The Sandman | First Look Teaser Breakdown + Screen to Comic Comparison
Фильм және анимация
Netflix recently released a Teaser Trailer (First Look) for their adaptation of Neil Gamain's classic comic The Sandman. In this video I breakdown what we see in the trailer and even do a screen to comic comparison to see how close it is to the DC comic book source material.

Gaiman as EP is enormously encouraging, and this teaser is almost frame-for-frame from Preludes and Nocturnes. I want this so much, my teeth ache.
I have been a huge Sandman fan from the beginning, and the fact that Neil is so heavily involved in this adaptation gives me a lot of hope for it. I know they will probably have to make at least some changes to translate the work from comic form to film, but the fact that Neil is more than happy with everything so far gives me a good feeling that we will finally be seeing a live action version of the books that stays as true as possible to the spirit and visual style of the original source material. I see a lot of people who have been upset since the casting choices were originally make public, but I for one am willing to trust Neil's instincts and those of the crew he is working with and hope that I am as happy with the end result as he seems to be.

Also a very long time fan. Wish I had your optimism but even (especially) with the creator of a beloved series onboard it still possible that the medium won't translate well. Ever seen any of the adaptations Steven Kings works that he was heavily involved in. After watching this trailer the mood feels wrong and my gut says the directors and editors don't know noir or fantasy enough to do it any real justice. I trust my gut. This feels like The Wheel Of Time letdown all over again.
If they nail Doll's House... this can be TV History...
‘Passengers’ was and still is one of the darkest,twisted comic issues that I have ever read. Will be hiding my eyes behind my fingers if they follow the comic accurately. Stoked for this,for years I thought it would be unfilmable. Please,please prove me wrong.
The most accurate adaptation of Gaiman's ouevre done so far was the BBC version of "Neverwhere" from 1996. While it was done on a relatively low budget, it was fantastic. I really hope this production is faithful to the original material, because great writing doesn't need to be reinterpreted for the screen. Just take what's on the pages...and tell the story.

@@haroldvonschwartzenstien3581 Agreed. Neverwhere was a faithful adaptation. The BBC don't always get things right, but when they decide to adapt something for TV, they're happy to have the original creators on board all the way, and that's got a lot to do with its success. And I think Neil Gaiman was involved with Good Omens all the way too, and was happy with deviations from the plot. And that didn't disappoint either. But I think they made the effort with Good Omens, so that the door for future Terry Pratchett adaptations might be receptive at some point. And American Gods still feels very Neil Gaiman, although it's largely gone its own way, because of his involvement. Legally, a production company can buy a property and adapt however they want. But you have to respect the canon. And understand that creator opinion and input makes a huge difference.

That first scene of Dream gave me chills. It’s so close to the comics. I’m so excited for this adaptation!
I finished my favorite John Constantine novels, and just starting reading Sandman last month because of the overlay of the stories...How was I to know this show was coming...must have been a dream
Sandman got me back into comics after 15 years when it was first issued in Vertigo. I am awed by this trailer, but not too surprised. If it is as good as 'Good Omens' I will be very happy.
I hope they do a better job than they did with American Gods. It was great the first year, then went to hell.

I think the same thing happened to Am Gds as did to Game of Thrones. The writer/producers deviated from the original story, and then didn't have the talent to make those changes work. There are a lot of moving parts in a Gaiman (or G.R.R. Martin) story, and when writers push and pull the story out of shape...they end up with a lumpy mess.

That could be fun, but keep in mind that you don't need to know anything about Morpheus to watch this. Unlike, say, a superhero comic (which The Sandman decidedly isn't), this is an entirely self-contained story. Other, unrelated people used the name 'Sandman' in comics before, but Morpheus never appeared in any books before the one being adapted - his origin is in this book that's being adapted for this TV show.

The beauty of Sandman is that it transcends any budget, any idea restricted by opinion or critical review . If you read the books you know that it can never fully come to fruition. Our imagination is its worth. That is what Neil Gaiman gave us, the dream. Netflix can only do so much. I will watch as a fan but I relish the memories of reading the beauteous story.

Being a black woman growing up a fan into comics, anime/animation, arts and all sorts of geekdom it's pretty disheartening to read these comments essentially bitching about the casting of death. Death has always been my favorite but because she's being played by a black woman and not a white teen girl it means it won't be a good performance?
@tamekaphillips3413

Can we elect to give the casting a chance because Gaiman helped in picking them rather than brushing it off as "forced wokeness"? It's tiresome to see people complain over their fear of inclusivity rather than fans celebrating that it's finally being made to screen seemingly with great care considering the adaptation struggle...(aside from the audible books)
I’m a bit disappointed that Tom Ellis isn’t playing Lucifer.
I hope this isn't a fakeout and the rest is garbage. I really hope the trailer is representative of the rest of the content. What little they've shown was much better than I expected, especially from Netflix. I immediately recognized this early scene and would have been able to tell you where the footage was from even if I had no context, which is far beyond what I'd typically expect from Netflix.
Why was dream wearing the space jockey helmet from alien
@StoryDive

Thats just his helmet. They likely stole the design from alien
@random_dude26
2 жыл бұрын
The original Sandman is an old DC character called Wesley Dodds who wears a gas mask and fights crime by putting people to sleep. Neil Gaiman was tasked with creating a completely new sandman, so when creating the helm they took inspiration from Wesley Dodds and made it resemble a gas mask. In the comics, the helmet is a symbol of his office and holds a lot of power and it was made from the skull and spine of a god killed by Dream. The space jockey's helmet snout looks more like elephant trunks while Dream's helmet is more of a spine. Tried to find references to NG taking inspiration from the space jockey helmet but unable to find solid evidence. Hope that helps to some extent.
Feel free to laigh at me, but I discovered the series through the audiobook only recelnty, so in my head the perfect Dream was James McEvoy. But Sturridge looks very convincing and I can't wait to see it.

Ignore the fact that it's a DC character, it'll only give you the wrong idea. 'The Sandman' is a modern-day version of an old fantasy epic. And I don't mean Lord of the Rings, I mean _old_ - stuff like the Epic of Gilgamesh. The protagonist is the physical embodiment of the concept of dreams, and he's older and more powerful than most gods. Death is his sister. If the show is anything like the books, it will be something like a collection of loosely-connected dark fantasy stories starring various side characters, with Morpheus (Dream) being more or less involved depending on the story. In some stories he doesn't show up at all. Think of it as an anthology show with all kinds of different fantasy stories, with a few godlike beings tying them together, and in the end it usually all ties into a larger story.
