Very easy to do, WoTC wanta the confusion to sell more to people who want to cheat. They should have added an acorn to the Name line ln the card, just like they have done for flashback in paper and alchemy online. Like just have Un, be the paper equivalent of alchemy cards with the acorn clearly visible on the name line. Understated but still easy to see and doesnt mess up a full black-bordered deck.

RE: Wizards wanting the product to sell around the 22 minute mark. If it isn't selling...should they keep making it? 100% agree with Seth here.

some things companies do to keep higher ups happy so if maro wants silver border and it keeps him happy to print it and it doesnt lose that much money then they'll print one every few years

There was a un tournament at a con i went too many years ago, before unstable, and me and someone else both showed up with ashnods coupon r&d's secret lair combo. Since r&d's secret lair makes you ignore errata and coupon has errata that makes you pay for the drink. You make someone get you a drink of your choice, you bring a Pepsi, you target that Pepsi, declare it costs $100, they now must either concede or pay you $100 for your own soda. It was a blast

The issue with the art/artist matters cards is that a core part of the rules is that all Magic cards must function the same across all versions of those cards. So anything that functions based on art or artists makes reprints of a card function differently thus they have to remain silver border/acorn.

It would also mean that hiring or not hiring particular artists could potentially change the balance of the card, which is so sticky they wouldn't even want the possibility to occur.

It's all part of the silver border theme of caring about the actual card present on the table instead of caring only about the oracle text represented by the card, like black border does.

In my Zedruu deck I thought it was appropriate to use "City of Ass" as a proxy of "City of Brass". Even players who aren't comfortable with proxies see the humor and not only approve but appreciate it. It helps that I actually payed more for my proxy than what the playable card cost, but it's been worth the many laughs from many groups.

Do most people even have a regular play group? I was under the assumption that most commander games were either store events with randomized pairing, pick up games, or online. I feel like it's probably a minority of players that have a regular play group with specific people but I'd have no idea how to prove that.

Sometimes it seems like Crim is in it for the lols rather than in it for the game.

For some people, it's the same thing. They play the game to have fun, and doing a bit of trolling is fun for them. Personally, I'm of a similar mindset. Not quite to the same level that I think all silver border cards should be legal, but I'm all for the sticker cards, warp world, etc. It's a game, and I don't think a card game should be "no goofiness allowed," even if it's serious most of the time.

Peak magic for me was when there was no one else in my apartment who wasn't playing, so I called my dad and apropos of nothing asked, do you like squirrels. He confusedly said yes and I said thanks and hung up.

A lot of this convo I keep going back to this... "Is the juice worth the squeeze?"

I'm generally confused as to why the Stickers mechanic dodged the acorn. By definition of what is considered an Acorn card these should have been included.

Sticker cards: - do not break the rules of magic (unlike Far Out) any more than any new mechanic does (obviously you need to write the rules section). - do not mechanically care about the difference between two physical cards (you can use it to give a card a hat, but it doesn't matter if they already have a hat or not). - do not require interacting with a third human being (they just don't). - they do not have a physical or vocal component. - they don't reference a state external to the game (like e.g. Sir Knight Owl). - and "just don't feel right" is a subjective criteria that just means they can make any cards they would rather be Acorn, still be Acorn, which doesn't apply because they don't think Stickers should be Acorn and it's their call.

Would be interesting to see a new color, but i think the current colors and combination of colors are already pretty all encompassing when it comes to card effects, would be pretty hard to make it feel unique from the others i think

40:36 there's a reason why you can't reference that stuff. Name: causes problems with non-english players. Art: there's a magic rule that every card is equivalent to every other card with the same English name. This breaks that rule. Flavor text: same thing as art. Referencing those things makes it harder to have sanctioned tournaments with a standard set of rules

Cheatyface reminds me of this card game called Schummel Hummel/Cheating Moth where the goal of the game is to get rid of your cards and cheating is allowed but if you get caught you get the cards back. It’s neat and Crim would love it.

