Cal in the Field: Mule Deer by Canoe w/ OnX | S1E03 | MeatEater

Спорт

Presented by onX
In this episode of Cal’s Week in Review: In the Field, MeatEater’s Director of Conservation, Ryan Callaghan and Eric Siegfried of onX navigate around the crowds and into a hard to access piece of public land in Montana for a mule deer rifle hunt. Eric uses his E-scouting expertise alongside Cal’s river savvy to get to a spot that would be unknown and possibly forgotten without the public land data provided by onX-also a canoe, they’ll need a canoe.

As a Montana hunter born and raised I wanna thank you Cal' for embodying what it means to be an ethical hunter. Been Watching you and Rinella for years now and yall are showing the non hunting world that we're not murdering psychopaths. You guys inspire me to be a better hunter and to push myself farther than I've ever been. Stay safe, God bless and keep at it.

I have watched hundreds of hours of video footage of hunting, deer, caribou, moose, bear and other species over the last five years. I have come to this conclusion, if I could go on only one guided hunt before I die, it would be with Brian Callaghan. I would not care if we even saw the target species, this is one special person.

@@Bigjohnson1515 About what? Meateater cussing more than usual in season 8 or the fact I don't watch TV except for hunting videos? I do the later because watching the filth on TV corrupts my character. If I watch all the episodes of hunting public for instance I get no filth such as sex, cussing, immorality, homosexuality etc. Just pure clean entertainment. I don't want to end up on the 6 o'clock news for no sins I committed by not keeping myself from bad influence. It works for me man. Before I was a Christian I was into gangs and getting deeper into drugs and gangbanging etc. Till a retired airforce high ranking soldier took me hunting. I left gangs after that first hunt. This changed my life like I said it works for me.

Cal is still the stand-out preseter in the MeatEater outfit...and I still think that first "miss" was a bad hit. *that said, showing the ugly parts of this 'game'(misses/self-doubt, worry for the animal), is important and real. The way that buck mule kicked and was hunched up with his ears pinned back before the second are all tell tale signs he was hit. That being said though we don't know how much searching was done off camera and is just a bad situation all the way around. Cal readily admitted how much that can play into the confidence on a hunt and what a mind game it becomes. Props to Cal and the meateater crew for posting this even if though it didn't go the way that anybody would want.

As a hunter, it's just so nice to see that other hunters miss too... Most other hunting videos only show the perfect shots. We know Cal is a great hunter even when he misses once (EVERY hunter does sooner or later), but it's just nice to see that hunting isn't always easy. And to see how it bothers him, how he checks his gun to be sure what was up instead of staying in the good spot with the many deer, how honest he is, just shows that he really is an ethical hunter.

It was my idea in the moment of frustration and I ended up getting posed with a beer in one hand, a case of said at my feet next to a cold fire, and the mouse on the end of a stick. A diligent search for hit marks, tracks is a fair duty of an ethical hunter. I had several occasions when observing buddies or guides claimed a miss on my shots. And then a proper search and tracking revealed in most cases a hit, not always ideal, but the animals were down within 300 meters max.

Appreciate the honesty. Really hope you spend time getting to know your rifle. The last shot sounded like it hit something...

That statement about E scouting only showing so much is such an understatement lol. I did some solid E scouting this year and then when we got into that mess it was pure unforgiving hell on foot. It looked great from the air though lol.

17.49 after he shoots i was sure it sounds like that bullet smacks somthing really hard but idk could have been hitting somthing other than the deer

The Odorian Ha! I’m sitting here drinking a cup of coffee by myself and said out loud, “that’s a hit.” I thought the same thing.

given that the microphone is a couple hundred yards away from the deer at least, I think any sounds are coming from the area around the hunter

I missed on a 4x4 bull elk this year after 5 days in pouring rain in northern alberta... such a heartbreaking feeling. Good hunt boys

Not a big fan of the action movie musical numbers, but I’m here at meat eater because of Cal, the Latvian eagle and Steve. Smart, sustainable, responsible hunters I’ve learned a lot from and enjoyed every minute.
