This was really entertaining to watch Austin. All the best wishes to you and your family for 2019 It had the best combination of things I love - Footage of Japan and Luxury Watch 'Window Shopping'. I love Kimchi Too. Well anything with Chilli really. I tried to make my own once and I think I didn't wash out the salt properly. Spicy fermented Boc Choi Cabbage and salt water. Mmmm

'to the left of me is an area called Tenjin' - says while standing in a Tenjin Central Park. Nakasu is the best place to spend sketchy evening full of adventures in Fukuoka. And if it's summer and you're in sunbath mood it's either Momochi Seaside Park which is usually overcrowded, or for more privacy a beach near Shimoyamato JR station. Love Fukuoka.

Amazing footage Austin. Definitely the most revealing glimpse of the Rolex market in Japan from someone who knows 'the beat' and can speak the language. Consider this for the Rolex supply chain mystery: AD gets 8 Pepsi. They sell 1 to a preferred customer at retail price, and 7 directly to the grey market (local or overseas) for a negotiated price over list. Grey market dealer then sells to the customer with more margin built in, price dictated by the market demand for the piece, which in the case of the Pepsi comes to over 2x list. At the end of the day AD meets quota, grey market gets authentic pieces while testing the threshold price in the market (20k for Pepsi), and Rolex wins by maintaining feverish demand, which allows them to put the screws on the ADs to move even more pieces. Factory is able to maintain extremely low inventory, because every single piece that they make moves. Everybody wins, except the bread and butter end chain consumer, namely you and me. Would be interesting to know if the papers are actually filled out in those pieces that you showed, or if Rolex would actually honour any warranty responsibility for these pieces. Thanks again for your excellent video and commentary. I bet you get over a million hits on this one.

  • @watchsymposium

A marvelous tour thanks. You should hit those pawn shops if you can. Rolex cachet is presently through the roof. During with of last 'financial crisis' (2010ish) owners were throwing serious Rolexes on eBay for what would now be 50% discounts of retail and pre-owned $ levels and I bought quite a few (eg 18038 + president bracelet! I saw asking $5200 BIN price but by the time i was able to properly scrutinze the photos to establish it was for real and pounce on the computer to hit the bid it was gone inside the 5 minutes time it took to do that lol). Happy new year.

@@watchsymposium I am kind of wondering too what would happen if there was another recession. Some analysts are saying that 2019 is not looking good and we're certainly seeing it in the stock market. I would love to get a pre-ceramic GMT, probably Coke, but frankly I am not really willing to pay $9K for one now. I might regret it (I've seen your other videos on the subject), but I'm going to wait and hope that the current GMT fever dies down a bit. I'm not going to hope for a recession (I need 401K growth, thank you), but if one does hit I'll have the money in the bank to jump on my GMT.

@@watchsymposium Let's see. Doubt at this point. Also I refer those online only & will be pre-owned to raise cash on eBay almost exclusively; mayb Lionseek too. If one were to do your tour in nyc the only concentrated non AD watch markets are the plethora in diamond row 47 st and then a scattering of east side independent estate dealers, pawn shops & clip joints that that sell them. Take care AD.

If you come from the States where everybody has a car, and you really can't live without one in certain places, I can see being vexed by the idea of public transport. I think I'm just used to it.

Fukuoka, Japan: 1.58 million inhabitants; 5.59 million Metro - 4 Rolex AD’s in the city of Fukuoka. I recently went on holiday to Porto, Portugal: 238.000 inhabitants; 1.9 million Metro - 3 Rolex AD’s in the city of Porto. And then they don’t believe me when I say they really like Rolex there. Anyhow 2 way different places but one thing in common and that is Yacht-Master II’s. Nobody on the watch channels except you really noticed this. It is not the Explorer II, Milgauss, Air-King etc. but the Yacht-Master II that is really almost always there. Sure I’ll see an Explorer II or a Milgauss but not always. Same situation in Lisbon - Portugal, Düsseldorf - Germany and Amsterdam - The Netherlands. Also a common thing I noticed in Europe are the number of secondhand Deepsea watches. You also showed quite a number. So that’s possibly a global “trend”. So, great video as always and it shows I’m seeing the same things as you in Europe. Little note: at 14:52 you mentioned a Sea-Dweller but it is actually one of the several Deepsea watches in your video.

