Lyrics:
There is no political solution
To our troubled evolution
Have no faith in constitution
There is no bloody revolution
We are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Our so-called leaders speak
With words they try to jail you
They subjugate the meek
But it's the rhetoric of failure
We are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Where does the answer lie?
Living from day to day
If it's something we can't buy
There must be another way
We are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world

This song was the one that Stuart said was the hardest to play, “What’s really hard is ‘Spirits in the Material World’. That’s hard”. There is a slightly Middle Eastern influence at play in his unique fill, with Copeland layering in the ‘pat your head, rub your tummy’ difficulty of occasionally omitting the bass drum on the downbeat to create a strange sense of jarring syncopation. As it happens, it’s hard to even place the downbeat, creating a rhythm section that you can get lost in.

Only because my mum told me when she was in her 20s she utterly adored the Police, she was saying how she had all their records and went to their concerts - she then went all quiet and said 'how time does fly'. My heart literally melted. Not necessarily from being sad but I do like looking back at photos from my parents generation when they were our ages (20s) and I always say that if I met them at my age now, we would have been best friends and would have gone to see the Police 😉😉😉

So even in '23, it''s still an astounding track to listen to, never get's old. A great achievment from an era where the musicians recorded their pieces in the song to tracks on magnetic tape, sometimes in one take. That's what made them good )) However, their creative song writing skills elevated it all, to great heights.
