SEGAGuys get NetLinks - Playing SEGA Saturn Online in 2024

Ойындар

Thanks to ‪@SEGASATURNSHIRO‬ the SEGAGuys were able to purchase a pair of Netlinks for the channel.
In this first taster of what will likely be series of Sega Saturn internet based content, this video features a montage of gameplay as James The Segaholic and Dan the Mega Driver go head to head.
All footage is captured from real Sega Saturn consoles with official Sega Saturn modems, made possible by the astounding work in the community.

Cheers mate! Can you imagine if this had been globally rolled out back in the Saturn’s time on market?! Would have blown our minds … well, it still blew our minds and it’s 2024! 😂

Unbelievable seeing the Saturn in a live environment, only game that was noticeable lag for me was Daytona, WWS online for me was an absolute bloody dream for me back in the day so this is amazing to see God bless the Saturn community

Great video lads! So cool to see this working again in 2024. Can you imagine how mind blowing this would've been in the mid 90's??? Chu Chu Rocket was the first online game I ever played on the Dreamcast years later (and I never played any other DC games online). I never did any online stuff on the PS2 or Xbox, the PS3 was the first console I really started to get into online gaming (and by 'get into', what I really mean is getting continually spanked at Call of Duty by a load of 12 year olds). Online Sega Rally looks great. Daytona CCE looked like it was struggling a bit though? The frame rate looked a bit more chuggy than it normally does. Did it feel that way when you were playing it?

Cheers mate. And aye, Daytona felt like it was slowed down a touch, like the foot wasn’t to the floor, yet the controls were responsive enough. In a strange way it feels like Saturn NetLink/XBand was a precursor to the online arcades we see from SEGA today. Most of the titles on Saturn that were online were coin-op ports, delivering that one v one arcade experience with mates hundreds of miles apart. Another of those head scratching decisions that SEGA were sitting on this and didn’t bother their arse to support it properly. Even in the US, it felt like SoA were more focused on the “low cost PC” aspect with web browsing, email, plus a bit of gaming. Then there’s the infrastructure aspect, could SEGA have worked with network providers across the UK and Europe to get a standard for NetLink? Looking back, there were challenges with BT to get Dreamcast ready, and it was due to BT and the network not being ready that the Dreamcast launch slipped to 14/10/99. Glad you enjoyed the video mate, we’ve got loads of NetLink content coming over the next weeks and months.

April, 2024. And I still didn't play anything online. In fact online requirements to download this and that, is the reason PS3 was the last console I bought. If I was interested in register this and that, sign up for account, download blabla I would simply play on PC. The reason I got into console gaming in the first place was to avoid all that nonsense.

Grab yourself a Saturn with a broken disc drive on the cheap and stick a Fenrir in there, Liam. You’re right though, if we’d kept all our stuff from back in the day we’d be sitting on a proverbial goldmine. 😂

Crazy to think Sega was doing this 10 years before Sony got their act properly together with the PS3 online, PS2 was so poor I wouldn’t even say that counts. Looks quite responsive considering the age and tech involved, impressive.

Yeah, that’s exactly it mate. When you consider the age of the console and modem and the method being used to connect both players, it’s remarkable how well it works.

Hey Tom! It’s a direct dial via IP address using a Line Voltage modem connected to your PC. One person “waits for a call” and the other person dials their IP address. The NetLink is hooked up to the Line Voltage modem via the standard telephone cable, the PC basically acts as a booster and the call goes through the tunnel script that Joe (SEGA RPG Fan) wrote. No servers needed!

Yeah, it’s all made possible thanks to Joe’s (SEGA RPG Fan) tunnel script and the USB line voltage modem that’s part of the kit SHIRO! provided us. When you see it all working, considering the age of the hardware, it’s pretty remarkable and a ton of fun!
