So why are we suffering from reflux? What is the cause? Is it something we are doing or something we are eating? Is there some other factor that’s driving this epidemic?
In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I discuss simple actions you can take to uncover the root cause of your reflux, the problem with acid-blocking drugs, and more.

Another factor which I NEVER hear highlighted (even by this Dr) is bad sitting posture. While bio chemistry is obviously the major cause of GERD, simple physical pressure on the stomach sac itself forces stomach contents upwards. People who "don't sit up straight" usually with their shoulders slouched forwards often at keyboards physically press down on the rib cage which in turn presses your lungs & diaphragm down onto your stomach sac and into your lower abdomen causing increased pressure within the stomach with the result of forcing acidic stomach contents upwards. Sitting up straight with your shoulders back, together with slow deep breathing (and even holding your arms up straight above your head for a minute or so) lifts and expands your ribcage and relieves the downward pressure on your stomach, increasing its internal volume and reducing the chance of stomach contents being pushed upwards into the oesophagus.

@@gourav9608 I'd never heard of LPR before, but have just had a quick read up on it.... That seems like one stage further than GERD. Not nice.... but yes the principle of good upright seating posture I feel would still give the same benefit as the LPR you suffer from also seems to have GERD as the root cause. I'm not medically trained, so I can't offer personal advice on your condition, I only use my own independent thought and then try to put it into practice, and in my case it paid off handsomely. Its not always easy to develop good seating posture, as when you're absorbed by your reading/viewing/gaming etc your mind loses focus on your posture and you will tend to slouch again, but if you feel even the first burning sensation of GERD then it should be uppermost in your mind to immediately assume an upright sitting position with your shoulders back... not uncomfortably so, but not slouched. I find for me that when I do that, more often than not I can get away without medication (my antacid "glug" as I call it). I've never taken omeprazole long term... only after any particular foods have triggered an acute attack of GERD (remember those foods and avoid them in future), and I've not taken any Omeprazole for over a year or more now. I've advised one or two work colleagues with reflux, and they seem to agree it has improved their condtion, so if correct posture helps ease your discomfort, then if it was me and after a while I felt able to lower my medication, I would personally go for it.... but please think carefully, and only do what YOU feel is best for YOU. As an aside, I also have my own regime and practice for easy "bowel movements", which when I related it to a friend who confided in me that he has suffered for years from diverticulitis, told me weeks later it had made a considerable difference to his life. The unfortunate side effect of me giving him that advice though is that he now calls me his "Poo Guru". Best of luck for the future.

Dr . Hyman is such a great doctor, and so spot on! I had pretty bad acid reflux, and had been taking Lansoprazole WAY too long, and wanted to stop. I did research and realized that the fresh tomatoes I was eating every day, along with eggplant (night shades), and occasional mild spicy food were probably the culprit to my problems. I stopped eating tomatoes and anything with tomatoes, like spaghetti sauce and all the others I mentioned, and very rarely any sugar and NO processed foods, this stopped the acid reflux! At 78, I take no meds and try to treat everything holistically with good nutrition like eating an organic plant based diet, with a small portion of meat at dinner, and supplements like magnesium (which stopped my leg cramps!), I take Zinc, Amla (the best vitamin C available), and D3 to boost my immune system, and I haven't had the flu or a cold in over 20 years! If you listen to the TV commercials regarding the dangerous side effects of most medicines, like they may cause liver damage, cancer, etc., etc., or even death, then you think WHY would I even consider taking the med??? Follow Dr. Hymans advice and treat things with good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle and see how much better you feel! In 400 BC Hippocrates, the Father of medicine said, "Let food by the Medicine and Medicine by they food." He had it right over 2,000 years ago and then man messed things up with all of the junk food we now eat and toxic meds!!! A healthy lifestyle produces a healthy body! 😊💞

I went very low carb, improved my blood sugar. Started weaning off the prevacid, reduced by skipping every other day for 2 weeks. Avoided caffiene, upped magnesium, then after 2 weeks skipped 2 days between pills for several weeks. Slept with hob elevated too. Had some gallbladder waking up pains, had to go to 3 smaller meals alternated with protein shakes, eventually got to 2 pills a week. Did that for a couple of months until the gallbladder pain dissipated then quit the pills. Still have and tenderness and gallstones but the severe chest pain/heartburn is gone. Eating mostly meat and fermented veg now and no longer diabetic.

