The Modern Side Effects of Meditation Were NOT Common Back in the Days

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

As most of you know, the Buddha called his practice the ``middle way'' and as with anything that is in the middle, you can go wrong in two directions.
You can either overshoot or undershoot the mark and end up with something that is absolutely not the middle way anymore.
In addition to just not ending up where you want, there are additional risks and adverse effects that you might run into.
If you have a wrong goal you won't end up at the right place.
Even with a right goal you can go along a wrong path with many side effects.
Craving can make meditation go wrong in innumerable ways.
However
The Noble Eightfold Path can only go wrong if you do not walk it.
Use your suffering as a guide.
Do you really become like a boulder in the storm?

The only thing I know is meditation pulled me out of a 15 year depression in less then five months. I went from darkness and misery to the feeing the best I had in twenty years. I know this is not typical. Also I meditated like a mad man for five years, two to five hours a day everyday and I never missed a day even though I worked a full time job and traveling was part of my work. I have heard of meditation making people worse or causing mental health issues. Right now I practice two to three hours per day. I’m afraid to stop. In twenty years I never met a guru, attended two sessions at our local Dharma center and that’s it. I’ve been a lone soldier on the path for twenty years. Just me, my books, videos like this and meditation. I also practice Qi Gong, Nei Dan and Ji Jin Jing.

@@abereu8405 When I first started the only meditation I did for five years was lying down, I would find a spot on the ceiling, focus on that spot, and concentrate on that spot trying best I could not to blink. This meditation almost becomes a trance at some point and will open doors of perception that at first actually scared me the first time my room lit up like the sun and my ceiling expanded and the room seemed to grow larger. After awhile I got used to it and at a certain point I would hit a state of inner peace beyond explanation. I still do this to this day. Now I do a variety of meditations depending on how I feel. I still do the lying down meditation where I focus on a spot on the wall. I also do seated meditation focusing on the dantien, which is a spot about two to three inches below the naval, I do yoga nidra and once in a while I do open awareness meditation where I don’t really focus on anything, I just watch the mind and pay attention to thoughts and my surroudings. My depression never came back and twenty years later still depression free. I also eat a healthy diet, lift weights two or three days a week and run a few days per week. During the period where I overcame my depression I overhauled my lifestyle, quit drinking, partying and started taking care of myself. I also became interested in Buddhism and Taoism and still read and practice both traditions daily. Sorry I wrote so much but I wanted to give a brief summary of how I overcame my struggle with depression.

One of the big problems of today is noise pollution. Bleeping alarms, especially on vehicles attack the nervous system, causing anxiety, tension, depression and so many of the modern problems. When we meditate we open ourselves up and when we are even more vulnerable to this pollution. Bleeping alarms are a serious imposition on our health.

@@dbuck1964 you just highlighted the point exactly! We're not all the same, it is self evident that some people suffer from mental illnesses and some people don't. The main cause of the people who do suffer is noise pollution. But regardless of strength of mind just like cigarette smoke, bleeping alarms attacks the body. That's what the nervous system is. This affects 65 million people negatively in the UK and has a positive affect on about 200 and can easily be argued does not prevent accidents.

I do agree it’s hard to find a silent place to meditate. In my house there is always a tv on, noise from computers, phones ringing and dogs making noise. About the only time I find is silence is late in the night. Noise pollution is an issue if one pays attention to it.

I one time got into a super deep meditation and tried to astral project or make contact with something outside of the natural world (honestly I can’t really remember what I was trying to do, I was just trying to see what I could do I guess, I was young) and I almost had a seizure/nearly blacked out… all I remember is I could “hear” a springy echo sound, cracks, and felt a really bad energy coming on, almost like I was opening a portal for something to come through or something… it got really scary and I had to snap myself out of it and it was difficult to, I think I was starting a seizure when I snapped out of it… I felt extremely tired off afterwards… never tried to do that again since.

