The Sandberg Game | The Signature Game of Hall-of-Famer Ryne Sandberg's Career
Спорт
A Cubs-Cardinals matchup is always electric, but the meeting between the rival teams on June 23, 1984, was truly special. It was a beautiful Saturday at Wrigley Field and the game was broadcast nationally as the Game of the Week. The Cubs rallied from behind led by Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg. Sandberg went 5-for-6 with two late-inning home runs off of Cardinals closer Bruce Sutter and seven RBI to propel the Cubs to a dramatic 11-inning 12-11 victory over the Cardinals. It became the cornerstone of Sandberg's MVP season and it let the baseball world know the Cubs were for real as they battled back to the postseason for the first time since 1945 that year. Relive the remarkable day that put the Cubs beloved Hall of Famer on the map in Cubs Productions' documentary, "The Sandberg Game," presented by Budweiser.

Delusional card fans.
Can I tell a story related to this game? I was born in England, and got into Baseball in 1988. A TV station called Channel Four showed highlights of the NBC GOW at 2.30 am! I taped the games, and watched them over and over again to pick up the rules and understand the game. In the winter that year, another station TSW showed the GOW too. On a broadcast from Fulton County stadium the Braves hosted the Cubs. Anyhow Sandberg came to the plate, and yes Bruce Sutter came on in relief for Atlanta. Bob Costas and Tony Kubek were again commentating. Bob started to tell us the viewers and Tony Kubek of how Bill Murray missed the "Sandberg Game" and desperately wanted to see it. Murray visited Costas at his New York apartment and the tape was put on. Murray revelled in the game as a diehard Cub fan. But, as Costas was telling the story Sutter threw him the splitter and Ryne promptly hit the ball out to left field! It was perfect synchronicity of great commentating and timing. I am still 32 years later a Yankee fan, but I love baseball. I now live in Ireland, and often my insomnia is perfect for watching night games with the time difference! As a MLB fan I loved this documentary, and the stories behind "The Sandberg Game".

This was one of THE greatest baseball games of all time.
I respect a lot Chicago Cubs. Ryne Sandberg is one of the greatest 2nd baseman of all time. Greetings from Mexico City.
As elementary school kids, every morning during spring training me and my little brother woke up 2 hours before the school bus would come so we could walk to HoHoKam and wait for Sandberg to get to the stadium. My heart would beat a million times a second when I saw his red Porsche turn in off the main road. Over those years, he gave me quite a few of his autograph and I still have them all (back then the players parked in the grass soccer field next to the stadium so we could walk with them to the gate). Those moments (walking next to him) and autographs he gave to me got me through my parents divorce. He will never know but thanks Ryno for helping me through those tough times!

I drove school bus in Mesa, AZ. At that time, Cubs spring practiced at Fitch Park a block over from HoHoKam where they played pre-season games. I loved going out after my morning run. The players were friendly and accessible. Billy Williams was the batting coach. I was amused how he would always grab a bat and work on his golf swing.

Just learned of Sutter's passing. As he demonstrates, he was a tough competitor on the diamond, but gracious even in defeat when things didn't go his way. The Sandberg Game wouldn't be half as good if not for the fact that Sutter had a legendary status as an untouchable closer. Nothing but respect for this all time great closing pitcher

I say this entirely without sarcasm: I'd love to hear Sandberg talk about why he peaked at 29-32 when so many players are in significant decline by then--how did he stay healthy, playing nearly every game? How did he put up 40% of his career value in just those 4 seasons? The questions that are never asked of the greats, really.
Ryno the original number 23. What a class act.
Great Era. Great Game. Great Players. Class acts- all of them. Sandberg- a throwback to a different era- a great player with great skills with much humility. Today's players should mimic this guy.

