I worked in a big tire shop in Sacramento after school and we took one of our large service trucks to the Champ car, stock car and motorcycle oval dirt mile at the old California State Fairgrounds to assist in the tire part of the racing. We got to drive our big service truck to "pack the dirt track" between races. It was the very best ever. I was so lucky.

Thank you Matthew for posting this look at the Golden Age of American Open Wheel Racing. Be it AAA or USAC the Champ Dirt Cars will always be my favorite type Car and One Mile Fairgrounds Dirt Tracks across the country had the greatest racing with the toughest of the tough men driving through dust, ruts and sometimes each other. I am so glad to have found this time capsule gem. As a young boy these drivers were to me what Mickey Mantle was to most kids my age. This is absolutely beautiful!

I was at the 1967 Golden State 100. Watching this video brought back a lot of great memories. Thank you so much for posting. 🙂

About 50% of the these drivers were killed in racing accidents in the 50s and 60s. The safety cage around today's drivers has saved many lives. But in the 1950s, just putting a rollbar behind the driver was met with a lot of negativity from sports writers and some drivers. (Great video)

Many of those guys were so macho and manly that their answer to roll bar protection was summed in the phrase, "Cages are for Monkeys." Those were very dangerous times and the thrill quotient was "Off the Charts." IMO

Offy engines and skinny tires on one mile dirt tracks back in the 50s and 60s....the best racing ever.....then they destroyed it.
