Columbus would’ve have found a new route to India with a sat nav so Karl is right on that

And the worst part is, Ricky grills him for something Steve said Steve says “he would’ve just found America on the sat nav” then Karl speaks and Ricky interrupts him saying “how would an undiscovered country be on a sat nav”

I guess what he is trying to say is that a satnav takes you on roads that nobody finds interesting, you will never discover parts of the country if you just followed a computer telling you where to go.

Look up complimentary cognitive artifacts and competitive cognitive artifacts. Basically a map will not just get you to where you are going, it will also deepen your sense of spacial awareness, ability to reason, sense of distance, etc etc. A sat nav is better than a map for getting you where you want to go, is easier to use, but likely hinders some of your cognitive abilities.

Well, that's how technology works isn't it? The pulley is easier to use, but your body will learn how to carry much more weight if you don't use it. That's the whole point of technology, to make things easier

He was looking for a western route to India, so either 1. the satnav had America in it already, in which case he would discover it by looking at the satnav or 2. the satnav wouldn't have America in it, in which case when plotting a western route to India it would steer Columbus into the Americas, either way he'd discover it. Not that Columbus was the first person to discover the Americas anyway

Some children cannot tell time on a clock with hands. If satt goes down due to weather some kids have never *seen* a paper road map. There are areas in the mountains even in New York where cell phones have NO signal. Relying on one exclusively can get you in some trouble.

This isn't some 4-week mountain expedition. Ricky's talking about taking a 3-4 hour drive on the motorway. No matter how lost you get, there's always an abundance of signs and service stations along the way, so you'll always know where you are, how far off course you 've gotten, how long it will take you to get back on course and if need be, to buy a paper map.Between satnavs, mobile phones and service stations, you can't ever get actually lost, only delayed.

I get lost with sat nav, the one I had didn't know if I was on a overpass or the streets below it was really confusing, now I use my phone and google maps seems to send me the longest way possible or the completely wrong place. I got sent to someones house and they had a sign up saying "Not the Nature Preserve" i'm guessing cause how many people got sent there by Sat Nav.

Tbh the way that Steve and Ricky react to Karl’s point annoys me a lot. I don’t hate sat navs but I agree with Karl a lot here that it is kind of lazy: using a map is a very basic and important skill that you don’t really learn if you rely on a sat nav, plus it just encourages people to go on autopilot without thinking

Well for a lot of people who want to get somewhere and can't find the address on the map, its just easier if they put it on the computer. And if they are in a hurry then they don't want to get all hot and bothered by skimming through a big book of roads trying draw out the best route. Theres a difference between being lazy and being efficient.

Delta Gem typically satnav won't work on rural areas which have straight roads for miles. As for cell towers... you do know it's satellite navigation and not cellular navigation, right? Either way, if it goes out, you can ask someone for directions. What Karl is advocating, is to just go blindly and not know where you're going. That does not work if you're trying to be somewhere specific.

Sat nav is for idiots. When you use sat nav, you only know where it's telling you to go, you're blind and lost without it. When you use a map you actually know where you are and where you're going.