Speaking of gallbladder, be careful. You might check thoroughly your gallbladder if does not stone and remove. In some cases, needs to remove the gallbladder. If the stone gets stuck, the gallbladder will inflamate, or burst and/or die necrose, and that's when the urgent surgery comes in place to save your life.

I have a hiatus hernia which causes the oesophagus to pass through the diaphragm, I was on Omeprazole for years and weened myself off it as I thought it was causing me to be anaemic and high blood pressure. It turned out that I had internal bleeding caused by ulcers in my stomach and oesophagus, and that rather than come off Omeprazole I needed to increase the dosage. It turned out I had early stage Barrett’s oesophagus and the condition needed monitoring by having 3yearly endoscopies, so basically I’m in limbo, I worry that if the Barretts oesophagus isn’t managed then I could end up oesophageal cancer, so I’m reluctant to stop taking Omeprazole as you can imagine (even though I’d like to)

I didn’t cut anything I enjoyed, just stopped over eating, managed my stress, stopped eating before bed, drank water with baking soda because dehydration is the enemy here, sleep at an angle with my head very elevated and it cured me. Symptoms disappeared entirely. I’m completely cured. I also stopped taking the drugs when I found out what they were actually doing. Three small meals before 8 o clock. Sometimes Diet change isn’t the answer. Root cause for everyone is different, not every single person but there can be so many things wrong. Diet is just recommended because it seems to heal you to be healthier. Obviously healthy food helps with most issues

Very valuable insight. I'd add that "using the body to calm the mind" (as opposed to trying to use the mind to calm itself) is generally more effective for humans; thus, doing activities like controlled breathing for five to ten minutes is likely to help us sufficiently relax for healthy digestion. Better yet, for the added benefit of burning off excess glucose in our blood (which contributes to all kind of short-term issues and long-term disorders like insulin resistance, diabetes, irritability, brain fog, and much more), we can do a light physical activity like walking "mindfully" (to get the added relaxation benefit) for 10 to 15 minutes directly after finishing any meal (something that I particularly aim for whenever I eat a meal that includes carbs).

Thank you for delving deeper into the root cause of heartburn and GERD. I’m almost 100% sure I have gerds I just had a son and it’s getting to the point where I’m experiencing a awful burning sensation in my stomach and throat all the time i find it happens when I get stressed out or physically stressed, pretty much every you’ve said makes a lot of sense because I live spicy food, coffee is a big one for me I love coffee but honestly if it means I won’t feel like crap anymore I can do away with it sugar I eat a lot of sugar again coffee and sugar go hand in hand, 2 or 3 cups off coffee a day can really compound over a short period of time and I also eat a lot of red meat particularly steak which I usually season the crap out of, it tastes like meaty heaven by the time I’m done. I’ve been getting more books on foraging a lot of common plants previously considered to be just weeds have been used for food and medicine. Unfortunately I live in Canada in the middle of a city so I don’t get to go out and out what I’ve learned into practice too often I’m obviously taking a safer approach in identification. I’m hoping I can make a major change in my life style but I think I need to try and get my girlfriend on board too if I’m going to fix the root cause of the problem.

I only eat steam fish or baked fish with extra steamed vegetables. Still no improvement. I am on Omeprazole 40mg today is day 5 and the pharmacist said it takes 2 weeks to see the effect. Anyhow I have several friends who never saw any improvement with Omeprazole but they did however saw immediate improvement with Pantoprazole which I may switch if no improvement in two weeks. I really don't want to be on any these meds so I am praying it is a temporary event. One thing I am doing is making a Papaya and aloe vera smoothie and I sprinkle 3 capsules of Slippery Elm to help me coat the stomach lining. But one thing that truly helped me and it was immediate improvement was drinking Alkaline water from Costco the Iodine Alkaline Water PH 9.5 + 😊 omg it soothe immediately to the extend that I didn't have to take my additional Tums pill so I am going to continue to drink it and see if it continues to help. 🙏 this is so hard and I pray everyone feels better by the grace of God 🙏♥️

