Kerry Wood's 20 Strikeout Game

Спорт

On May 6, 1998, a rookie pitcher from Texas took the mound for the Cubs against a stacked Houston Astros lineup. That pitcher was 20-year-old Kerry Wood. Wood dominated Astros hitters that day, marking his place in baseball history when he struck out 20 batters in nine innings to tie the major league record. Just four pitchers in MLB history have accomplished the feat.

    I was a delivery driver in Michigan and my boss was a huge Cubs fan. I was able to get WGN radio in my truck while driving around, but my boss couldn't pick it up on the radio in our building. We didn't have cell phones yet, just two way radios. When it got to 12 strikeouts I started calling out to my boss and counting up the strikeouts as they happened. I pulled into the parking lot just as he got to number 20 and I walked in the door and found my boss and yelled, "20!!!" and we both started jumping around and yelling. I wasn't even a Cubs fan, but it was just a cool moment and a cool way to experience it.

    @@sukhastings4200 Him staying healthy was always a big “if” though. His pitch counts were in the stratosphere even in this very early stage of his career. Flamethrowers are always liable to burnout, especially when overused. Stephen Strasburg was bubble wrapped so as to avoid him from befalling the same fate as Kerry Wood.

    I remember being at my store working at the time of this game, I had it on the radio and had several customer's telling me to change it but I said not today. I had a feeling about this kid that day. Near the end of the game my store's front area was loaded with people as we listened to the last 2 innings of the game and hearing the final strike out called giving Kerry 20 we all cheered. He holds the rookie record for strikeouts in a game, the National league record for most strikeouts in a game and shares the Major League record for most strikeouts in a game. He did that on this day, and even now 25 years later he still has them. I was lucky to have heard this game, I just wish I could have been there for it.

    Kerry Wood is 9th all time in MLB history in strikeouts per 9 innings with 10.32. Wood had 1,582 strikeouts in 1,380 innings pitched in his career. He would have been a member of the 3,000 strikeout club if it weren't for all of the injuries he endured.

    Wood said it was the fist pump at the end that hurt his elbow, not his pitching that day. That could make some sense considering that, unlike actual pitching, one generally doesn't work on proper mechanics for safe fist pumps. Celebration injuries from doing spur of the moment unpracticed things are definitely a thing in most if not all sports.

  • @SaltyChip
    @SaltyChip2 жыл бұрын

    It's crazy to now see the "fist pump" at the end knowing now that he did it because he had no walks in a complete game, and the fact that this is the point where he felt pain in his elbow which would become a big problem for him.

    With the score at only 1-0 into the 8th inning and Kerry Woods mowing the Astros down with regularity, one wonders whether the Astros might have been better served somewhere between the 3rd through the 8th innings by breaking Wood’s rhythm of repetitively striking out hitter after hitter with by dropping down some inside baseball bunting and really making him work on that mound and wonder what the Astros might do next. Factor into that equation, also, that the continual rain 🌧 made the playing field wet and Wood would be disadvantaged in having to field bunts. Of course, however, expecting players of this vintage to even know how to execute properly executed and hidden bunting skills would be expecting too much. Great performance by Kerry Woods and his battery mate. No thinking cap 🧢 on management of the “lead leading” Astros, however, as the strikeouts continued with metronome regularity even if the manager had awakened to the strategy.

    I just watched this whole game, not fast forwarding when the Cubbies were at bat. Wood was an absolute force that day! Amazing. He should have been a Cincinnati Reds pitcher because everyone knows the Reds are the best. />⚾️

    What incredible, is that this game doesn't seem to reflect the rest of his career, as his stats are painfully average, and he only played 14 seasons.

    All that movement you see here is essentially what caused that - his slurve and mechanics, plus being worked so hard led to frequent trips to the DL, and surgeries. This Kerry Wood didn't last, because it simply wasn't possible. Those pitches were just too unbelievably nasty that it came at the expense of his very health. The only question really is whether it was worth it. If Kerry pitched more conservatively, he may have had a longer, more reliable career, but he'd never have this.

    dusty had nothing to do with it. it was how managers managed. riggleman kept him in there for well over 100 today and THIS game was the first time he felt pain that would lead to tommy john that led to his career getting derailed. kerry and mark have also gone on record defending dusty and saying they were just as culpable.

    it tells you something special when this is the best singular pitching performance in baseball history...even over perfect games. no one has been better, anywhere. ever. also a real shame they didn't score that as an error. orie had poor effort and that was clearly a pretty routine, fieldable ball. almost hot dogged it. he couldn't hit and today he was the poorest defender. this should have been a no-hitter and maybe history would have looked kinder on orie as well.