During that one month where UnCards were legal in EDH, I played against a Frankie Peanuts deck at my LGS, and it was one of the most memorable games I've ever played.

That's because earl of squirrel is a simple design/good card. It 100% could have been a black border card with a little rewording. But that doesn't mean all silver border cards are good for commander. These new ones really concern me.

I have a mutate deck lead by the Surgeon Commander

The issue with silver border is the range of effects. Some cards, like my current favourite commander (Surgeon General mutate) is perfectly fine in the wider commander sphere. Something like Ashnod’s coupon is absolutely not. This is the upside of Unfinity; it lets you do both.

Back in 2017, I liked it when the RC allowed Silver Border cards to be legal all through December. There were some cards that were banned of course, but the overall month allowing Silver Borders felt refreshing that I think the community should embrace it for that small period of time. It wasn't as appreciated at the time since it felt out of nowhere and because it felt like another way for WOTC to sell more Unstable cards, but if it becomes something like a yearly-tradition, I can see people brew more decks to bring. The new implementation of Black Border Acorn cards break the traditional feel of Silver Border cards where you instantly recognize the cards.

Call it what you want, but it seems reasonable to me. Far better than the opposite at least, getting a kick out of using a game to force your 'friends' to do stupid and menial shit. Unless that was the point of the game to begin with and everyone knew what they signed up for I guess.

I have a surgeon general commander mutate deck, its the only silver bordered card in the whole deck. Most people i play with have no problem playing against it as it's just a bird of paradise crossed with a beast whisperer.

It was not in the regular set tho, instead it was on the basic Land sheet, at a low occurrence rate, making it sort of rare and the most expensive card in the set (for a time at least)

TOPIC Ideas: Discussing Commanders that you think are good/strong/underrated & should see more play, but they are surprisingly low on on EDH Rec, maybe they're below the top 50 most popular commanders. Or discussing Commanders that you thought where gonna be popular/strong but ended up not being that popular or good. Discussing Cards that you though where gonna be bad when they got revealed, but ended up being good the more you play/see them played.

I remember reading a reddit post a while back about someone putting Booster Tutor in all of their black decks just because and no one had an issue with it. I’m probably going to start doing that myself. It’s not an expensive card and makes the game a lot more social by cracking something cool. Edit: Bought 6 Booster Tutors and a playset of Summon the Pack. Let the shenanigans begin.

Much stronger. There's far more ways to cheat artifacts into play than enchantments and Omnscience only affects cards in hand while Lotus lets you cast spells in other zones and activate abilities.

We had issues making two different borders. Normal sets with 5 different borders for each card.......

They could have made it a double feature where one pack has all the illegal cards and the other has all the eternal legal cards

What if there was just a variant of commander with silver borders? Wouldn't that just solve all the problems? Instead of forcing others to play how you want to play, just invite people to play silver commander with you?

I take umbrage with denoting legality of cards by using the acorn stamp since the first sealed commander product I ever purchased had the entire deck misprinted by not having the traditional authenticity oval stamp on any of the cards. So you know there’s gonna be some amount out there that will have that issue.

I run 5 copies of Booster Tutor in my Commander Cube - house errata text changes the casting cost to one of any colour. It whiffs 90% of the time. But opening a Fate Reforged pack and dropping Ugin on one turn... legendary. :)

I think Crim's right when he says magic is a board game, but he doesn't go far enough and say that games are defined by their rules or limitations. Imagine if you played monopoly with a bank robber house rule, when you go to the game store and interact with randos you don't expect them to play by your house rules, the official rules are the fallback to make sure everybody is on the same page. In my experience, "funny" cards don't have the rules support to eliminate ambiguity, to make sure that everybody is on the same page. Eg I was brewing Baron Von Count. If I go on Gatherer and read the rulings, it doesn't say anything about whether or not I can proliferate a doom counter. (You can't, but you have to read Water Gun Balloon Game's rulings to figure that out.) Imagine I pull that tech out at the table without having read Water Gun Balloon Game, the tech puts me at an obvious advantage but neither my opponent or I can argue definitively that we're in the right. Do we draw the game because we can't agree on how the rules work? As much as it's a casual format, we're both trying to win and losing due to ambiguity is a feel bad.

