I appreciate all of your podcasts. This one in particular was very thoughtful. I live in a state relatively new to CWD and most of the push back has been because my state has started to limit baiting. As a teacher myself, I wish you had pushed back on the deer farmer when he insinuated that wildlife agencies are manufacturing hysteria to pad their budgets. The DNR doesn't own the wildlife, the people of the state own the wildlife. DNR's manage wildlife for the public trust. A question that has come up on the Meateater podcast in regards to CWD, if you knew a harvested deer had CWD, would you feed the meat to your kids? Keep up the good work.

The fact is the state gained $18,424,788 just for the 2023 deer season. That is if every hunter only bought one permit. Assuming half of the hunters purchased 2 tags then the state gained $24,368,268 yet they are broke. Seems outlandish to me...

As an avid bowhunter on both public and private land and, professionally, a statistician, Here are my observations about hunting in Michigan. Where I have spent my entire life. 1. As long as hunters continue to selfishly, go after bucks, Regardless of deer herd management, You will continue to have a problem. 2. As long as the d n r remains as arrogant as they have for the last twenty five years, All the recommendations from those people actually suffering under the existing situation will never change. 3. Related to number 2., I can guarantee you that That the conclusions that they draw from the surveys are indeed skewed. They are not only skewed, but I suspect have been manipulated To continue to purport a narrative, buy the d. N. R., Which is essentially one of laziness and incompetence. Just my opinion of course

One buck (or one archery buck and one firearm buck)and lower the cost of doe tags. Our family each person bought 6 tags every year and once they raised the prices everyone dropped to one tag or they just used their buck tag for a doe. We hunt for food once its cheaper to raise meat we quit hunting. Not to mention QDMA people around us won't let people do drives anymore like they used to back when everyone farmed. Also why not work with more farmers giving out more damage permits and add them to the hunters helping land owners. As we live off deer meat having a health herd is important. This is michigan to quit comparing to other states. If you think other states do better move there. Also against mandatory reporting, make it voluntary with incentives like $5 off a license or something. Just my thoughts. The economy is so bad raising prices will just make alot of poor people quit hunting. Willing to listen and change mind if it makes sense.

I'm all about getting kids into the woods and teaching them good woodsman skills.. I feel taking a 8yr old kid into the woods and taking a nice mature buck in September isn't teaching the kids anything. When I was a kid, we had to have had a hunters safety certificate and had to wait until I was 12yr old to use archery equipment and at least 14yr to have rifle with an adult. But that taught me alot about hunting and woods but I was at an age I was retaining the information and had the drive to better myself every year. A lot of these youth hunters 7-10yr old for example are not learning anything about hunting and to be honest I know that a 8yr old kid is not shooting this nice big buck at 300yrd with a 300win mag... pretty sure dad "helped". I know that's not every case but I know for a fact it happens a lot.. Needs to be looked at more of an education stand point vs the money side of it

Here really is the issue the possiblity that that deer was shot on the otger property illegally hasnt been and still isnt totally out if the picture. If the deer was found ontheir place i am not saying he did or didnt gave permission on there but thats why you just follow the rules. The permission Once again, this is why hunting media makes us our own worse enemy. If that guy just never said anything hed probably been totally fine. FYI most police investigations take more than a few days if its thats serious of a case.

If they want bigger bucks then make it 4 points on one side, or have the discipline to let the little ones walk. Some of these liberals in the mucc and dnr are just going to keep fucking up the system. Bring back the real muzzle loader season. General gun hunters are idiots. There is only one way to have better bucks, let them grow. Only one way to better even the M to F numbers. Force hunters to fill doe tags. Cant kill bucks in September and expect a better herd. Also cant expect to make a hunter by doing this. Either you love it or you do not, no amount of influence will change that. I skipped school to hunt. Lost jobs over hunting. Tried to make all my kids the same. Only my daughter has that itch, one son could take it or keave it and the other son doesn't like killing animals. I never forced it, just presented the opportunity that was always available. The avid hunters are the ones who will get it done. They just need to implement a scientific plan and closely monitor the results in order to make proper adjustments.

Parents that try to get their kids into hunting have a constant battle against what the kids are brainwashed with every day.

Create a HAP permit. I get it’s expensive but likely not much over lease prices. If the HAP land gave me lots of acreage options id jump at the chance to buy a $200 permit to hunt on a chunk of land that limits hunters. If it was divided into zones and each hunter signed a zone i would like that even more. I get its the honor system but typically hunters like to stay away from eachother

Seems like younger hunter numbers are dropping is because weve made it so easy for them starting out with crossbows extra seasons. I was born in 1984 almost everone hunted when i was in school. Getting my first deer with my Browning compound hooked me for life, the challenge, rush etc. kids starting now mostly use crossbows and its not enough challenge to make them addicted and passionate about hunting, making archery season super easy is not making more lifelong hunters

How about a mandatory survey after season that everyone has to submit from like January to April online or mailed. Simple form with your deer harvested along with questions about deer numbers seem throughout season and hunter numbers etc. And you should just have to report harvest location by township not exact location and regulate from there, most northern lower townships dont need as many doe permits as most southern lower townships. Not a one size fits all situation for the whole state.
