The Santa Barbara & Ventura Colleges of Law Virtual Debate: California Proposition 22

Visit www.collegesoflaw.edu. The Santa Barbara & Ventura Colleges of Law is committed to making conversations about public policy accessible to the communities affected by it every day.
The Colleges of Law has been hosting debates about California propositions since 2016. This year it hosted a series of three debates virtually. In this third installment of the series, two members of the community debated Proposition 22: the App-Based Drivers as Contractors and Labor Policies Initiative.
Arguing "Yes" on Prop 22 is David Cruz, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens Council 3288. Cruz is a veteran broadcast journalist and commentator on the American landscape. Previous media posts include NBC News, MSNBC, CNBC, iHeartMedia, Salem Media Network, and Fox News. He also anchored the nation’s first syndicated bilingual news broadcast for CNN Radio Network.
Arguing "No" is Rey Fuentes, a Skadden Fellow at the Partnership for Working Families. Fuentes has been active in local workers’ rights advocacy, having served as the editor-in-chief of the Berkeley Journal of Employment and Labor Law and as a student director of the East Bay Workers’ Rights Clinic. His work focuses on organizing and advocating for Bay Area transportation workers who have been misclassified as independent contractors. In his recent report, Rigging the Gig, he provided a window into the negative effects of Proposition 22 on gig workers in California.
Listen to their arguments to get a better understanding of the issues and consider whether you’ll vote "yes" or "no" on Prop 22 in November.