It's just a one-sided landslide once somebody starts winning and has an extreme snowball effect with no real way of gaining back the advantage. There's not really strategy beyond knowing which squares are more or less likely to land on and knowing to buy property as early as possible.

@@donb7519 how? Like the original rules don't give any way gaining capital except passing go and collecting rent. The chance cards can sometimes get you a little bit, but it's not enough to unseat someone once they get even slightly ahead. Early game luck is most of the game, and once someone pulls ahead, the other players just sit around while the player with a lead slowly drains them out. At least with house rules like 500 on free parking or reducing money collected upon passing go once you start developing property, layers are introduced to the game and late game actions actually matter instead of just rolling dice until you lose (assuming you're not the one winning). Personally I like to reduce money collected from passing go to 150 once you develop your first house, 100 for your first prop with 2 houses, 75 for 3, 50 for 4 and 25 for hotel. Makes development more interesting since more stuff doesn't always mean more money. Of course, hoarding houses and never going for hotels so others can't get them is almost always the best strategy and this actually rewards that, but you could bump money collected back up after developing a hotel (maybe to 75 or 100) to incentivise players actually buying hotels but play around with the rules enough and you'll probably find the game to be much more fun and interesting.

Get ready for Smart or Scummy: Acorn holograms & Stickers.

I think the solution to the silver border problem was to make the thin outline within the border, but outside the text and card image, and normally matched to the card's color identity, a silver color for each unlegal (so to speak) card. Just like each print run can support WUBRG and gold framed cards, this print run could have supported silver frames

I think this entirely comes down to house rules and rule 0 interactions(which honestly aren't as common yet), since it's pretty obvious some cards are better left apart(like Chaos Confetti/Blacker Lotus combo that allows you to legally rip apart your opponent's cards), since the Companion Controversy and sideboard/outside the game shenanigans, we don't really care about official banlist anymore.

The last unset sold well & had to be reprinted 3 times as confirmed in Mark's comic con talk. 80% of this is because of all the people saying silver boarder "isn't real magic" & Mark getting his revenge.

This episode convinced me how funny these cards are! If you guys manage to get to Vegas and play Unfinity, please record or stream the game!

In hindsight, it's hilarious how simple the solution was. Just use a different set symbol lmao. It's kinda funny to think about when most sets are coming out with at least one bonus sheet these days.

I'm particularly fond of "Duh" and "The ultimate nightmare of wizards of the coast customer service"

Fun fact about Summon the Pack. Packs from the Legions set are nothing but creatures. But Legions also contains Phage, the Untouchable. High risk, high(-ish) reward.

I have an all silver border deck. Granted, I mostly just wanted to play with Augment so I made it a bit more acceptable for most people by virtue of not including the "every player plays a sub game under the table" or "buy a drink" cards. There's plenty of funny situations without it feeling like a running a joke into the ground, and honestly many effects feel like they'd fit right in black border (contraptions were even referenced in Future Sight)

I not only play silver border cards like earl of squirrel but I also play the mystery booster test cards like “high troller” and “loopy lobster”. Most people like it. (Some of them are too obnoxious to play though)

I hate the argument that "this card should not be allowed because an asshole can annoy you with it". If someone really wants to ruin the fun for everybody then there are already endless ways for them to do that. Besides the way its phrased makes it seem like these people are super common, which really hasnt been my experience.

Animate Object: You animate your opponents glasses. No you can't wear them it is my creature now

There's also the card from unstable "Rules Lawyer" that basically makes it so that you don't get affected by the game rules. That would obviously be too much for legal play.

