The Real Reason Why Joe's Crab Shacks Are Disappearing

Ойын-сауық

If you’re a fan of Joe’s Crab Shack, you’ve probably noticed that the seafood restaurant has taken a serious hit in recent years. The chain hasn’t been around all that long, but it did expand relatively quickly, as people loved the seafood and ambience. There are a lot of reasons as to why the restaurant has been hurting, including the general trend of Americans losing interest in casual dining. However, there are some problems unique to Joe’s, like employee complaints and dishonesty on the company’s part. Let’s take a look at the real reason why Joe’s Crab Shacks are disappearing.

I can shuck my own oysters but I’ll still go out and eat oysters. Preparing food yourself is a hassle and so is the cleanup after. Not that I’m going to Joe’s anytime soon, much rather go to a local crawfish place. Good part of living in a big seafood city.

2 drinks, 3 drinks, 4 drinks isn't "drunk". Depends on how long you been there really and how long you've spent consuming each drink. In the end they fail because it's like a hooters crossed with an olive garden, at 4 star restaurant prices yet they are cheap with the crab legs and meat and shrimps and heavy on the corn and potatoes. $60 for a crab cluster and a bowl or corn and potatoes, get fucked. It's a bad business model. Seafood doesn't sell itself. Either you do monster portions at high prices or you do small portions cheaply, so it seems like a value to the customers eating the crabs... unless you have it in a hot spot where everyone wants to be seen at and all the restaurants around sell at those price points.. like South Beach Miami as an example. It's tourists, nothing around is cheap and to them it seems a good value. Sorry, you can't open a Long John Silvers and pretend it's fine dining worth $60-$100 a plate. That's just poor business and a recipe for failure.

20+ years ago when I was a kid my family wanted to go to a Joe's but the wait was way too long, about 40+ minutes, so we walked out. I remarked they should have turned on the "no" part of their "no vacancy" sign. Many years later we went to a Joe's because... ironically it was the only place that didn't have a crowd waiting outside. It was packed inside but we got a table right away. About 3 different tables near us had birthdays and they made the birthday person do humiliating things, like ride a stick pony around the restaurant. We all ordered our food and got it in time, my dad never got his. The server kept promising "soon" and the rest of us finished our food and magically now my dad's food gets there. I forgot what happened after that but we had to involve a manager. If I had to guess that happened in 2005 or so, we haven't been to a Joe's since.

The concept was a winning one. I know folks who pine for that seashore atmosphere year-round. There was, until recently, a Joe's in Lawrenceville, NJ, but its location was terrible. There was a labyrinthine route to get back onto Route 1 South which was dangerous with the constant flow of traffic at 55 MPH. The food was good at first. I went there several times dating to 2012 with my fiancée as she liked to indulge her passion for crab legs. The acoustics of the place got to me though. Too many hard surfaces which reflected sound to the point of annoyance. I occasionally pass that location now and the degrading condition of the building makes me sad. It actually looks a bit weather worn like a rustic crab shack (I guess that's ironic) and a bit forlorn too. Personally, I am sorry that they didn't last.

It's been a while since I've been there, to be honest I remember it being outdated and playing the same songs/remixes from like the 90s when they break out and do their little dance (at least the location I went to in Newport Beach which is gone now), the food I don't remember being all that great either.

Why are restaurants tanking? It used to be that a you would go out to a nice restaurant to get food that was better than what you could cook at home and you were willing to spend premium money on it. Now the food is worse than what you cook at home and you still are paying a premium for it. Why pay $30 for a gristly steak, with a dry baked potato and limp veggies? Or $40 for thawed out crab legs that are boiled to death and put under a heat lamp only to be shoved a half hour later onto a plate with greasy fries.

Now this is in the city in Kansas City, ik it's only anecdotal. All I'm saying is that is one of the main reasons they don't let you know they are closing. I apologise if I came off like a dick. If they treat everyone the way we were treated I can imagine why they're closing. We were there for our 25th anniversary (told the server). We placed our order and half our later we had only received our drinks. When we asked what was going on they said there was a large group that came in a few minutes after our order was placed and they were getting those orders out first. Well, that steamed us - when we went to leave they still charged us for the drinks - most places will comp. them to where you'll decide to give them another try. I'll NEVER set foot in there again. We went to Black Angus and received 300% better service and the food was brought to our table w/in a short time of ordering.

There was proof we did switch and the person who was working my shift did no call no show and they said it was my fault. How was I supposed to know she wasn’t going to show up. I wasn’t on the schedule and I called Joe’s and asked to speak to one of the managers, they told me to not call because I got fired for no call no show. Guess what? I dreamed of going to Joe's (not then yet available in my state) cuz of the commercials, which showed a casually classy atmosphere, kinda like Friday's. You know, you put on a nicer shirt, but not your finest silks. When my parents treated me on a trip to Orlando, I was shocked. It looked like an old outdoor quick-stop eatery I'd see in New England, with crappy decor and NO sound absorption qualities! This was worse when one finally came to my hometown - couldn't have a conversation with my dad a table width away from me! I've never had a bad meal (I got the crab pots), but my family never had a good one! And after the initial amusement of seeing the waitstaff dance, it become very vexing when you've already been waiting for a refill/more napkins/whatever

The Joes Crab Shack near me in Gaithersburg, in The Rio had their fair share of bull crap too. They were getting customers SUPER drunk, their service was bad, one their bartenders fuckin committed suicide, that place was a mess. They just randomly up and closed early last year I believe. And I had no idea they were related to Macaroni Grill. It makes so much sense because there was a Macaroni Grill literally DIRECTLY behind Joes. Funny enough Macaroni Grill closed first then half a year later Joes was gone too. Oh well.

My wife and I tried two of these places while we were living in Maryland and came away very displeased due to poor service (the wait staff at both stores were too busy socializing among themselves and friends to pay much attention to customers), bland sea food (my wife and I agreed that we had had much better "sea food" from McDonalds if that tells you anything), and stupid high prices. I had almost forgotten about Joe's Crab Shack until I noticed the title to this video and decided to give it a view.

Years ago I went to Joe's Crab shack in Florida, it was great, food was delicious. Last time I went was a couple years ago and I just didn't like it as much as the Florida one. I don't like corn with my seafood., baked or mashed potatoes with a vegetable or Cole slaw. I am a shellfish lover, its mostly what I order when I eat out, by the way, real drawn butter is the tastiest way to eat with shellfish.
