I think what he means is that this definition doesn't specify that the text in question is the "text box" of the card. So the title can be a line of text, as well as the type of the card and the artist credits. With this interpretation, any card with at least 1 line of text in the textbox would have 4+ lines of text. Or literally any card if they count the artist credit and Wizards' signature as two separate lines of text XD

There are a few cards in the game that are technically written ambiguously but if you've been playing the game long enough you know what was intended. Like how Arclight Phoenix says "3 instant and sorcery cards this turn" but you dont need 3 of each

I like how he kept excluded cards with Wordy saying it's to nebulous, when it actually has rules text

Magic cards are not allowed to care about things that change between printings and wordy does. It also tries to avoid things that change between languages which wordy also does. Nikachu was right.

Also I think this is just wrong. On scryfall there are exactly 3 cards that include the term “wordy.” All three of them are the exact same: a card is wordy if it had four or more lines of text.

mtg players have a condition that makes them blind to italicized text in parentheses

Regarding Ambiguity: my friend's favorite commander is Ishai and every time player casts a spell he says "Counter!" I understand he means Ishai gets a counter on it, but when playing with others they always stop in their tracks assuming he's countering their spell.

Actually, the city of ass does work. Most of the time you would not use the half mana, but if you have two in play together they will produce 3 mana. Or if you have an effect that doubles mana production, you could use it as well.

Urza, Acadamy Headmaster actually has a downloadable reference of all the options. They require rolling a d20 to decide.

Im getting annoyed cause he keeps not reading the reminder text. It says right there "(Create or sacrifice Beevles whenever B.O.B.if gains or loses loyalty.)" So yes. As B.O.B. gets loyalty, you create Beevles. Just as you had said.

I wanna watch these streams because he’s the only one who makes this type of content, but he’s so unbearable. He just goes through the whole time paying literally no attention to anything. It’s not just that he doesn’t read the cards, but the fact that he immediately forgets everything about them seconds after clicking away (as evidenced by the fact that he literally never remembers when someone requests a card they already did like 20 minutes ago.)

He shared a funny story about that: Apparently, it’s a problem if an artist for a card doesn’t get paid so he asked for a dollar. Then HR calls him up later to explain himself, the HR lady says that she’ll just hand him a dollar bill as that’s far cheaper than going through the process of a check payment. Maro said no and now he has the uncashed check framed with the card

No "infernal spawn of evil" leaves me sad. If only for the scariest artwork in all of magic. It just draws you in. Smiles at you. Beckons to you. Seems harmless. Seems cosy. Seems safe. But something seems off. I mean that mug of cocoa is far too big for a beast that size, pound for pound this thing is far stronger than it looks. And then there's the steam rising, i mean there isn't a fire around so how's the mug heated? But even with these questions in mind I'd still want to go over to it. It is truly a terrifying beast.

15:55 Yea, mana burn was around for quite a few years. It was officially removed in 2009. I thought had been removed sooner than that. Though I do remember losing to it a few times in the early 2000's. I can't imagine what magic would be today, if mana burn was still a thing.

There's no point in floating mana. Anything that can produce it within the step it's used in can produce it at instant speed anyway. The only instance where manaburn matters beyond yet another pointless counter to keep track of is with fixed output multiple mana sources, such as black lotus, which have been deemed horrendously overpowered, and have largely fallen out of print since before the 2000s. It would also ahut down some infinite combos, but if you have infinite mana, you can engineer a combo where you feed it into an infinite engine to play around manaburn.

@@Deception975 And how many ways were there to tap, and keep tapped an opponents lands? I have only extensvely studied vintage cards up till empires, but I only remember ways to either turn lands into other lands, destroy lands, or tap opponents creatures or artifacts.

Sword of dungeons and dragons you roll the d20 and if you hit a 20 you create another dragon token and roll again

The cheese stands alone was so popular it Made it into hearthstone as well. Its called "Mechathun", tho that one has to die before anything happens.

There's actually several versions of Very Cryptic Command with different effects.

When he typed ‘More or less’ into scryfall search, it used “or” as a Boolean modifier. To prevent this he had to type ‘More “or” less’, including “or” into the cardname.