Seems like the Cubs were on every afternoon when I was a kid. It was the only team that was broadcast nationally and that made us all Cub fans. At age 8-12 is drove me to be the best Little Leaguer I could be and forever a baseball fan! RIP Harry Caray.
I wasn't a cubs fan...but I definitely was a Sandberg fan as a young kid. You had to respect Dawson, Grace and Sandberg. I actually got a warmup ball thrown to me by Ryan at a Braves game...I was hollering for him and cheering while he and Mark were tossing warmup balls and when they were done he threw it up to me in the stands. Whoever produced this video deserves an award of some kind. How fortunate that this game took place in 1984, when the importance of saving recordings had begun to be recognized. (If this game had happened in 1974, the tapes would have been erased the next day.) All the little side stories are brought in at exactly the right moments - the Cardinals starter who had 2 career starts and 44 innings total. I had forgotten that Sutter started out as a Cub. Mixing the TV and radio calls so expertly. And then you have Sandberg answering his grandson's questions, like pointing to a random fan in the stands and asking "Why is he so happy?" The only thing overlooked was that "God's umpire", Doug Harvey, worked the plate. Nobody mentioned that, which is probably how he would have wanted it.
@grimson

Solid stuff about Harvey, and you are spot on about the production and editing. Come on man, how do you not get a little chill by this: "But pappy, why do they call it the Sandberg game?" ... LOOK OUT, THERE IT IS, DEEP TO LEFT FIELD, THIS GAME IS TIED....... That is what baseball is all about. Sandberg telling it as we men, we Chicago men, have all lived it in our hearts decades ago. I well remember daydreaming in a Northside elementary school classroom, on the playground, laying in bed, wherever, it didn't matter, that I was at the plate in Wrigley, some 6.4" stud on the mound, bottom 9, bases juiced and we (THE CUBS) are down by 3.................. Do I need to tell you the rest, doubt it. I would do the rush of air from my throat to simulate crowd noise, and of course I'd do the announcer HEY HEY as my game winner bounced onto Waveland. God I loved those days. Are they gone? Somehow they just don't seem quite the same. I don't think it's because I am older, since my dad was my age when Sandberg broke the Sutter code and dad sure loved it. I don't know man, just don't seem the same.

I was at this game. It was a Saturday and we had gone up to the game with our youth group from church. We had first base line tickets about four rows deep right at the end of the bull pen (the bull pen was outside at that time). We had a mix of Cards and Cubs fans amongst the group and it was a bit of a heated rivalry between us, of course. I remember one particular call by an ump that went against the Cubs and the majority of the fans started chanting "BULLSHIT!!!" for about ten minutes. Fans in the bleachers had hand held letters and spelled it out right on national TV. When Sandberg hit the homer to tie it up in the ninth, we went crazy. We went even more crazy when he hit another to tie it up again in the tenth. When we got back home, the local news had the interview where Whitey Herzog said that Sandberg was the greatest player he had ever seen. I remember this game like it just happened five minutes ago...my heart broke when San Diego eliminated us in the playoffs. I did, on the other hand, get to see both my Cubbies and my Red Sox break their curses.

i didn't know Marquee did that. that makes me really happy. i'm a 37 year old Kentuckian who fell in love watching Ryne, Andre Dawson, Mark Grace, Shawon Dunston, Steve Buechele, Vizcaino, Hector Villanueva, and Harry Caray calling the games in the early 90s. watching this brought so much joy. you hang onto that Ryne Sandberg rookie card now!

@@BootsORiley How can you list players from the early 90's Cubs and not mention Greg Maddux.

@@unkledoda420 I did leave out ol Gregory, didn’t I.
Ryno was my first favorite player, any sport. Only game I've ever been to Cubs beat Mets 2-0 at home on Gary Mathews HR. Still my second favorite baseball player ever, only bc when I got older I fell in love with Rickey stealing all of those bases and scoring all those runs! My first sports hero will always b Ryno. I no longer have the ball that my father bought me that day but I do still have a photo of him that I can pin on my shirt. Not bad considering it was over 35 years ago.
I'll never forget the game with the Pirates when the Cubs won the NL East pennant. There were about 300 people there from Chicago and Harry Caray announced the name of every damn one of them. That said, I absolutely loved it when WGN and TBS showed all of the games every season. The Cubs and the Braves were truly America's Teams.
Great info at 23:00! Arguably changed Ryno's career from a "line drive hitter" to someone that hit for power.
Man that gives me chills! Sandberg is and will always be the greatest cub of all time!