My practice these days is mostly just trying to get myself to actually recline on a couch and just sit down and pass the time. It's really how I'm trying to deal with left over cravings and habits for seeking sense pleasure of any kind. I see where they all lead and they are just not worth it. As for the "orgasmic" meditation? I actually can see a purpose for them. It can help people detach from physical worldly pleasure. Like, what's the point of working to be able to buy X thing or to go on vacation when you can learn to have all of those good feelings whenever you want? We really just want to feelings that come from getting what we want anyway. Then the thing or event becomes worthless to us for the most part and we just want more. (unless we are cultivating enjoyment of said thing which is a good practice in my book). ... Because it shows you that lasting joy is something that you HAVE to cultivate in the first place. Which then can help you learn to just cultivate joy whenever you want to. And after awhile of that? Realize it's also not permanent and not really worth it. Hence why I just now recline and pass time and watch my body goto sleep, then end up in a lucid dreaming state where I'm just aware of everything and utterly not attached. If only I could do it for longer then an hour.

When developing genuine practice like this, sloth and torpor is indeed a common hindrance. It's like the mind uses it when it realises that craving for sensuality truly failed him. Makes you wonder about the existence of Mara 😅.

@@NothingTheGreat Developing inner joy can help to discard "lower" sensuality. I haven't fully made up my mind to what extent this joy should be volitionally produced or not. Not developing tingling wherever, but just mental joy. Maybe it is beneficial. Really, I haven't made up my mind. Both sides of this argument make sense to me and the Buddha isn't around to settle this debate.

  • @Limemill

    @Limemill

@@NothingTheGreatit’s not really their dogmatism, it’s that the suttas, originally, did not support that way of meditating. They’re just being true to the source. And why this is not supported is a) it can be very addictive and b) because it creates a nasty subliminal view of having in fact a self, an almost invisible self, but a self regardless: the dispassionate observer detached from the body and mind basically gets subconsciously taken for a self. And this is the Yogic understanding, which may potentially lead to a rebirth in very refined realms, but as per the Buddha, it’s just putting things off until later

I believe, in the west one great problem about meditation is that it's not well understood whether it is therpeutic or cultivating. I like to compare it to sports. Of sports we say it improves our health but we very well undeestand that when we fall ill, we likely should see a doctor rather than doing some extra training. Also, if we practice incorrectly we might do damage to our body. This is common sense. Sport cultivates, the doctor provides therapy. And it is the same with meditation. Meditation cultivates, but it is for the most part no therapy. So when we fall mentally ill, we should go see a doctor rather than investing even more into meditation.

Not being touched by the death of loved ones is a sign of progress to the noble disciple and a sign of psychiatric disorder to the rest of society 😂. I'm saying this as a joke, but it's a real concern that people new to Buddhism will face at some point. Whenever people ask me things about Buddhism, I always dread a little what their reaction will be once they fully understand the scope of the Buddha's teaching, especially regarding loved ones. I know very few people (I. E. Euphemism for none whatsoever) who would be willing to try to to give up attachment to their children.

My granny died when i was 8 and she was very stoic and at the time i was into nietzsche and the bible and zen koans around then maybe a bit after... but I remember being into jesus in a very zen way. When the funeral happened an old lady was being very dramatic ...oh isn't it aweful oh dear etc..and I just said dont worry sure you will see her soon. Trying to comfort her. She was so offended. Ive always been quite fine with death ... but I was reallt affected when my little black kitten died because it was because of my mindless thoughtless moment of action where i basically was stressed and said put the cat out and usually i would say put the cat out but put him out the back and check on him in 29 mins. Or i could have said clean the litter tray put it in a room and lock the cat in the room or i could have said keep the cat in the room and watch him and if he needs a wee let him out the back. I didnt do any oof those options i just took the least difficult shortest most careless option because it was my kids exam the next day and we had to sort out his portfolio and i was stressing and rushed and my other child needs very exact information always... like if i said put the cat in my room he wouldnt think of the litter tray and if the tray was full he wouldnt think to empty it so even giving directions to delegate to somone else was a lot at that monent and i made a choice to just put the cat out. I adored that cat. Every time i saw him i adored him and loved his every breath. I dont know if it was because it was my fault for not being careful or because i loved him more than my granny but i was knocked for six. Every death is different. Being above one desth doesnt mean you are above all deaths you experience. Dont assume that one thing is another thing. Every moment is new. Every death is different. You may have conquered something but there is always something else to conquer unless youre living in your own narrative.
