The Science of Buck Personalities | Series: Deer Science w/guest Dr. Bronson Strickland.

In this episode we’re in part 3 of our series - The Great Leverage of Hunters - Deer Science. What we actually know about deer, and how they operate, directly translates into our hunting decisions and success - which is why this is super important for us to know as much as possible about. In this episode we are joined by Dr. Bronson Strickland of the MSU deer lab, looking at collared buck studies, and what they reveal about specific buck personalities that even surprised the scientists.
And, you’re going to want to write some of this overflowing wealth of wisdom down, and reflect on it after to get the most out of it. Our free journal is the best way to do that - download it below. Here are the top things to look for during this episode:
• What is the biggest surprise of all the collared buck studies to Dr. Strickland?
• Why do certain bucks disappear, then reappear later at your hunting spot or on your trail cameras - we’ve all probably had a buck just vanish, and this explains what actually happens?
• What are the 2 main personalities of bucks, and how can we figure this out and use it to up our odds to take a particular buck?
And a whole lot more High IQ stuff in there!

Deer have been found swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. The barrier islands somehow can maintain herds. Some deer get into extreme migration.

My target buck this year, I’ve named the 17 buck. He’s a 5yo that always shows up on the 17th of November. Hopefully that pattern continues!

If you live in Oregon, the Mt. Lion will kill him the 16th... HORRIBLE game management in Oregon. (Anti hunters run the show).

Thanks for another great episode! I recognized Dr. Strickland from MSU''s great work.. Deer are so complicated and amazing..I've been lucky to live and walk alongside suburban and "wild" deer for over 40 years, a tremendous blessing and enlightenment thanks to them letting me spend time so close to them..I have to find a way of sharing to the benefit of different interests and needs..a project I'm working on! I would like to bring up the fact that the common (outside)housecat also takes similar "vacation-getaways" as we might call the excursions.. Both animals have an instinctive curiosity that allows them to assess and discern to exploitable knowledge to enhance their situational and routine awareness of their immediate & connected "zones" of activity. I am curious: *Could there be a latent migration instinct compulsion @ work? *Could there be instinctive compulsion to break routine for security in home range core, or as daily routines become mundane, a need to break complacency & experience novelty to keep "preparedness attitude" from stagnating? (Over complacency is a risk, as is plus well beaten routine of security egress, "nowhere to run when you're already home, they know where you are") *Active pressures or "treasure" scents may play a role..food, predation, reactive or investigative impulses? *Also, regarding "colonization"..deconflicting/depressuring of groups and the individual's need to sometimes just find their own quiet places .. Sometimes, my deer buddies just aren't in the mood, and regard my presence as "dominance by distraction" and want space..they need to get away from family that they spend their WHOLE DAILY LIFE WITH.. IS THIS ALSO BENEFICIAL AS SECURITY NET SPREAD? DOES THIS SCALE UP FROM "zone to zone" TO "opposition" FROM HOME? I'm not sure how well I articulated myself, I'm an amateur who simply has had a unique experience & opportunities, and been able to listen, learn, acknowledge and respect best as I can as an equal and an "ambassador" as a neutral "non-intentionally predatory human tourist to nature" I have had the opportunity to actually work together with, and coordinate by known mutual communications and understandings, and "negotiate" with whitetail deer..it is a whole different field from working with equine or K9, but I love it.. I get to experience the "culture of deer" & how they pass knowledge and tactics down the lineage.. I get to sit with deer bedded in their secret world, rather than in a chair with a good dog @ my feet on my porch! I have deer who "defend" me as their own family, throwing "hackles, glare & block" @ humans or animals which act in a dominant or other threatening manner. The discernment they can develop is amazing..it is one of their survival tactics. *Active area denial of local or transient ner'do well individuals who engaged in tresspass, vandalism, theft, basic stranger danger or any other form of dominance towards the "home property" or when "escorting" me was more effective than K9.. I would be "blocked" and expected to follow as the matriarch pointed out and adjudicated evidence on the property.. presence of people, deer, animals, activities outside of norm or accepted, and dumping..I get brought along on the security check & trackdown.. (One night, i got blocked on my way into work, because the matriarch had to show me where a truck had driven into the back lawn, and turned around..as vehicles belong on pavement, not transiting lawns..) If you got this far, you have the same passion of curiosity... I'm glad to have been brought down this path, and see there's so many facets, so much to learn.. Thank you ALL for your hard work!

Good shoooowww. As usual my friend. I know I'm the one that suggested MSU. Unfortunately I take a little bit of what Branson says, with a grain of salt now. Knowing he hunts, hunting clubs. Not that I blame him, I probably would take a couple people up with the offer. Now and then. But, I enjoy the thrill of public land hunting. And I'm not saying I don't utilize the information their science providers. Although at times, I find it a bit skewed, for lack of a better word. Again, utilize every bit of information I can. Definitely somewhat jealous of them guys, how awesome would it be, to get paid well, very well, processing deer information!😅. Thanks for the vid my friend😊

Watched again. Couple things, they have a lot of useful information, as I said before. One of your comments triggered some thought. And I think I disagree. No, I know I do. Maybe you don't realize what you said. Not sure. Your thought was that the more mobile buck, or one of the wanderers as he described, would be harder to kill, then one that doesn't wonder much. Maybe you spoke without thinking. I could definitely see where one that stays close to home, and knows every single noise, movement, smell, etc. in their area, might even be harder to hunt, then the mobile buck. Just a thought. 🤔. I also wonder if any of their Intel, let them know or not, that one of the mobile/wandering bucks have more success with the ladies, or breed more offspring than the Homer's? Just another thought.😊