"Urza, Academy Headmaster" has some busted -6 abilities if you go to the website. Also you can download a list from the website and roll a d20 for each ability (as each ability has 20 options) -"Flip 5 coins, take an extra turn for all heads" -"Put all creature cards from all graveyards onto the battlefield under your control" -"destroy all lannds target player controls" -"gain 100 life" -"Deal 7 damage to anything, controller discards 7 cards, sacrifices 7 permanents" -"You control target player during that player's next turn" etc.

For all the wordy cards, I’m the brackets of the card states wordy as four or more, so it was defined

You can't tell me "Form of the Approach of the Second Sun" is a reasonable card because it doesn't have a silver border

Animate Library is broken in my Battle of Wits deck, though it is cumbersome to attack.

Gleemax doesn’t get cast. You mill/discard it then reanimate it with Invoke Justice/ Repair and Recharge etc.

It was painful to watch.

I'd like to see Last Strike or Slow Strike as an actual keyword, it's intuitive and it could be used to give some extra weight advantage to certain creatures. Also because it would be a step towards Triple Strike.

That BOB one works if: Instead of activating then once per turn as a sorcery, they trigger when you cast/obtain a new one (+1) or one dies or otherwise gets removed from the battlefield (-1)

I've played gleemax in my elf deck when I was in college. It was a funny game and I told the people I was playing with that I would take it out the next game. 'I terror your elf', no you terror his creature. 'Well, I burn you for 10 damage', no you burn yourself for 10 damage. I used aggravated assault with wirewood channeler to give me infinite mana. As a side note, I think mana burn shouldn't have been removed. That rule really made you pay attention.

"Ach! Hans, Run!" Actually works best if you think of the mechanics "Seek/Search", and "Blitz".😅 So it basically acts like a creature tutor, and a sac outlet for triggers at the end of turn which can be abused with a lot of current rotation cards, or just abuse it for etb triggers each turn.

Goblin S.W.A.T Team is my favorite along with the one that lets you take a card from another game at another table and put it on your field

We are going to need a full show that goes over the silver bordered cards you misread as actual comments lol

I realized just now that when I was kinda new to playing Magic, using a deck of cards I was borrowing from a friend, that I played against a guy who used Animate Library as a card in his normal deck. I had known about the silver border cards as a concept, but it never crossed my mind that it would have been one. While sure, it's not particularly difficult to take out, the numbers are very large, and shut down any large creatures your opponent may have. So uh, makes sense that it was a little unfair.

Greater morphlings' change artist ability is a reference to another un card that hoses all cards by a certain artist.

I used to have a "Food I Hate" deck that used the Cheese Stands Alone, a bunch of Fish, and some Eggs.

Grusilda monster masher was one that's a ton of fun that I was was not silver bordered

The first mode on Barbarian Class in the D&D set is pretty much Krark's Other Thumb. Didn't see much play IIRC.

I liked the old flavour text to Booster Tutor.... "Real Men use Arabian Nights Boosters"

43:31 there was actually an old ante card called Tempest Efreet that put cards from your opponents hand into your hand (and you permanently own that card)

Other than "ante cards" an effect will never put something into a non-owener's hand/library/graveyard: 400.3. If an object would go to any library, graveyard, or hand other than its owner’s, it goes to its owner’s corresponding zone

There is a "Shadowbolt" Rainbow Dash figurine wearing an outfit that is black and white. So that one covers all the bases. Except for that accursed pink Giant Teddy Bear token!

To get around this, put the entire card name in quotes, as "more or less" will get you the card you want. You cannot target itself because it is not on the stack yet when you are casting it and choosing targets.

8:10 I feel like that's just a reworked version of "The End", right? Also, an insteresting note that was touched on with the whole "The Cheese Stands Alone" is that many Un-set cards are cards that didn't make a set (for various reasons, such as unsure how well it balanced or didn't see to fit flavor wise) and are added to "test the waters" and see if people liked it. If the card works out, they get fitted and worked into the main sets

In commander you could fast gleemax with Joihra of the Ghitu for 2 colorless

Wordy has reminder text for how long it has to be. It works.

Can you imagine trying to figure out the order of triggers on the stack if someone plays "Incoming!"? Would be insane.

I think that Hydradoodle is a perfect example of a perfectly functional card that has been reprinted identically or nearly identical card. The interesting thing is that most of the older (un) cards have either functionalities that have been reproduced identically in other cards or entire sets. This includes everything from both unhinged and normal sets. There are also some cards that I feel should have been considered completely legal because they don't actually break the rules and actually funcion in game. Another perfect example is nearby planet.

