Love everything I've seen from this judge so far! I do hope those who work in the judicial system are getting some sort of training/education about the difference between dishonesty and anxiety in general and, specifically, social anxiety. I had to go to court for something super innocuous (legal name change) and I was so nervous, not because I was guilty of anything, but because I'm socially awkward, have an anxiety disorder and don't have experience in a courtroom. I'm glad the judge was wise in his discernment instead of just assuming guilt. Hope there are more judges like this! And I wish the best to this young person - in all aspects of their health

I didn’t think she was lying either, just extremely anxious. As anyone would be in that situation as a young person. She seemed maybe a little gullible, she was just going to tell the judge what the towing place told her. She offered to pay the full amount, so it’s not that she couldn’t / wouldn’t. She was just asking for someone to have mercy. What a great judge.

She didn't have the traits of a liar, she had the traits of a nervous young person in an intimidating environment (court) who is unsure of themselves. Self-esteem issues and/or social anxiety account for the lack of eye contact. Stumbling on her words was probably her brain trying to tell the story, while realizing that some statements could hurt her case - she was pausing to consider what she was about to say. I don't see a liar, I see a somewhat awkward law-abiding citizen who is just a little nervous.

She has the same mannerisms as I do when my anxiety kicks in. I've had severe anxiety since I was a child and repeating words, shaky voice, no eye contact, smiling when I shouldn't, under sharing and oversharing are all tells; not of lying but of anxiousness. Court is terrifying if you've never been, especially knowing that you're going to have to speak in front of people. I think the judge got that part wrong in his closing statement. She was very clearly anxious, not lying. I'm glad he acknowledged that he thought she was telling the truth but not everyone who has those traits are liars. edit: spelling

@Jvc Pathological liars give signs that makes their smile looking fake. For example, sociopaths and psychopaths maintain a prolonged eye contact the whole time, because they feel comfortable while lying, and it actually makes people uncomfortable (especially their common wide eyed stare). You can clearly see the smile don't reach their eyes. Pathological liars who aren't above give other popular signs of lying despite incorporating whole body movement. So yes, I would say it's difficult to fake a genuine looking smile, at least to observant people.
