Links to everything mentioned in the video can be found in the video description. This video was originally only intended for my Chinese channel, as there isn't much about Saturn homebrew in that language (and you can still spot a place in the video where I forgot to change the language to English!). However, since I had already gone to the effort of editing the video I thought it would be worth doing an English narrated version too. Hopefully it'll inspire some people to get into Saturn dev! Anyway, that really is my last video until late October. Enjoy the rest of the summer and I'll see you all then!

@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials even the sonic game did too. Honestly that doesn't feel very sonic to me though, too slow. I think i'd be better to have the camera locked behind sonic and have him running forwards the whole time while navigating obstacles like sonic adventure, you could unload the geometry as it passes off screen to give more draw distance infront and since the camera is locked you don't have to worry about the player turning around. The second level of Ninpen is more like crash bandicoot and it works really well also, a 3d sonic game on the saturn could totally have benefitted from the interaction between vdp1+2 if sega had gone there, instead we got sonic racing lmfao.

Wouldn’t it save a lot of time, energy and work if retro console developers worked on giving Godot support for legacy hardware? Or they could work together on a brand new cross platform engine. Would it be possible to make a 2D one that supported consoles as different as 16 bit and the generation above it? Not sure if these are dumb ideas.

@@shiva_MMIV Would it be far from ideal because the custom engines developers built for each game/series were tailor made to squeeze as much performance as possible out of a particular console? Think I read that before and forgot. Even a custom retro engine with support from PS1 and N64 and up to modern consoles would be out of the question right? What I envisioned was a retro engine that would make it much easier to create and port retro console games to present day platforms, developers would not have to rely solely on a small group of owners of a discontinued console as a source of revenue. Gamers playing a new game ported from an old console to the newest machines would be saved from buying an emulated copy.

Not surprising considering how challenging it was to develop for, the lack of strong documentation, and it's short lifespan (which meant most developers only got to release one game for it). There are already homebrew/indie devs showing the hardware was much more capable than the commercial games would indicate, but it'd be great if it were integrated into SGDK so that even more developers could work on it.

"Games in the queue were effectively jammed into a box as fast as possible, which meant massive cutting of corners in every conceivable way. Even from the outset, designs of those games were deliberately conservative because of the time crunch. Oh and if you REALLY wanted to take advantage of the RAM cart... toss in VCD card support as well. Stream compressed frames to the VCD in realtime, so the backgrounds can be animated. Doesn't have to be extremely high framerate, whatever you can stuff into RAM at the time. Some scenes could get more animation, but less camera angles, and vice versa. If you can feed the decoded image back to VDP2 you could potentially still pan and zoom.

Marvel VS Capcom was ordered by Sega of America's 90s staff to NOT be made for the Sega Saturn because they knew it would be Sega Saturn perfect like the previous two games and they wanted to force people in North America to buy the Dreamcast instead of Sega Saturn because it was 90s Sega of America who killed the Sega Saturn... so it is pretty obvious that the game would have been arcade perfect or better and superior to the Dreamcast version. As for Neo Geo CD... plenty of SNK NeoGeo MVS/AES fan devs exist... they will not do all that work because they are not getting paid for it... the difference with Sega fan devs is that a lot of this work started since the 2000s and only now are we seeing some basic tech demos but no professional grade Sega MegaDrive or Sega Saturn or even Dreamcast games exist other than Watermelon Games and one or two others who did original games that can be compared to efforts from the pros in the 90s.

Just imagine what could have been done if the Saturn had a different trajectory in the market. That RE2 showcase, on that original engine, is an absolute marvel! I still consider the Saturn and the Dreamcast as the 2 most underrated consoles of all time, specifically for this reason. We got glimpses of what was capable on these systems (Panzer Dragoon, Burning Rangers, on the Saturn, Shenmue, Sonic Adventure 2, Nomad Soul, on the DC), but never really got enough titles that pushed the systems to their full capabilities (and doing it in a concise and consistent manner. Because, for example, Burning Rangers had some nasty framedrops at times). I adore these consoles so much, and I'm so glad that people are kind of keeping them relevant one way or another!

Yes but RE2 doesn't seem very demanding in terms of polygonal load... Wouldn't one SH2 be sufficient for that, and dedicate the second one to decoding compressed images? It doesn't much matter for homebrew, I guess. Especially if you're not releasing RE2 primarily as a technical showcase, but rather demonstrating an engine for homebrew games (doesn't even have to be horror genre, could be exploration/puzzle games that use a lot of 2D backgrounds for various angle shots with polygonal characters). Oh, with homebrew games in mind one thing you could improve over this straight RE2 style engine (especially if you're using the RAM cart) would be adding support for high-res mode and realtime panning and zooming of higher resolution images. Zooming and panning higher-res images would actually eliminate the need for quite so many shots as well... so background RAM usage wouldn't necessarily skyrocket by a factor of 4, so the 4MB RAM card could probably get the job done. Actually... even without the RAM cart, there are a lot of times where using a single higher-pixel-count image (taller or wider or both) and panning while running at standard res could be more efficient vs using multiple images, both in terms of appearance and RAM usage. It's a different approach though, so not necessarily applicable to RE2, as it subtly changes the game.

Happy to highlight the great work you guys are doing. I wanted to include your game, but I couldn't find it when making the video (I was searching for "pony saturn game" but nothing came up). I'll probably do another updated video sometime next year too, so could include it then. Keep up the good work!

Nice avatar, was about to make the joke that Pigsy talking about the Saturn meant he would do a SoTN port when the system already has one. Didn't know the PS1 version had enough advantages for someone to actually do it, haven't played the game myself, I'm following Pigsy's port because it's really neat.

Happy the system is getting some love, but where the Saturn really shines for me is 2d and super scalars with massive sprites and creative effects. Most of these seem to be aiming to replicate a ps1 rather than letting the Saturn be its own beautiful thing

I really feel like Sonic on the SEGA Saturn should have gone down the chase camera racing game route, rather than try and figure out how to make 3d platforming work. Deep down, it's a racing game that happens to have obstacles. If they had taken the basic idea of Sonic R, ripped out the Mario Kart theme, made it a long straight course instead of a circuit, and added some danger and mayhem, they could have had one of the earliest 'infinite runner' style games that people get hooked on

Saturn done very well in Japan outselling the N64 at the time. I don't know why people think that cos it didn't sell well in America it didn't do well globally.
