Ah, I was like damn... That wasn't that overplayed compared to the others lol. Awesome video! I'm 33 now, so everything in this video is like middle school to highschool for me. Can't believe American Idiot is 18 years old this year....

Damn straight. One of the many things I love about Mike and this channel is that he really doesn't seem to realize what a badass he is. After singing in bands for most of my life, I've thought a million times how amazing it would have been to be in a band with someone like him.

Sum 41 were metalheads at heart... They loved metal... Even they wanted to create a paralel project metal band... When I knew about em and bought All killer, No Filler and listened their last song had no doubt... And when on fast lip they sing, Maiden and Priest were the Gods that we praised... Had 0 doubt. Such great memories from my youth with that killer album...

It's a shame. We're always behind the curve. Sum41 should've gotten all the acclaim of like uh Bizkit or Little michael. Just a different era. They never want "that generation" to succeed. Pay attention around you. They literally want to "skip that track on the record" hahaha Probably had something to do with the lyrics from Fat lip

This is kinda the same for me with the band house of pain I’m not a rap fan I’m a death metal fan I love bands like crytopsy, macabre, cannibal corpse but I feel like house of pain was made for metal heads and they even played with a metal band, they with helmet

Harvey Danger is my favorite one hit wonder band of the 90s, their first two albums are hidden indie rock gems that deserve a lot more credit than they have and they are one of my really big musical inspirations. really cool to see them mentioned here!

Ocean Avenue is a fantastic song. The verse riff sounds so chunky and I really like how the drums come in midway through the intro with that massive cymbal hit.

The solo for “The Middle” is a blast to play. And man, new stuff from Paramore is rad. Their new single is downright funky with some really cool interplay between drums and guitar.

As a guitarist, I don't see how one can't love pop-punk. It's just fun! It's my go-to genre when I just want to grab my guitar and have a blast. I'm a metal/hard rock guy at heart but pop-punk is too damn fun to play.

It’s funny, a lot of these songs were my kind of teenage soundtrack. Although I was not a huge pop punk fan, they’re the songs that take me back and give me that happy nostalgia. Good video!

Dave is one of those guitarists that doesn't get nearly enough credit for his work. I was super stoked when he returned to the band, they just weren't the same without him.

I wouldnt mind you doing more of these outside of metal riffs. Dope and inspiring.

I consider myself primarily a metalhead, but oh man something in pop punk sounds so satisfying haha and also somehow I know all the lyrics that go over those riffs you played

my favorite riff will always be The Bitter End by Sum. it's basically their homage to Metallica and it really shows

Less Than Jake - “All My Best Friends Are Metalheads” gets me pumped up to this day. Also, I remember seeing Yellowcard and Fallout Boy open for LTJ in Portland in 2003. Hadn’t yet heard of either of them but I remember everyone at the show saying “both those bands are going to be huge.”

This is awesome man! I’m 35, grew up on this stuff and still love it, but the last 10-15 years or so I’ve also been really into 80s metal - which is what I come to your channel for. So it’s awesome to see this here!

That Harvey Danger tune was used as the theme song the the hugely popular comedy Peep Show here in the UK, start playing that riff anywhere in the UK and people will start singing along

This is a catchy reminder of how good some of those bands were at songwriting and how tight some of the playing was. I’m not a metal guy, I understand the differences in approach to music but enjoy the immediacy of punk and hardcore. One thing I struggle with, though, is finding punk/hardcore educational content. Loads of stuff for blues/rock and even prog genres, but punk/hardcore is always considered “simple” and beneath teaching, but many bands had loads of rhythmic and melodic nuances buried in their playing. Playing fast, energetic music while singing and jumping but also perfectly muting strings is not easy! Would love to see some lessons on punk/hardcore techniques: muting, octaves, syncopation, creating harmonies, intentional dissonance, writing solos. Awesome video as usual, thanks!

As a metal head at heart with a love of everything from TSwift to Elton to Dimmu to Manson, I just love some good ole fashion pop punk.

I can be almost 100% sure when I say pop punk has been my introduction to rock. That, along with early 2000s stuff and well, nu metal... Everybody's gotta start somewhere right? 😊 Therefore I'm super excited you made a video about those bands!

Good Charlotte are my favourite punk band and they usually get left off lists like this so thank you for including them, more than once! My first memories of music were actually listening to them back in the early 00's on a "kids" music channel here in the UK called tiny pop, it was the catchy songs like The Anthem & Girls and Boys that made me like them then and while i still love those songs, as an adult it's their deep songs like hold on, young & the hopeless, walk away, S.O.S that made me fall in love with them as an adult.

This was a fun watch. A Part 2 would be great

Been playing a lot of 80s metal latley but i always end up coming back to the punk riffs. Its so fun to play. It may be straight forward most the time, but nothing beats it.

Man, this takes me back to my college days. The only overplayed song you didn't mention (not sure if it quite counts as Punk but it was definitely Pop) was the song 'Buck Rogers' by Feeder, that thing was on the radio CONSTANTLY! Great song!

