The Positive Dhamma Feedback Loop

On the Dhamma Hub Discord it happens again and again that people join who had quite a number of negative experiences with practice.
In a sense, they go too far in one direction without noticing it and often hold a view that true practice is full of hardship, difficulty and ``must feel bad''.
While the practice DOES require lots of effort, that does not mean that it must FEEL difficult or joyless.
In this video, we discuss how to overcome such negative states of mind connected with the practice and how to set a more positive feedback loop in motion.
There is no practice without relief and relief-born joy.
Restraining and giving up is a joyful process as craving is oppressive.
Start small and work your way up.
Generalize until you arrive at the most fundamental value/craving.
Experiencing relief/joy gives rise to confidence.
Based on confidence, you can give up even more and start a positive feedback loop.

Exploring the balance between effort and joy in practice is crucial. It's enlightening to see the emphasis on finding joy in the path, contrasting the common misconception that progress solely comes from hardship. True practice isn't about enduring pain but embracing a journey where effort meets ease and joy. This video beautifully highlights the necessity of integrating positive feedback loops in our spiritual growth, reminding us that true advancement comes with a blend of dedication and the joy of liberation from our internal chains. It's a refreshing take on how we can approach practice with wisdom and joy, rather than just endurance. Let's remember to seek the 'right kind of joy' that comes from genuine liberation and not from temporary pleasures. It's a powerful message that can transform how we view our journey towards enlightenment.

As someone who struggles to find any joy in meditation and dharma practice, I found this video useless as advice. You are just telling us to enjoy practice, but HOW? I have not been able to "renounce" anything in a way that brings any joy. I have SOME things which I feel less attached to than I once did (and I have gotten rid of some of those possessions), but I do not feel any joy or relief related to that. I just feel numb. Nothing in this video was actionable. There was nothing in here that I could simply start doing (or stop doing).

How long have you been practicing? Do you try to adhere to the 5 precepts? Like all creative gifts, some discipline is required. Like learning to play the piano or learning to do ballet. You shouldn’t just expect to leap onto the Swan Lake stage and perform a flawless Black Swan. Start small. And more importantly, if you feel that you cannot even start small, then perhaps do not start at all. If you feel that you gain more joy and pleasure from the joys and pleasures of the sensual world, then perhaps it is here that you belong for the time being. There will always be the benefit of having encountered Dhamma - a benefit that can only aid you as you move toward awakening. Why despair?