After being prescribed Omeprazole over 10 years ago and basically being left to carry on taking them with no intervention from a GP I fully agree with the flaw in the medical care system, we have to realise that it is both cheaper and easier for a GP to simply prescribe a medication to supress a symptom rather than invest the time with a patient to find the route cause of a problem and solve it that way. Over the years I have tried many things to solve my issues with GERD including some lifestyle and diet changes but still have not managed to really solve it without the dependency I have on medication, recently I have found evidence linking stress and general wellbeing to acid balance problems and I am hoping that easing this along with further lifestyle and diet changes can help me find a resolution to the condition that has severely impacted my life for the last decade. Thank you for this video and some further insight into acid reflux.

THE ANSWER: APPLE CIDER VINEGAR. This will eliminate acid reflux 95%+. One full tablespoon with water (4-8oz.) and again in the evening. (Add lemon juice to cut down the vinegar flavor if desired). All it takes is literally 1-2 days to work!

Love your videos, I'm happy to subscribe! Recently, after a full cardiac workup in an ER, I was told that my radiating chest pain and nausea (and headaches too!) are due to acid reflux. A new drug was added to my already 6-drugs-per-day regimen. I wondered why I should take another drug every day for a condition that only affects me (badly enough to worry about) maybe once a month? So I started with Dr. Google (where else?) and looked up the side effects of my beta blocker, ARB, calcium channel blocker, Metformin, anti-spasmodic for my bladder and an anti-diarrheal, and guess what? ALL OF THEM CAN CAUSE NAUSEA AND HEADACHES. So I was already caffeine-free; I haven't smoked cigarettes in 30 years, and I don't drink alcohol EVER. And I've been on a low acid diet for my bladder for the past three years: nothing spicy, no tomatoes, citrus or artificial sweeteners. So it must be the drugs! Most of you damned doctors are all quickdraw artists with the prescription pads, yet NOT ONE OF MY 5 DOCTORS HAS EVER GRANTED A REFERRAL TO A NUTRITIONIST OR DIETITIAN! EVEN AFTER I ASKED FOR ONE! I've waded through tons of confusing info, only to determine that, for my hypertension, type 2 diabetes, bladder issues, and random bursts of diarrhea caused by frequent antibiotics for UTIs, I should be eating nothing but tree bark and sand. But not too much tree bark, it's all fiber, which is carbs...! So I've switched to lactose-free, lowfat milk and reduced the amount down to one pint (yes, I measure 16 ozs.) a day, from 5 gallons a week. No other dairy except for nonfat, lactose-free and sugar-free yogurt, a 5.3 oz. cup every day. No ice cream, chocolate candy, pasta, crackers, bread, gravy, potatoes, rice, ... can't eat much fruit bc of the sugars. No happy stuff. I have no appetite. I'm taking roadtrips over the major holidays; California is beautiful in the fall and winter, and I don't want to be anywhere near other people who are enjoying real food. So this is now a social issue for me, as well as a physical one! I wonder how well I'll eat on the road...?

Thank you all for your feedback and advice. I do not suffer from this condition but I'm very interested in finding root causes. One that I did not hear about is a Hiatial Hernia. This can cause as it reflux or GERD and all the symptomalogy discussed. It's asymptomatic and when left untreated can cause these symptoms as well. I have a 73 year old relative who I've monitoring his progression and I feel his condition is a chronic one. He has changed his diet, lifestyle and abstained from triggering foods but his persistent voice changes tells me it could be longstanding. One thing that caught my eye was him recently developing pneumonia. I understand there's a correlation between long-standing GERD and pneumonia in some patients. He's now finished with his antibiotic regimen (Cipro) and is waiting to reassess his progress. The treatment left him weak and in need of recovering and his gut microbiome has suffered. In the near future we plan on assessing his microbiota through Genova Diagnostics to rule out bacterias and check for a Hiatial Hernia.