All Time Lows first EP on youtube is heavy af. also, the cool thing about learning riffs is that you can hear your favorite bands song with just a guitar. you dont need to buy every single cd or see them live or wait for the radio. the thing about streaming is you can hear it done right whenever you want.

I started taking lessons in 1987 and I guess my guitar teacher got lucky with me. I did like all the shredder stuff and hair metal of course because it was big at the time. But I was also really into classic rock because my dad had a gigantic record collection. And my guitar teacher worshiped Alvin lee. So he would get excited when I would bring in some classic rock songs I wanted to learn. When I was stationed in Germany me and some Army Buddies formed a band and we would play dammit by Blink-182 all kinds of other stuff. We were all pretty well versed. Miss those guys best band I was ever in

Harvey danger are a cracking band! Flagpole sitta featured in American pie. That's probably what lead to a lot of exposure for those guys.

Frikin love Sum 41. When All Killer No Filler dropped in 2001 it didn't leave my CD player for over 6 months. Great tunes, great playing!

The resurgence of all this yesteryear pop-punk sure is nostalgic; driving riffs with uplifting melodies and sing along choruses... the sound of youthful colors casting a hopeful sunrise of all the many memories, love and adventure life was about to bring. Lies. All lies. I listen to black metal now.

The first riff I ever learned on guitar was the main riff from "96 quite bitter beings". In fact just about all the riffs from that band are worth learning and super catchy and fun.

CKY has so much banger riffs. I was blown away the first time i heard 96 beings. Also the ultimate skate punk band, Jesse Margera plays there too.

3:18! Props for showing love to American Hi-Fi! That's the 1st song I heard from them too and I always remember those lyrics too. At the start of the music video is a parody of Heavy Metal Parking Lot.

When I was younger I was really into New Found Glory, my three favourite songs were "My Friends Over You", "Head On Collision" and "Understatement". It's a shame that their guitarist turned out the way he did but their music reminds me of my school days.

I am from the 80's Metal Generation but I was entertained by quite a few pop punk songs. I would say my favorite song is Brick By Boring Brick by Paramore. It has that catchy cinematic thing that This is War has from the end of Dragon Age Origins.

And finishing on bass!! 💪💪👊👊🤘🤘

Wendy Clear is one of my favs to play / Want You Bad (Offspring) is another . Good Times All .

For so many guitar virtuosos. The punk boys showed them the way to get inspired. They never get enough credit.

I recommend checking out some Billy Talent songs, one of the best bands of that era, amazing guitar parts as well as beautiful harmonies

Pop punk riffs are basically metal riffs in the major scale & vice versa. Take a pop punk riff, convert to Aeolian scale = metal riff

I miss old school cool shit like Bad Religion, No Use For A Name, Nofx, Millencolin... As a metalhead at those time, discovering those kind of music at the early 90's blew my mind... Loved it... And it really opened my closed metal head to be open to other styles...

Fun story, I had totally written MCR off as annoying and dumb because the only thing I had heard from them was "I'm Not Okay" about 10,000 times and was totally over it. Then at work one night at work my manager put some music on over the PA while we were closing up, and I heard the craziest stuff that was like someone hired Queen to write a rock/metal/punk opera and I was blown away by how huge, heavy and *beautiful* it all was. By the time the album was halfway through I hunted my manager down and asked him who the hell we were listening to because it was incredible. He told me it was My Chemical Romance's new album The Black Parade. Needless to say my mind was blown, and I immediately sought out the rest of their stuff to see what I had been missing out on. When I heard Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge I like...almost was mad at how good it was, only because I had slept on this amazing band all those years. I guess the lesson is that it's cool what can happen when you approach something without preconceived notions. (Also I told my sister about it, and she confirmed that even MVR fans were kind of 50/50 on I'm Not Okay lol)

Some of the best pop punk riffs come from a band called August is Falling. You should check them out, they are great to learn and teach on guitar too.

That Dear Maria riff was the first I ever learned and even though I don’t consider myself a fan of that band anymore, All Time Low used to have really fun, simple, catchy riffs.

Definitely check out Try Honesty by Billy Talent! They are very underrated still to this day,

It’s crazy and there’s no Hit the Lights songs. Their riffs from skip school start fights ,or from summer bones are infectious and inspiring at the same time.

So happy u included American Hi-Fi, super overlooked band! New Found Glory are also super underrated but not as much as them

Pop punk is a guitar teachers bests friend for teaching newer students. Also, just a lot of fun to play!!!

I would like you to give lessons on an old post punk band called Kino, they were Russian during the Soviet era and all they're song are really good. Great song writing from Viktor Tsoi. I'd love to see your take on them.

So…as a huge Ramones fan I was initially a little irked at Green Day and Blink, getting so much mileage out of things. But now I’m a fan of their stuff too.

I love Flagpole Sitta. It always a more indie feel to me than pop punk. Here in the UK it's best known as the theme tune to the comedy program Peep Show.

The only closest thing to pop punk on that record is probably 'My Direction' but yes I agree.

Have you ever listened to Kalmah? They started around the same time.

The greatest pop punk band will always be The Descendents. They were the pioneers of it.

Anything off of dude ranch…but my favorite riffs are all probably off of enemy of the state with going away to college and dysentery Gary.