My grandfather was born in Chicago and I remember watching the Cubs with him on TV. Sandburg played back then and that's when he became one of my favorite players of all time. Thanks for the memories!
Sarge!!! The red baron!! Ryno!! On and on. I was 19 in 1984. The most fun I ever had watching my beloved Cubbies. Look up in the first inning and Dernier is on first or second and Ryno is at the plate. Sarge is on deck. Moreland in the hole.
I remember this game like it was yesterday! I’ve been a diehard Cubs fan since 1980 and was ultra elated!! 😀😀
I was named after this man
Amazing memories!! Loved the 84 Cubs.

Same here. This is the first and only season I either watched or listened to every Cubs game for the entire season, and was so heartbroken when they lost to the Padres after taking a 2 game lead at home.
4 Years before I was born and Im a Red Sox fan. Never heard of Sandberg but hes a solid legend in my book now.
Chicago's greatest 2nd baseman, EVER!

I agree even though I grew up watching Beckert in the late 60's and early 70's. Great infield of Santo, Kissinger, Becket and Banks.

I live in Louisiana. I can’t tell you how many times I came home from school and turned on wgn and watched Cubs games. I ate, slept, and breathed baseball. Sandberg was my favorite player for sure. I copied his stance. So many memories growing watching and playing baseball and the impact he and the cubs had on me growing up. Like in Field if Dreams... the memories are so thick I have to brush from my face 😂.

Only because one-time Cub Rogers Hornsby played most of his career with the Cardinals. Hornsby is my pick for greatest second baseman of all time, but Sandberg is my pick for best Cub second baseman of all time. Hornsby had a couple of great years with the Cubs toward the end of his career but didn't really play for them long enough for me to consider him one of their greatest players ever.

One of the best second baseman to ever play the game, for any team, period.
What a great story!!!
Still to this day is my favorite baseball player. I was 9 years old and my neighbor's son lived next to Sandburg and he knew me and my brother loved baseball so he got both of us personalized and signed baseball cards. Such a great player but an even better person
A year late but Ryno always holds a special place in my heart because I was born 23 years exactly after this game and my number is 23. My parents were so close to naming me Rhyne.
The All Time Great! Sandberg was my childhood hero on the field! He came to play every single day! My 120 pound rottweiler is named after him because, they have the same grit! You were and still are the Man Ryno.
Ryne Dee Sandberg.....the GREATEST EVER to play second base

Rogers Hornsby was the greatest 2nd baseman. Not really close. What did Sandberg ever win?
Still one of the greatest games I've ever seen.
As a Dodger Fan this vid is actually pretty cool

So was I. 16 years old with my dad & sister. My sister was smart and kept her ticket stub. She gave it to me 2 years later as a HS graduation gift and I still have it!
I was in my tweens when this game took place. To this day, Sandberg is my biggest crush in sports. My heart still skips a little beat when I see him. I'm pushing 50 now, and he'll always be my first love. 💙💗

The Great Game , The American Game ⚾! Bob Costas the best vocal historian for this great game. Loved him on Ken Burn's BASEBALL. Love hearing him on the game of the Week. The man is a walking Baseball Wikipedia of fact's, stories, history, and subtleties of player back stories, customes, and out of the blue oddities!!
Thank God for 2016. It makes all our history so much more enjoyable. Also I have to admit, those mid 80s Cardinals teams were super fun. So much speed and top tier defense.
13:58 "Don't make the first out, and don't make the last out"--Gary Matthews. I love all the little bits of baseball strategy sprinkled throughout this video.
In my late 40's. Lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. I have nothing but respect for Sandburg, great player!!
My dad was at this game , his entire life he was a Yankees fan, he had just moved to Chicago for Law School and got a free ticket to this game... became a cubs fan that day
Loved this special. As a baseball enthusiast, not only do big players have games as iconic as this one on the national stage, big players (Sandberg, McGee) were big, and the little guys (Dave Owen) became local heroes!! One of the better specials I have ever seen!!! ALL HAIL BASEBALL or as Harry Caray quotes ‘Holy Cow it’s gotta be…it’s gonna be…GONE!!’
Ryne Sandberg is one of my favorite baseball player and 2nd base is my favorite position. I played second base in Gering Organization Baseball in 1996 through 1998.