It makes me wonder if people are buying those purposely to flip, while they are tending to keep other models like the Sub or GMT. It could be that Rolex is just making more Deep Seas, but I'd be surprised by that. It is a chunky watch, so maybe people regretted that aspect of it, and so are more likely to flip than if they got something more normally sized. After the Yacht Master II, you are likely to see the Air King at AD's here. With the third most likely the 42mm Ex.2. I've never seen anything besides those three. Last year, TT GMT's were there, but even the TT and solid gold GMT's are nowhere to be found. When I get back to Tokyo, I'm planning to hit all 11 AD's these, and see what I see!

Austin Daniels Your reasoning makes a lot of sense to me. Similar situation with the Air-King and the Explorer II here. Saw something that has become Rolex typical last Friday in Düsseldorf, Germany. Retail for the Air-King is €5700. Secondhand at a real luxury jewellers the price was €6100. Just 150 meters or 500 feet away at an official Rolex AD they sell the Air-King for €5650 so just below retail. I also noticed the precious metal Daytona’s might not sell well. Saw the same set of 3 Daytona’s unchanged over 2 months time in a major AD’s shop window. I wonder if you also see the Rolex green baseballcap in Tokyo; a really limited piece that I’m seeing at Rolex AD’s (assuming every AD only got a single one; Marc Goldberg got one without tags from his AD).

Pretty interesting experience dealing with Rolex ad in Ginza other day. Off course I didn’t expect to see any sport models in the show case, how ever, I asked one of the sales when was the last time he saw a submariner, and he told me he can’t disclose the information. Lol. I guess person market is way to go now.

In my opinion all these watches are far overpriced. In 2014 I bought my used 2002/03 Submariner Date 16610 Y-Series full set for 4065 Euros. In 2015 I bought a vintage 1975 made Rolex Day-Date 1803 in yellow gold with president bracelet (hidden clasp) for 5400 Euros with box. The same year I also bought a 1978 Datejust 1601 (1570 movement version) in two-tone with two-tone jubilee bracelet, box and booklet for 1825 Euros. All watches are in great condition. Why should I pay such high prices when I can get them for much less? I don't get it.

They are more expensive than in other parts of the world. That said, the price rises from 2014/2015 to 2018/2019 is significant. The days of Subs for less than 5 grand are over, unfortunately.

Because prices change overtime? Rolex has gone NUTS in the past 2 years and the punters as well considering people are stupid/rich enough to buy them. Paying 10-20k for a sports steel is insane IMHO.

My 2007 Rolex gmt master 2 Pepsi now goes for about $9k some paying up to 10. Supply and demand. There are none for sale so my watch will cost more than yours. I should say worth more than yours. Regardless if you want to pay this price or not.

I'd be SUPER WARY of bubblebacks...especially in Japan. There was an insane bubbleback craze back in the mid '90s and the Japanese were scouring the world trying to get them and a LOT of unscrupulous dealers in the US (amongst others) were selling not 100% original ones to any Japanese buyer. Just looking at your quick video pan one can see some questionable dials on bubblebacks. Good thing you don't collect that style of vintage... I think that GMT II w/black bezel is so expensive (at 14:41) because of the two single sticks "II" of the GMT II (no bar across top and bottom) - judging from the quick video shot.

Good video, I would be a tad annoyed by the lack of accuracy with the Explorer 2 as well, but uh yeah. It's the older 40mm right? For a Rolie that's not shmicko, but for any lower brand, even Omega, that'd be more acceptable lol. Nice watches!!! JAPAN
