I'm really disappointed xhaka is not included in that midfield, James constantly goes on about players the have exceeded expectations and I believe almost everyone in the league didn't rate xhaka as a player. He has had an amazing evolution in his game with his new position and has consistently been one of arsenal's best players this season and played in important role in getting them to the top of the league.

Even in this video, he explains he prefers to pick players outperforming themselves rather than simply going for the best player in a position. Arsenal players are currently out performing their capabilites, like what chelsea did when they won the ucl with a 9th place quality team, they see out performing themselves because of squad chemistry, there are also better players from teams but are the only good player at their team like rice

According to the stats, they scored the amount of goals they expected to score and they conceded the amount of they expected to concede. People surprised because they finished 8th, 8th, 5th, but they had always performed this well since last season, it’s just that last season they never had a full squad due to injuries. This season, they have a full squad and bought the last 2 missing pieces, now they can fully show the world what they are capable of.

@@grumpy_doctor watch the game with your eyes mate don't just look at stats. And you've just said it. He's got double the tackles. That means he's doing more defensive work. He's a complete midfielder. We've seen Xhaka played a bit further back and it's only now that he's been moved up the pitch that he's really excelling. Bruno can be played anywhere in midfield and still be the best player on the pitch. Both have been amazing this season but you're quite clearly an Arsenal fan and biased. I don't support either team but have watched plenty of both of them this season and Bruno has been even better.

i like seeing new teams on the board but when the 2 fighting top of the prem combined has less than newcastle feels like they are unfairly unrated, I like the exceeding expectations but players like cancello, xhaka, foden, and martinelli would start and be newcastles best players. IMO

I know he hasn’t caught the eye, but if Bernardo Silva played for any other team he’d be in the team of the season every year. I remember when he played against Newcastle (my team) and he was by far the best player on the pitch for Man City

@@Gagefelstead ​ then u dont understand ball, partey had been hands down the best Dm in this league this season, my pics for midfield would be him Bruno G and KDB sure with an honorable mentions to Maddison, Odegaard, Xhaka, actually Iwobi and Palhinha, so far, but ofc go ahead and only pick offensive midfielders in a team, some players do way more than offensive output, Partey has barely lost the ball in build up all season and drives and cuts through opponents first and second line of press either by passing or pacing the ball.

This is literally a most improved team rather than the best team this season

Newcastle with more players than Arsenal and City combined.

Even as a shout Joao Paulinha for Fulham has been immense. Our attacking record would be mute without him as an enforcer in the midfield. He is an absolute terrier and surprisingly skilful ball player. We are performing well above our pay grade and the last 2 games have been extremely unfortunate to not come our with 2 or even 4 points.

I thought he was very impressive against United the other day. Really caught the eye in the middle of park for Fulham.

Glad Alisson got a shout, he’s been by far the best keeper this season. Honestly if it wasn’t for Alisson Liverpool would be just above the relegation zone. He’s prevented 7.6 goals this season, closest to him is Pickford with 4.0. Xhaka also should be in this team, best CDM in the league this year.

Im an Arsenal fan. Zinchenko does not deserve to be in this team since he has hardly played because of injury. White should have been in there maybe. Gabriel has had a few shaky moments but has been fantastic as well.

@@makatelli no mate i agree with you he does not deserve to be up there that’s not what i’m saying- you’re wrong about saying it’s not true that he hasn’t completely transformed our system… because he has- his ability to drop into midfield has allowed xhaka to be more attacking and gives partey and the back 3 with Ben dropping in a lot more security, essentially playing a 3-2-1-3-1 which has worked so well for us- he’s also played a lot more games than you think and been so good in almost all of those games lad👍🏻

yea if they do a midfield with a single pivot holding mid and two 8's, like city and arsenal, it's pretty much between Partey and Rodri. No idea how these guys don't see how import each of them are to their teams. Might be the two most essential players in the league, even with the talent surrounding them that's such a difficult position to play.

It's the team of the season so far, not the 11 best players. If it was just the best 11 players, then Salah, VVD, Cancelo, Rodri, Silva, Foden etc would be on here. Of course you would pick Cancelo over Dan Burn 100 percent of the time if you were building a team, but that's not the point. It's just giving credit to players who have done really well so far.

Trippier is a top class player. We (Tranmere) had a cup game against Newcastle and while they didn't field their best team we still managed to take them by surprise and the result was an early goal. From there the team just seemed to lose focus and I genuinely felt we might be in the running for a real upset. Trippier comes on and you just see him instantly take control of the situation, every time I felt us start to find momentum he's got the ball and suddenly he turns the tables. It felt like I was watching him play a board game just making perfect moves and setting up play from the back. Handled the physicality of our game very well which usually takes prem players by surprise. I've seen us beaten up by top class players plenty of times but I can't remember seeing a single sub take control of a situation quite like Trippier.

