    I know I've been staring at Silent Hill for too long to look at it with fresh eyes, but I'm surprised that you guys had trouble keeping track of the themes of Silent Hill 3. -All areas and monsters, as well as several story beats, are themed around common teenage/adolescent phobias and anxieties. Sexuality and cults are the obvious ones that the limited enemy pool prioritizes, but there's also stuff involving fear of strangers, public spaces, getting a first job, cancer, identity, losing parental guidance, general medicine and specific mental health, and so on. If that sounds like an unsatisfying thematic mess... yeah. It wasn't the best way to convey what Team Silent was going for, but that's what they did. -The Silent Hill otherworld follows Heather because one of her two past selves was sacrificed to create/summon it. Said self is actively trying to kill Heather (you fight her as the carnival boss, which is also a reference to an SH1 boss because the second half of 3 is partially reliving Harry's journey) to thwart the cult's ritual. So, Silent Hill 3's lack of cohesion can be blamed on clap-when-you-see-it attempts IRL, and Heather, Alessa, and Cheryl's merged psychic dark world in-universe. Or not, because something, something, psychological horror invites interpretation. I am being That Guy so hard right now, but I hope someone gets something out of this.

    One of the reasons why I'm not that broken up about the cancelled Respawn Mandalorian game is because it's existence felt like the product of entertainment executives approaching art with a manufacturing mentality. Hollywood is adapting more video games, and video game companies are developing more big budget movie/tv tie-ins, in part because executives hope that they can force everyone to become mega consumers of a singular franchise. Factoring in the push to replace humans with A.I. in the creatives process, it is transparent that executives really think they can turn art into infinitely replicable grey slop they can force everyone to consume. I look forward to when all these companies fall apart because culture doesn't work that way!

    Yes, that’s literally all it takes. Just doing TWO games in a row that are the same kind of game. Doing that is why the sequel to Sonic Frontiers is gonna be the best game Sonic Team has made in decades, and NOT doing that is why every mainline Final Fantasy game comes out half-baked and varying wildly in quality.

    Yeah, and FF7 Rebirth wouldn't be as vast if the devs had to redo combat mechanics for each playable character. It's easier to make games look better too if you just carry stuff over. And then there's spiderman 2 having everything made from scratch looking the same as the first game.

    Silent Hill 3 is actually way smarter than people give it credit for. . . . Heather's Silent Hill is an imposition that she must defeat to self-actualize. It's a hero's journey, but in Silent Hill. Vincent thinks he's a hero. Douglas plays the mentor but never helps once. Claudia is the villain but she's so pathetic that Heather can't even bring herself to kill her. Really it's a story about a teen girl being forced to walk through a haunted house before she can kill God. The game's areas are all places a teen girl who lives in a big city goes a lot but isn't particularly safe in. Heather's a badass because she's not trying to survive Silent Hill, she's trying to destroy it. Still not 2 but it deserves its credit

    If it turns out that DQ12 is taking as long as it is partly because of a gameplay shift, that'd be really funny. Because they already went through this exact same song and dance with DQ9, trying to make it into an action RPG before Japanese fans collectively yelled at them to stop.

    Kris calling the opening Midgar section of FF7 the most tightly paced 5 hours will never not be baffling to me. That part feels like it takes way longer especially if you don't know what you're doing and don't have a fast forward button

  • @DemonLordSparda

    @DemonLordSparda

    It's literally the worst part of the game for me. You don't get a connection to Jesse, Biggs and Wedge. You barely spend any time in Sector 7 before plate drop. You barely get a feel for Midgar before getting ejected from it and are unable to return before Sapphire, and the return is even more linear. It also has something like... 60% of the games script inside of it. It feels like nostalgia talking.

    Dan I hope you eventually get to Modded Beat Saber. I was the same way, I tried normal BS on a my sister's Quest 2 and didnt know how it became THE killer app for VR. Cut to me getting my own Quest 2 for $100 on black Friday thanks to overlapping Amazon deals and then I bought the game and then modded my Quest 2 (which is not very hard at all) so i could play modded Beat Saber. Its a truly game changing experience and Im sure youd be in love with the creativity on offer. Id even send you a list of my top picks to download if you ever get around to it. It takes a little bit to learn how to navigate but either the PC version or the modded Quest 2 version will do you right.

    So to go a bit into the reflection thing in SH3 that is esque to SH2. Also a spoiler for Persona 4 as well. I believe I read it's because only half of it is Reflected From Heather, the other half is from her previous life. And If I had to guess the only reason that's happening despite SH3 being one of the Cult Games, is because the Evil God is inside her (Which what the fuck is the God's plan if a monster manages to kill her?) As for a fun Aside, Eddy is an interesting case in that I think he's the only example of one of the Town Games where someone instead of Overcoming or Succumbing to their inner demons, he embraces them, not unlike a certain character in Persona 4. I have no idea what the fate of such an individual is in Silent Hill, cause he's the only example.

One aspect of his speech I noticed over the years is him constantly pausing and trying to rephrase his statements because in order to find the most venomous combination of words you can use to slander something as fiercely as possible, it's funny af.

    Mass Effect's politics have always been kind of all over the place, but the original trilogy always struck me as more "militant neoliberal and socdem" than anything. Right-wingers love the aesthetic and chest-beating of militarism, but with them the "our politicians are useless bickering fools so we should handle things ourselves" part doesn't usually get followed up by "so do you want to join our multinational scooby gang and go shoot some slave traders in the name of human rights?" If it was written by the repubs they would have tried to make Terra Firma sympathetic.

  • @DemonLordSparda

    @DemonLordSparda

    Ай бұрын

    Yeah, I'll never get Kris's stance on this. It is much more aligned with Corporate Democrats and Neoliberals. If the game was Right Wing it would not have unity be the main goal of the games. Udina would also be a hero instead of a villain. Ultimately Neoliberals, Corporate Democrats, and Right Wingers all like the military and the police, and I think Kris loses sight of that. I can not think of a single plot line where a right wing choice is the paragon option. Renegade options are usually the Right Wing or even more often the Libertarian choice.