Proton pump inhibitors work very well. However, they can cause vulnerability to C. Difficile infection, which leads to many deaths every year. Many doctors now recommend that patients stop taking PPI's at least a full week prior to entering a hospital, to allow the stomach acid time to recover. That stomach acid is an important line of defense, and PPI's impair your body's defences.

PPIs also delay gastric emptying causing food to rot in your stomach, and eventually leads to SIBO which is what I have now. This has a knock on effect on the colon as well. Doctors are too quick to fire from the hip like Wild West Cowboys without even bothering to figure out the root cause of our acid reflux issues. In my case, I suspect calcium channel blockers (which affect the hiatus sphincter) started my issues off...

I used to eat way too much processed foods and drink coffee more than I care to admit. Me and my mom have been dealing with acid reflux for YEARSSSSSSSS. Gets to a point where I start getting a hoarse/raspy voice, I get a lumpy feeling in my chest, breathing gets shallow, throat tightens up, anxiety ensues etc. I stopped vaping, reduced caffeine to 1 cup a day, stopped processed foods all together, stopped eating late and started drinking 3L of water a day. When I tell you it helps...it really helps. It's all about changing your diet for a healthier one. ALSO there is a video by Dr. Mark Noar who swears behind his method. Get a spray bottle (similar to a nasal spray)...empty the contents and fill it with purified or alkaline water and baking soda. He says 1L of water and 2 tbsps of baking soda mixed. The ratio I use for my nasal spray is 0.004 tbs of baking soda in a 20ML spray bottle. Once mixed, I just use it all day (once every hour or 2). I do one spray per nostril (while breathing in) and 1-2 sprays in the back of the throat (while breathing in). Really helps.

What do you do if you have acid reflux or more like gastritis if you have too little stomach acid? I have often been told that that can give the same symptoms and it is more common to have too little stomach acid when you get older (I am 65).

Catharine, a study out of Missouri, ( pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9272898/ ) found that only 11% of older adults actually had too little stomach acid production. That means almost 90% have no issue at all. This is an uncommon problem, despite many doctors' belief that it affects all older adults. My wife was told she needed to take 1000 mcg of vitamin B12 every day, the very day she turned 65. Why? Because "older adults can't absorb B12 properly". I did my research and found that only 6% of older adults actually have a clinical problem with their B12 uptake. We told the doctor she needs to stop trying to treat non-existent conditions in her healthy patients. My wife has no desire to be a guinea pig.

In most case like what me and my wife had experienced is we used to ate too much spicy foods, drank too much coffee and bottled fruit juices such as orange, grapes, etc. Finally we had acid reflux. After we started eating red and Fuji apples the problem gradually gone in a couple of days.Amazing the problem never came back and plus we don't have to worry on what to eat or drink no more. @@ZFern9390 OMG I'm so sorry to hear this. If it need direct simple fixes to get your healing started, I would highly recommend go look at the videos from kick it naturally on KZread. I was able to go from severe GERD to having my reflux gone within a few days. Now two months later I'm dealing with the underlying causes while being and to not have reflux and heal. If you don't have a hiatal hernia or some other musculoskeletal issue. Then you likely have low stomach acid. This low stomach acid isn't giving your LES the signal to close tightly. If you've gone this long, then you very likely have a bacterial or candida overgrowth in your stomach and intestines. You must get your LES to close first. Usually from adding betaine hydrochloride with meals. I had to take 4,000 mg per meal just to get rid of my reflux. Now I'm finally starting to wean off since the antimicrobials (oregano oil capsule I filled myself, Canxida Remove, Canxida restore, completely eliminating sugar from my diet for two weeks) Once you see all kick it naturally videos, then move on over to Canxida channel on KZread to know high how kill the bad microbes. 1. Get stomach properly acidified to get reflux to stop 2. Eliminate all real and fake sugar (small amounts of honey are okay I think) 3. Start an anti bacterial and anti candida regimen (NOT Rx's) natural herbs and extracts. Canxida ingredient list has them all 4. After 1-3 months, you should be able to slowly reduce taking betaine hydrochloride as your stomach acid is now able to keep up without the microbes neutralizing all your acid I hope you can find relief. Please read this comment a few times to make sure you really understand. Other considerations are needed if you have hiatal hernia or have had your gallbladder removed. Kick it naturally has videos on everything.

