Honestly, making her majestic is kind of a misstep. Galadriel is supposed to be "amazonian", proud, a bit power hungry and cunning. Making her regal, wise and kind (and not 6 and a half feet tall) is kind of against how she is supposed to be.
@williamkrause5831
7 күн бұрын
@@ALookIntoTheEulenspiegelthe majestic vibe comes by virtue of her being an elf. And she was in fact quite wise, on occasion her perceptiveness outdid even some of the Valar. To whittle her down to *merely* a warrior and schemer is forgetting the entire rest of her
@ALookIntoTheEulenspiegel
7 күн бұрын
@@williamkrause5831 Sure, those weren't her only traits, but they were her defining traits. Her name literally means "Man Woman". Portraying her as this kind, wise and exceptionally feminine woman doesn't really match how she is described. She was not "merely" a warrior and schemer, but she was those things and she was them a lot. They should be present in her portrayal.
@williamkrause5831
6 күн бұрын
@@ALookIntoTheEulenspiegel you know how I can tell you’re either pushing an agenda or regurgitating information you don’t actually know? Because Galadriel has several names, and neither Galadriel nor Artanis (the name she most commonly went by in Valinor) means “Man-Maiden.” You are referring to her mother name Nerwen, which meant not just the physical strength of man, but of body and will as well. Artanis means “Noble woman,” and Galadriel means “maiden crowned with light,” so going by the very same etymological conventions you used to lend credence to your point, the wise and exalted lady of light and majesty is definitely a more dominant aspect of her, especially in the third age where she outright goes by the name Galadriel. She is among the last of the Noldor left in Middle Earth that saw the light of the two trees, and she learned magic from Melian in Doriath on top of everything she learned while in Valinor, of _course_ she’d be bathed in resplendent light and grace that awes. And the movies do an ample job of showing her amazonian and ambitious side anyways in a very subtle show don’t tell way, just by her countenance and the fact she felt the pull to use the one ring. She was wise enough to resist it of course, but the fact she felt the desire where characters like the hobbits don’t says a lot. Even Boromir wasn’t as sharply affected by that desire that quickly, his corruption came slower but he was not as wise as she. To tolkien, wisdom and willpower are just as great in terms of strength as brawn and talent, sometimes even more so. Galadriel isn’t inherently feminine just because she’s wise and surrounded by light and grace, just as Olorin wasn’t feminine for his resilience and compassion.
"Do you know why a ship floats, and a stone cannot?" asked Finrod. "Because a ship is less dense than water and a stone is not?" Galadriel ventured. "Uhh... I... I didn't mean literally," Finrod stammered, clearly floundering for a more profound answer. Galadriel tilted her head quizzically. "Then no... I don't know." "Well, you see," Finrod continued, trying to recover, "a ship floats because it seeks the light, whereas a stone sinks because it embraces the darkness." Galadriel's brow furrowed. "Seeks the light? How can a ship seek anything?" "No, no, it's like... the ship's heart is lifted by hope, while the stone... um... is weighed down by despair," Finrod said, desperately trying to salvage the metaphor. "A ship has a heart? And a stone feels despair?" Galadriel asked, her confusion deepening. "Not literally! It's a metaphor!" Finrod exclaimed, feeling the conversation veering off course. "It's about the spirit of the ship versus the stone." Galadriel blinked, still trying to follow. "How do a heap of wood and a rock have spirits? Aren't they just being tossed around by physics?" "It's a metaphor! Why is this so hard for you to grasp?" Finrod snapped, frustration creeping into his voice. "The ship represents aspiration and the stone represents stagnation!" Galadriel blinked again. "Ahh... uhhh... okay." Finrod's eyes narrowed. "You don't actually understand, do you?" Galadriel sighed. "Well... probably not. I mean, I understand the idea that a ship 'seeks' light and a stone 'seeks' darkness if I try to imagine them as characters or something... and I guess I'd rather be the ship in that case. So the moral is that I should... ummm... seek light instead of darkness? Or something?" An awkward silence hung between them as Finrod realized his metaphor had conveyed nothing of value. He shifted uncomfortably, searching for something to say. "Yes," he muttered finally. "Seek light instead of darkness. Exactly." Galadriel nodded slowly. "Right. Got it."

I'd rather have seen Galadriel start taking Finrod to school on the physics of buoyancy and water displacement. He's actually insulting all maritime engineering knowledge by making this metaphor.

Stones are bad? But what about the Silmarils, the stones of light so incredible that they were literally the focal point for the biggest conflict ever to scar Middle-Earth? How about the Dwarves, carved from stone by their creator, who embrace the dark and deep places of Middle-Earth, but who cannot be said to be "evil" or "seekers of darkness"? A few nights ago I watched LOTR, Fellowship of the Ring, which I hadn't seen for a while. I noticed how effortlessly beautiful all the scenes are. You watch Dune (Or any Denis Villeneuve film) and it has amazing scenes, but it's like they're trying so hard to make it beautiful, which makes it end up looking like a fashion shoot. LOTR, however, seems organic, like they made a movie and the scenes just happened to be beautiful

It's because the LotR trilogy is made using mostly practical effects wherever possible, with some notable exceptions. Combine that with good cinematography and you get movies that look real and don't age much. CGI is great for doing things that otherwise can't be done practically, but if you use it as a crutch, you either get movies that look like shit, or movies that look passable for a few years but then start to look like shit as better technology highlights their flaws by comparison.

The problem is even if they would understand the works of Tolkien the show would´ve likely sucked anyway the showrunners have no experience running a project this massive and only got the job since they worked for Jar Jar Abrams who back then still had some weight to throw around. On their own the 2 showrunners never got something from the ground and ROP is their first show that isn´t cancelled in the playing stage. On top of that you have Jennifer Salke as head of the studio who doesn´t care about quality or what the audience wants as long as the "right messages" are in the show.

The thing about Galadirel is that she didn't even need to be ripped apart like this to be a powerful female character, or a morally questionable hero. In the ACTUAL canon of Tolkien's Legendarium, Galadriel goes to Middle Earth in pursuit of her desires to rule a land of her own. This was denounced by the Valar (the gods) and she was banned from sailing home until later after Morgoth was defeated. They didn't NEED to make her mean and arrogant because she had other flaws they could have used. They had a character whose original motives were questionable at best, and turned her into a warmongering narcissistic sociopath.

Feanor was indeed mighty, as well as arrogant, selfish, and cocksure. But these were not heroic qualities. They got him killed, and brought ruin to his family and all his people. To the extent Galadriel was like that in her youth, they could have shown her learning that hard lesson, thus becoming who she is in LOTR. But the ROP writers seem to think those qualities should be celebrated.
