Acne is the number-one skin condition in the United States, affecting not just millions of teenagers but an increasing number of adults under the guise of hormones. Typically, the first thing we reach for to deal with acne is a lotion, potion, or cream to apply to the skin-and conventional medicine doctors frequently prescribe birth-control pills. However, these approaches do not target the root cause of acne.
In this episode of my Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about the biggest triggers of acne, why we all react differently, and the top nutrients for skin health. We also discuss some frequently asked questions from our community about acne during puberty and more.
Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, The Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30 million unique downloads. Having severe cystic acne is so deflating to one’s self esteem…it leads to anxiety and depression, especially as a mature adult. I have such deep compassion for those who suffer from this.

A friends teen boy that had a horrible time with acne. He was on all these meds and getting skin treatments. Without much success I told her it could be his diet. To stop the junk food and sugar. He finally did and within a few weeks his skin was fine again. He wasn’t happy about giving up the junk food and started eating it again. But his skin broke out again. So he stopped for good and has great skin.

@Andy Accutane Journey have you tried changing your diet?? It really can make such a difference. My friend’s son stopped eating fast food. So many of the oils they use are not good for your skin and tea your whole body. Milk was a big one for him as well as grain and sugar. It made a complete difference for him. He is off of all meds and rarely has a break out.

@Andy Accutane Journey how's it going? Did you fix your diet and improve your acne? They have better treatments now for the scarring than they used to. Microneedling being one. But when the redness goes away, and it well, the scarring won't look nearly as bad.

I did almost everything wrong for my daughter, ate lots of sugar while I was pregnant, because my Lamaze nurse said all we needed was the extra calories in an extra piece of cake - but anyway I had a horrible diet anyway and I think that set up my daughters preferences for an almost all carb diet as well. the one saving grace was that I did nurse her for 2 1/2 years. And that may be why she lucked out with a perfect creamy complexion, never one earache, no need for any antibiotics at all her whole childhood, no need for glasses are braces, no weight issues, etc. So I would say nursing is pretty important.

Have to look at % daily requirements on vitamins. Easy to take too much vitamin E. Hard to find Zinc and Magnesium vitamins that have more than 10% daily so check the amounts. Just started Keto and eating much more meat and fats. Trying to stop sugar. That is helping too

Maybe my experience with my own acne can help here. The first step is to stop eating carbohydrates. For me Keto was the way to go but there are of course other options. You will see the results pretty fast. But maybe it can take 1 or 2 months. With Vitamins you'll get the results faster. Like Vitamin A (Carrotin), Vitamin B3,B5,B12 Magnesium, Zinc.. But the most important step is to stop eating sugar at all. It is a lifestyle choice and has way more benefits than just stopping acne. I hope your daughter gets better and I wish you the best :) because I know how painful it can be

I eliminated sugar, dairy & gluten from my diet for 7 months but it didn't really help my adult acne. I was also taking EFA supplements at this time which caused me sleep apnea/chocking at night, ruining my sleep. So I don't know what else is the cause of my acne, given up on the Functional Medicine approach

Could be coffee. I cut down to only 4oz a day and my skin still flared up! Finally just stopped drinking coffee. Now my skin is fine.

I guess it's different for everyone. Organic, mold tested, black coffee never did anything to my skin, ever. Now, milk is an entirely different story. All forms of dairy caused me cystic acne on my forehead, cheeks, chin and jawline. I eliminated dairy after going carnivore January 1st, 2019 but kept the black coffee (2 cups per day). It took my skin an entire 3 months to completely heal and for the first time in my adult life, I actually had skin that I was comfortable in and some family members had even commented that it appeared I had dewy and glowing skin. That was a massive confidence booster and further confirmation that dairy and I didn't get along.

There are many people who gorge themselves on sugary foods, chocolate, ice cream etc…, most people do not get acne from it. There are many people who have deplorable diets, full of junk food, most do not get acne. Getting acne is just bad luck, the luck Of the draw in life as they say.

Some people smoke all of their lives but don't get lung cancer. Lung cancer and smoking is just bad luck! Wtf are you on about. Just because some people have better capacity to deal with physiological stress when it comes to the specific symptom of acne doesn't mean it's bad luck. No hunter gatherer population ever studied had one case of acne. It is not normal in human physiology, it's a modern problem. Eating bad causes systemic problems. For some this results in acne in other it results in gastrointestinal problems, sleep issues, joint problems, autoimmune problems. It is not bad luck, it is bad education and bad choices. Stop opting out of making good decisions son.

I’m pretty sure generations before our parents had worse skin and hair. I’m not saying processed food isn’t bad for you, but you can find negative things that can impact your health even in the meat you eat because the animal releases high levels of cortisol while it’s being killed. As someone who suffered from acne and every form of auto immune disorders all of these findings are fun but in the end nothing works like modern medicine to beat acne for good