If the cheese stands alone were allowed in MTGO back when I played, I would have used it over barren glory in my atogatog deck. No upkeep trigger on the cheese makes it so much better.

They wanted to retcon it as black border at first but the rules lawyers at wotc refused so they had to print barren glory

Wordy is any card with 4 or more lines of rules text and it says it on the two cards with wordy you covered

"No other card needs the internet to know what it does" right after getting City in a Bottle trivia'd, a card which by nature requires either the internet, or a cheatsheet note list of every card in Arabian Nights

On the command zone youtube show they played commander with "viable" silver bordered cards like you're looking for here. I think Josh used baron von count as his commander.

so if noone said this already the Urza academy headmaster actually has a pdf of the 20 effects that are assigned to each ability, so you can roll a physical die for it if you don't have access to the internet

11:26 There's an enchantment where whenever a die is rolled, add its result to the counters on this card. When it has 100 counters, you win. Might be a lil broken for that if you have ways to keep it on the field. Just every die is a 5/6. Stack that with GO TO JAIL

Hey 1 and a half mana works. If you can untap it the same turn you got 3 mana for 2 taps instead of a normal 2! Unspent mana is unspent mana. A half unspent wouldn't hurt anything. But 2 halves can make another. And lots of things that need a specific value are odd/even or rounded.

Barren glory + Jokulhaups if no other player has an enchantment in play. there are silver cards that cost half a mana in their cost, and if you have something that doubles your mana you get 3 mana so it works to play with it.

You can also oblivion ring the barren glory and cast apocalypse which handles all permanents plus your hand. Also jokulhaups doesn't hit Planeswalkers.

City of Ass was made to make Little Girl (from the same set) playable.

The reason "Very Cryptic Command (a)" cares about Wayne England's art is because he was the artist that did the art for the original Cryptic Command, and the art used on Very Cryptic Command (a) was the last piece done by Wayne before he passed away (and is why it's unfinished art). Very Cryptic Command (b), (c), (d), and (e) all have different effects, and it's the primary reason they're silver border. (having five mechanically different cards with the same name)

Nikachu : Urza, Academy Headmaster...This isn't allowed because you need the internet! Also Nikachu (1 minute beforehand) : City in a bottle, yes it destroys any cards in play that were originally printed in the Arabian Knights expansion, this is fine.

For infinity elemental could you not just throw up a 5/5 with first strike to counter it?

This is just one of those cards where it's an easy concept but it's just too complex to write in Magic jargon to make sense. My interpretation of it was that if it deals combat damage or "damage equal to its power" to a player, that player loses.

Ah, but you have to remember infinity elemental's power is actually infinite so is larger than all the finitely large numbers we name

I always thought they should have used the term "1/1 bonus" instead of +1/+1 counters. For example: Landfa triggers, "I put another one one bonus on my Fearless Fledgling. He know has 5 one one bonuses on him. I attack for 6"

You can cycle Blast from the Past and pay the madness cost since cycling = discard. Result: 1RR instant. Draw a card, deal 2 damage to target. IIRC Buyback doesn’t work with Flashback.

I still dont get the flavor text for more or less

@Nikachu MTG Live actually B-I-N-G-O does work basically every three rows adds up to +9/+9 so if you get all 8 rows after casting spells mana value 0-9 its a 73/73 with trample the issue is that you need to play 9 spells.

8:42 I mean, there is Nicol Bolas the Arisen, which can exile all but the bottom card of your opponent's library for 12 loyalty, so I don't think this card is actually that bad.

Do mana pools still exist? I haven't really played since around fifth edition, and I understand that manaburn and the stack are gone, so I assumed mana pools are gone too... but haven't checked.

Mana pools aren't gone, the card writers just stopped calling it "mana pool" because it was confusing to new players.

You can still float mana, it still disappeares with at end of step, it no longer burns you. Stack is unchanged, but damage is no longer a separate element on the stack.

You can change names with the word one

Look at Me, I'm the DCI could work. It could effectively work like Memoricide, except it hits the sideboard, the cards get exiled face-down, and they remain exiled for the remainder of the match. City of Ass could work as well. Make it a City of Brass that can add 3 mana by tapping 2 of them. Like a City of Brass/Cloudpost hybrid.

City of Ass in combination with More or Less "Add one and a one-half mana of any 2 colors to your mana pool"