I hope you are feeling better now. Igot Covid induced Gastritis. The worst case of anything I ever had. Used acid blockers for a week and made things worse. Coz the acid became so weak, the sphincter would let the vapors up into my eyes lungs, throat. I was crying acid. The pain was unbearable. I stopped them after one week and went on a diet of mashed potato carrot and spinach. With just a small drizzle of olive oil for the fat. All blended. I would make a batch for a week and freeze. Coz the abdominal pain was soo bad. In three weeks things got better and was eating solids.

By reading on bloodtype I found out that AB bloodtype is low acid & I’m AB. We need more acid not less. I drink lemon water every morning and don’t eat anything for about 2 hours later. This helps but I also take magnesium citrate every morning. I also take a pre/probiotic supplement every day. I was actually vomiting bile.

I’m dealing with the same thing. Just diagnosed with BE last October. On a low acid diet, no alcohol, coffee, tea, citrus, tomatoes, spicy foods, onions, garlic, the list goes on. My Dr. told me I will be on a PPI forever. I actually think I made things worse by trying to get off my PPI last summer, which didn’t work anyway, then scoped and diagnosed with Barrett’s. Trying to focus on what I can eat instead of what I can’t because this is no fun 😢

I have esophageal motility disorder. I started to get hearburn after a sweet potato stuck in my esophagus. It was so painful. It went down but took awhile. that is what caused the motility disorder that comes with heartburn. I tried Gaviscon and that made me sick for 2 days, With famtodine after 5 days it burned my stomach after I drank a lot of water to get something down. Next day I took famtodine again and it shot up my esophagus like a squirt gun. In the past I took prilosec and it made me vomit. So still looking since last year in September for something to try. I don't have a gall bladder so wondering if taking Betaine Hydrochloride would help thinking of trying DGL but I am prehypertensive. I did read that it isn't likely to cause increase in blood pressure because of how it is made

I have pain in my chest after I eat or drink certain stuff. Its been a few years now suffering like this, i went to the hospital, all they gave was anti acid. On my own i stopped everything that makes me suffer to an extreme level. I stopped all drink or flavoured water that has bubbles in it. I cant eat cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, wafer biscuits, whipped cream, chops from the barbecue, apricot jam, brown bread, certain beans, tomato sauce, rolls or buns, viennas or hotdogs, I starve myself most of the time because i already know the pain i feel after eating and drinking is so bad, i also burp a lot after eating, i struggle to swallow my spit and i lost my appetite to live, gave up on the doctors in my country, they are quick to take your money and quicker to get you out their doctors room, you go home and you still have the problem years later, the anti acid never ever helped so i stopped taking it. I give up😢

Dr. Hyman. I've been taking Nexium for 15 years and every MD I've seen has told me that its fine. I only just learned last week while reading through some medical journals how bad it is for me. That's how I found this video. I have many health issues including Hashimoto's and I cant help but feel FAILED by the medical system. So i spend a lot of my free time reading anecdotal evidence and medical journals to try to learn more to help myself. In my experience, Dr's are vending machines for the pharmaceutical companies. I wish i could be seen by you

Unfortunately, that's how most of the medical system is. You might have a nerve in your back that has too much pressure on it. You could go to a gonstead chiropractor and that should fix the issue. Sounds silly but think about it. If a nerve is being cut off then it won't be able to reach certain areas to do its job.

I take 1/8 tsp baking soda with half glass water and instantly neutralizes the acid. Take it everyday. I hope that's not bad. Do not take medication for it. Also, butter, bananas, lots of caffein, smoking(do not know how to quit), eggs, (no alcohol), carbonated drinks(can't swallow) a few things that give this.

Lowering the acid in your stomach can actually have the opposite effect and push it to generate more. If you stop, you might end up with more reflux than ever before, which is what happens to people who take anti-acids. It's best to know the cause and address it.