Recently got a bunch of cards from of used book store where I’m at and one of the cards I found was the un-card called “Rod of Spanking.” I recommend a read of it. Edit: I think this card is a reason they shouldn’t just be legal. This type of card isn’t appropriate to just play with anyone and could make someone uncomfortable.

Right, not only does that lead to sexual harassment, but also imagine your playing with a game at your lgs and a 12 year old is part of the pod. You may even have forgotten it was in your deck. Would be, real awkward. Could also get someone in trouble who plays it without thinking.

silver border is pretty much a draft only produce which make it hard to get into because you are left with dead card that cannot be use anywhere

Also, MaRo explained why the set is all black border: the decision was made too late in the process. Ironically, the set ended up delayed anyway, so perhaps it would have been better to just take even more time to split border colours, but I can see not wanting to backtrack on the decision without at least seeing how people reacted to an actual release, not just an announcement.

Honestly my big problem with silver-bordered/unset/whatever cards is that most of them just aren't funny, or get old fast. If you want to add some silliness or randomness to your games of commander, I think planeschase can be a much better way of doing that.

I remember my LGS ran an unhinged draft when the set came out. It was the most miserable day of magic I've ever experienced. Honestly they're super annoying to play with.

Late to the game, but I do wish they made April 1st the Un-day. Like how cool would it be to make un cards legal on April 1st, then card shops could hold a special Un-day and stuff!

I liked Un cards when I first came across them, and I bought a few of them because they were funny. Everyone should have a Rock Lobster! But anyways, I think most of the cards won't be a problem, but plenty of cards fall under the category of 'do not run in most metas'. I mean, people try to run Mass Land Destruction and Stax in relatively casual games, it's a known issue where people build a relatively bad Stax deck and decide that because it rarely wins at a table full of 7s, maybe it's a 6 or 5, only to for the playgroup to find out that it's a bad 7, not necessarily a good match for a lower power table. I used to play some because I didn't have very many cards, but I think people using them that have decent judgement will be fine, or nobody will play with them. The issue is people who don't have good judgement and don't know what is going to be fun to play against, it's not just about winning, there are stronger things but these are really dumb effects sometimes. I think I agree with Seth, making these black border is to confuse people, to increase their level of play by having people play illegal cards. The list of 'attributes they are looking for' to make a card 'Acorn' is pretty reasonable. As noted, I like weird cards, so playing with Silver Border/Acorn cards seems reasonable, with the caveat that you still need to figure out your power level. For the record, I would prefer people use Crow Storm as a win con over any other Storm win con, just saying. It's big upside would be that you could play it in mono-blue as another Storm win con for Legacy?

I feel as long as the card is well-costed, effect is balanced enough despite being silly, and the card text IN GENERAL is properly placed on the card (and not a mess to deal with), let it be legal... Like, the monster piece cards that you can attach to each other are silly... but are they broken? I don't think so... they are fairly corrected costed as well...

The other thing with asking is like... They say yes, and now they know what you're upto.

I think they should have keyworded it. Like: *Uncard* ( _A_ _deck_ _can_ _have_ _X_ _cards_ _named_ ~ _where_ _X_ _is_ _the_ _number_ _all_ _players_ _agree_ _on_ _before_ _the_ _game_ .) Or: *Ruled* 0 ( _A_ _deck_ _can_ _have_ _0_ _cards_ _named_ ~ _unless_ _all_ _players_ _agree_ _on_ _any_ _other_ _number_ _before_ _the_ _game_ .)

Sounds like we might be considering a 3rd EDH format? Silver Border allowed at all times, Casual where only "legal" cards are allowed and Competitive where also only "legal" cards are allowed? Seems fine.

Maybe they should just make a format where silver border is legal with a banlist for the cards that are too broken to be played.

I actually played a game where someone cast a summon the pack. I was very new to magic at the time, and I thought it was hilarious. I also thought it was a legal card until the play group told me otherwise