Usually love your opinions, but think you've had close to a mare for this one. Understandable that you're trying to big up players that are over performing from expectations, but TOTS are the best players in their position from the start of the season till now. Burn might be over performing based on expectation, but but when Cancelo has been as in-form in his performances, then quality comes to centre stage. Maddison and Almiron have had a great month of games (around 2 months for Maddison), but the same reason as to what Joe pointed out why Castagne can't make the team should be applied here as well. Objectively speaking, there have been more players in midfield and attack that have performed from game 1 to now, and would be more deserving of recognition in a TOTS. Final point, and to follow your point about over performing expectations, the team that has over performed everyone's expectations has been Arsenal. They went from "fighting for top 4", to "they haven't beaten anyone", to "they'll lose to the big boys", to "they will fall away before the World Cup". How you do not have more representation from Arsenal is astounding. Still love your content though, and keep up the good work.

Don't matter. This team's about individual players. Performance in the league is about team cohesion, organisation and confidence. The Newcastle players in the best XI should've been Trippier, Guimãraes and Almirón. The Arsenal players in the best XI should've been Saliba, Partey and Martinelli. 3-3. There's maybe an argument for Botman as the second CB but that about it. As good as Xhaka's been he hasn't been better than De Bruyne or Bruno Guimãraes. As good as White's been he hasn't been better than Trippier. As good as Ramsdale's been he hasn't been the best keeper in the league this season (there's a lot of contenders but honestly it's still probably Alisson). As good as Saka's been he hasn't been better than Almirón. As good as Jesus has been he hasn't been better than Haaland. But none of that matter I don't know why you care so much. Realistically Newcastle won't finish 3rd and close to City on points. They'll probably revert a bit at some point. And player's like Almirón's purple patch will end. The team of the season is more likely to have Saka at RW than Almirón its just that so far Almirón has been better.

i like the premise of these "best XI" videos but there really needs to be some sort of agreement on how the players are chosen. like some people talk about the most improved or the unexpectedly good players vs a different person talking about the best player in that position, and usually it becomes a bit of a mismatch or something inconsistent like in this video. personally i would say the most improved team would be more entertaining because ending up with a team full of arsenal/man city players could end up being a boring video, unless the discussions about the positions are interesting. but you can get those when you do the combined XI when the two teams face each other. maybe set out the parameters so the people coming to argue for their players use players of similar quality e.g. unexpected best XI, so you can have mitrovic vs ivan toney instead of one person bringing haaland and the other bringing mitrovic etc. where the obvious choice is haaland

I'm a Newcastle fan and it's ironic that you've mentioned Newcastle defenders and missed the best one! Trippier should absolutely should be in there, but Fabian Schar has been better and more consistent than Botman and Burn. It's mad how overlooked he is.

Cancelo instead of burn, Alisson over pope and this team is pretty good, could argue partey over maddison but its not really an issue

5 Newcastle players!! This just makes me so happy and to see Big Dan Burn on the list too, oh this is going to be our year!!

What you lot need to remember, is the reason there are 5 newcastle players and 2 arsenal players is because of how standout and overachieving those players have been. Newcastle are 3rd, putting out a team that has had maximin and isak missing for most of it, and half of the players who start are steve bruce era players. Best defence in the league and only 3rd place due to a series of unfortunate VAR incidents in the opening month and a half or so, otherwise they could be even higher.

Lol, arsenal have 37 points from 42 available which is a top 5 starts for an epl side ever. Its better than their own invincibles side. They have conceded just as many as newcastle, scored more in less games played and are 12-1-1 and even in the loss they were as good as utd or better. Nobody expected arsenal to be 5 points clear at the top either, heck most dint have them in top 4 at all. It was city, pool, chelsea and spurs coz of conte. Newcastle are 7 or 8 points behind with an extra game played. Aint no way they should have more players in tots when arsenal have been the best in the country easily.

I think the 2 guys must have been sniffing glue before filming this

Pope, Trippier/White, Saliba, Botman, Henry, Partey, KDB, Maddison, Martinelli, Almiron, Haaland. The teams with the best defence are Arsenal and Newcastle and lots of there defenders have been great, though I did struggle at LB and the shout for Rico Henry I think is valid and unlucky not to have selected for England as back up at least. Can't not have KDB and Maddison, so I need a stand out holding player, thats Partey for me. Haaland is the obvious pick and I think Martinelli has been the outstanding player at LW while Almiron clearly has shined at RW. Saka has been very good but not quite as good as Almiron I think. This is coming from an Arsenal fan.

Saliba is Overrated. Martinez has to do it with Lindelof or Maguire next to him which is ten times harder.

I hate when these “team of the seasons” turn into arguing for people playing out of their positions… it should be the best of that position this year. I.e it should have been between Saka or Almiron for RW and LW for people who’ve actually played LW (Martinelli.. )
