The Science of Deer Hearing & Smelling! Series: Deer Science w/guest Dr. Karl Miller

In this episode we continue our series on the science of whitetail deer, and how knowing that is our greatest leverage, our greatest potential to become better hunters. In part two we are joined again by the well-known research scientist Dr. Karl Miller of the University of Georgia Deer Lab. He has done incredible research over the years on deer and made some impactful discoveries. We’re going to talk about deer hearing and sense of smell, and how this knowledge should impact our hunting. There are a lot of myths out there, so see how this science stacks against your preconceived ideas. This is a very High IQ episode.
And, you’re going to want to write some of this overflowing wealth of wisdom down, and reflect on it after to get the most out of it. Our free journal is the best way to do that - download it below. Ok, so here are the top things to look for during this episode:
• Regarding how deer actually perceive smells - what are the quantitative and qualitative differences compared to us humans? Quantitative refers to amounts or quantities, qualitative aren’t measurable with numbers, but are qualities they hold.
• Can you cover up your scent, as popular with many hunters and products of “cover scent”
• Can you actually eliminate enough of your scent to make a difference in the woods with scent control?
• How good is deer hearing really, and what does that mean for us hunters and how we treat noises we make?
And there is a lot of in depth science stuff in here, almost too much to digest - you may want to listen a few times and really think about how it applies, and our FREE journal to help HERE: deeriq.com/journal/

I know when it comes to hunting deer, it`s impossible to hide my scent. So I try my best to hopefully convince the deer that I`m further away than I actually am.

Interesting, interesting stuff. I have implemented a three-step or five step walk routine, then stopping for a second or two, when the leaves are crunchy and the woods are loud to walk through. Has made a difference. Never used, nor even thought about the stick routine. I'll probably give it a shot though. Thanks for the vid.😊

Very interesting! The fur of a predator is probably a lot quieter than any of our clothing. Same with feet vs. boots. Therefore: barefoot in a Gille suit ;o) Thank you!

Deer will often bed down on high ground with a one way view, as long as that view is into the wind. They will choose spots with cover behind them. The deer will point his face and eyes into the view and wind and turn his ears into the cover behind him. It is near impossible to approach that deer.

I agree that deer will bed on the high ground with cover at their back, but the the wind is also at their back and they are looking downwind. Their smell is their strongest sense. They can't see through the thick cover behind them so they rely on their nose to cover that area. That's why they bed on the Lee Ward side of a hill.

I had a deer circle downwind of me in the predawn darkness in the woods only 30 yards away w/o it spooking off. It was aware of something. I did the usual unscented detergent + unscented shower routine + pine and cedar scent and real deer urine I collect in the winter time (snow) was liberally sprayed on my hat, jacket and pants. I keep the urine frozen until deer season. Whether that was a mature deer or a yearling is anyone's guess as it was too dark to see anything. The deer tried to figure out what I was for about 10 minutes before walking off. I thought that was the coolest experience and most frustrating since I couldn't see it. ---I was on the way to my treestand.

Very cool thanks for sharing. I will add if you follow my plan you won’t have to collect deer urine and put it all over yourself, and the Deer won’t even react at all. Check it out here.deeriq.com/be-a-scent-free-deer-hunter/

@@adamlewis_outdoor Great article. I'm going to buy some carbon and a Scentlok mask and tweak my routine with your suggestions. I'm quite fond of real deer urine. lol. It has a certain pizazz.

I don't know what to say about the sent control issue. I refrain from eating meat garlic and other spices. I wear clean clothes each time I hunt. I've had deer walk with in 10ft of me and have killed some of them. I've had them walk right by me giving me no indication of knowing iam there. And I hunt on the ground.

I just found your channel and have been greatly edified with the solid education in deer biology. It's kind of cool to hear things that I've gathered over the years, confirmed by scientific observations. One thing that I would exhort you to consider is that man was created in the image of God and he made the beasts of the field according to their kind. We are mankind and are not human or homosapien. As a student of the sciences, I realize that men are classified as evolved beast by the establishment and it can be difficult to hurdle the continual bombardment of propaganda and brainwashing, but we are not beasts; we are men.
