See, I'm with the partner asking all the refining questions. Doubly so once the original asker says, "What?! Ew, no!" Like...this is clearly a fishing-for-compliments or hoping-for-drama kind of question, which is annoying. The asker wants "serious" thought, but hasn't thought seriously about the question at all. They want more than just a firm straightforward yes, but instantly give an unconsidered "no" when asked the question. It just speaks of a fundamental asymmetry: "You are here to love me. I am here to enjoy being loved by you."

  • @riithewordsmith

    17 күн бұрын

The only point I'd say is that in some cases, it is a real question - in that the ACTUAL question is, "would you still love me if I became helpless/disabled/very sick" but the person asking doesn't know that's why they're actually asking because they didn't think about why the question appealed to them or just lacked the introspection to reach that conclusion, and imo probably a lot of stupid questions about loving worms or whatever could be avoided if the answer ran along the lines of, "is this (would I still love you if you were rendered helpless) what you're actually asking?" And it is a valid question - the rates for guys dumping their wives and girlfriends when they receive like a cancer diagnosis or even just are temporarily disabled due to pregnancy are uncomfortably high. It's not something directly addressed a lot which is why any given woman might not realize that's what she's thinking about when she asks, would you still love me if I was a bug? And it might not be. But there's a good chance it is.

If a girl asks this question, she's probably feeling afraid you only like her for a particular reason. For example, she may be afraid you only like her for her body or for her money. Bugs are tiny disgusting, and insignificant creatures by most standards. This isn't necessarily always true but odds are the girl is really asking "Do you love me for me or for the things you get from me or do you love me specifically as a person beyond the utility it has for you."

Yeah, that guy has a really great point: that will never happen, so why even bother thinking about it. And if it did somehow happen, how would I know how I would respond? The hypothetical answers people give rarely match their practical actions, for many reasons. First is context. Did I also get turned into a bug? Why were you turned into a bug? What emotions am I feeling right at that moment? Second comes down to "Easier said than done". It is much easier to say what the right thing to do is, than it is to actually do it. It is very hard to take into account the fear factor. I know what I SHOULD do, but my actions fall short of that all too often. And finally, there is character growth. Even if the current you would do one thing today, what about you a year from now, or 5 years from now. People change. They can mature and degenerate. Their feelings for you might be too weak to say "yes" now, but after 30 years of marriage, they would sooner get turned into a bug themselves than abandon you. Or, they might be infatuated today, but in a few months realize they really don't like you enough to date an invertebrate.

The “if I was a worm” question has always been really weird to me. It never occurred to me that the person might mean that they still had their memories and personality. I took it for granted that it was “if I was a worm by all standards of what it means to be a worm”. And in that case, no, I wouldn’t; you wouldn’t be you; you’d be a worm. And why would I love a creature that had in some way replaced you that possessed none of the qualities I loved about you. Now, if it is a case of transformation, that does complicate things. There is some continuity of identity, and there may be a way to reverse the process. But the question always seemed more like “if I had been born a worm”.

this is too true. when a partner puts these entrapping questions on you its only purpose is to get an anger reaction out of you. If you say yes quickly they'd assume you aren't being serious and when you defend and probe the questions, they get irritated. If you say no, the partner quickly deduces that you are loving only conditionally. The best answer is to pass and refuse to answer because there's no right answer. The partner who would ask something like this and something similar to this ought to check their head first and ask if they still actually want a relationship.

I'm just imagining the part where a missing person's report gets filed. Things are gonna get weird when they ask why you're failing the polygraph... It's looking like either a trip to jail or the mental ward.

I think when people ask their partners if they'd still love them if they were a bug, they're trying to ask a sort of "would you still love me if I wasn't of use to you as a partner, or wasn't able to reciprocate in this relationship in a 'meaningful' way?" question, but in a way that isn't quite so dark. Even then, people asking that probably need just as much therapy as the one asking it in this video, because they're equating their worth as a person to what they can do for others, and that isn't a healthy mindset.

If my partner was a bug I’d keep them safe in a terrarium, feed them snacks every day, let them crawl on my fingers but I wouldn’t sleep next to them bc I’d be afraid of crushing them in my sleep 😅💀

I wasn't the one who demanded to take this question seriously. Now, would you want to live out your life as a bug or could you turn back somehow so I don't have to figure out what happened to you after you "expired" after being turned into a bug?

I assume in this hypothetical the partner turned bug magically retains their human mind and verbal communication. In this case I would still love them and tend to them for the rest of their life, which unfortunately might be xut short by their transformation into a bug, a creature humans are known to outlive. The situation is very tragic if the bug can't talk to me to tell me how to satisfy their physiological needs. But if they don't even keep their mind in the transformation I'm squishing the bug unless it's a bee and moving on, since then the partner is essentially dead and I don't care about bugs except bees.

Oh, geez, if my partner or even my best friend was turned into a bug, i would put the bug in an aquarium and take care of him or her, either til a cure can be found or the rest of bugs life. Simple, if you love the person. So, yeah still love them. Obviously

So "an actual bug" or a bug that can think and talk like a human? Because I seriously imagined a bug with a bug level of sentience. I think that's a pretty important thing to consider to answer this question. Yeah the one asking the question really didn't think it through.

saw a take on this joke, where he was really into worms. would you love me me if I was a worm? and then he started directing her to websites where she could purchase a worm costume for his fetish. because he was apparently REALLY into that.
