This is a great video! The part about getting better food in hospitals is so true! We lost my mom last November to MBC and every time she was in the hospital...it was all crap...pancakes and syrup, pastas, hardly any nutritional value at all. So upsetting! Thank you for all of your information Dr Hyman!

I read the book. It was very eye opening and re-enforced my commitment to eating only whole foods that I cook myself. My entire family has stopped eating all processed foods. We are feeling better and better.

"Who knew that walking into the grocery store could be such a treacherous thing? You have to be on your guard at ALL times..." The ideas of "Vanishing Caloric Density" and "Sensory Specific Satiety" sums up just how far these companies will go. Sugary drinks is always the first thing I try to get everyone to cut back on! This is often a first step they feel good about accomplishing, which helps motivate them to make other changes. Great discussion. Definitely gave me some more key points to hammer home with my patients, friends and family. Thanks

Michael Moss' book is one of the best I have ever read on food and nutrition, and I've read DOZENS of them. Can't wait for his next book if it's as good as the first. Good interview. It is possible to change how you eat but it does take some time and effort to become informed. I like their advice of starting by changing with one thing. I believe the biggest downfall that people run into when they decide to "diet" or lose weight is that they overhaul all their eating habits overnight and it's too drastic of a change to be sustainable. Some people are able to do it and never look back, but most people have to start by making smaller changes and stay committed to add healthy habits over time so it becomes a new way of living for the rest of their lives, not just a diet to lose 20 or 50 or 100 lbs. Moderate exercise, reducing stress and creating balance in all areas of one's life are key factors as well. Keep up the good work Michael Moss and Dr. Hyman!

Although this is 1 year old, I am astounded by the number of people choosing to go through life with blinders on. I am one of those... who, knowing the problem, continued to purchase the trash and swallow the poison. It sickens me (literally and figuratively), and I am in the process of breaking the habit right now (thank GOD! because I need to lose about 100 pounds); however I find it very challenging with so many enticements EVERYWHERE (I have to constantly remind myself that they're lies - like being in the MATRIX). Furthermore, I must be extra diligent in reading labels, after discovering a prevalence of added "bad" oils to seemingly innocuous items like packaged nuts. Thank you for YOUR diligence in this industry and your Broken Brain Series is absolutely amazing! I just wish that the services of those involved were more financially available to people (like me) without extensive resources. Thank you for making this information available to everyone, and PLEASE keep up the GREAT work!

Absolutely loved this episode. As someone who works in Marketing at a food co-op, it's enlightening to hear inside sources into what truly goes on with our government, regulations, policies, etc. Marketing can be such an evil tool when used in the wrong ways but it can also be educational, informative, and beneficial when applied by the right people who truly are focused on the right mission. Thank you Dr. Hyman and Michael for jamming on this topic!

I am a senior who gets "commodities" every month. All fat, sugar and sodium!! I asked a rep that came to our senior apts to give a talk to tell us that we could get this stuff. I asked her if she could do something to provide more healthy foods?? Of course she said she didn't have that power. We have food pantry's that do provide veggies and fruit on occasion. depends on what the groc stores donate. most of it however is ready to spoil in the next 24 to 48 hours!! But,my point is... they advertise what a good job they're doing keeping us elderly from starving!! LOL They are helping kill us,which may or may not be the plan ha ha I really enjoyed this video learned a lot.

I volunteer at food box places and I'm shocked at how 90% of the boxes are pasta, macaroni/chz, rice, bread, veg oils, sugar, high sodium and processed foods with no nutritional value at all. Our locations require you take the whole box and you can't cherry pick what you want. Which is crazy...but they know how much would be left behind. Plus our locations give away entire birthday cakes, sheets of cupcakes, cookies, etc from bakeries. What hits me hardest is knowing those foods are being given to children. Their health future seems so bleak. Yes, we're helping folks not starve to death but it's like we're killing them in the long run with health problems directly related to the foods they're given. Phoenix is making some efforts to give out more 'real' food but it's mostly based on how much local farmers are able to donate. Education for the youth is so important if they are to have any chance at a healthy future at all.

great interview! I read Michael's book Salt, Sugar Fat TWICE and then bought the book. It was the information I needed to really understand how predatory the "food" industry is on our society. They can't be reformed because their SOLE purpose is to maximize profits for shareholders. To do anything less would be violating their charter. Ending my processed food diet was the greatest thing I've ever done. I eat Keto WHOLE FOODS and love it!

Clearly the rules on shareholder value need to change. It's not an immutable fact of nature that companies strive to maximise their share price - it's just the way the rules are set up. Change the rules and you change everything.

One time I opened a bottle of Coke and took a sip and the person I was with made the observation to me that my eyes rolled back into my head. At the moment I realized I did this all the time when drinking it or other high sugar/caffeine drinks. What a drug!

Just yesterday my husband and I went grocery shopping and during our walk through the store I became very aware of what I observed was in the shopping carts of many of the shoppers. Bread, sugary soda drinks, chips, prepared dinners just to name a few. My thoughts went to how sad it was to observe this. I wanted secretly to say something but of course didn't. Further thoughts of mine was we need to educate those shoppers and even more so the children who are eating those choices that their parents bring home. I felt pretty good looking at our cart and most of it was filled with fruit and vegetables. Don't get me wrong but we did have ice cream and a package of cookies. Moderation is the key, but overall I believe we did good.

Speaking of marketing to children, the other day I was watching Nickelodeon with my Son (which we don't do very often at all) and literally every other commercial was pushing some sugary thing. I saw Lucky Charms, Ring Pop, Bottle Pops, freaking Pop Tarts!! I was disgusted and very concerned about the ramifications of this sort of marketing to our precious population.

Michael and Mark. I use to ask my kids when we shopped for cereal and drove past McDonalds: Why do you think these food makers are offering you toys when you buy their food? If the food is so good, why would they do it? Seemed to work!

Thank you for your tenacity in working to tease out the truth about Big Agriculture and Big Food working to target and exploit vulnerable populations. Looking forward to your future interviews that will hopefully not include anyone consuming the non-nutritive, chemically incarcerating entertainment foods in question as part of the interview. You are above that. Obviously he was not. Onward.

What an eyeopener, thank you for this fabulous writer's interview, Hyman! Start with changing one thing....I secretly wish the other cooks in my culinary kitchen (prediabetics) would stop drinking their "Mexican Cokes" daily. Just one, nevertheless, they buy for each other, and it's an honorary thing to consume these socially gifted items - and Mexican cokes are "better" than US made, and the preferred choice here in TX. More cane sugar content I presume.

My mouth was watering when he held the chip to his mouth...the funny thing is I rarely eat chips and haven't bought any in probably 10+ years. It's all psychological. It's also funny how I started craving the horrible stuff they are talking about when it's not even something I eat normally anyways. It's my rebellious mouth cravings.

Who is bullying you and forcing you to eat whole food? I didn't get that from the interview. I think we should be able to eat what we want but let us make an informed decision. I want to know why the food manufacturers fight so hard to keep the public from knowing exactly whats in the products they produce. It appears as though they don't want us to know what is actually in the products.

At some point we're all going to die, which is why we should make the most of our time here, and be able to enjoy it in good health. Alternatively, we can get sick and immobile in our drawn out old age, becoming a burden to our children.
