Invisible Sun was an important (video) moment of seriousness for the group. Voices In My Head, and Walking On The Moon, are two of their best grooves, among dozens. Saw their first tour when they traveled on the cheap, to their last when they quit as one of the most successful acts on the planet. Dive in guys, there’s a huge catalog waiting and it’s all good.

Another great choice by your patrons, and excellent material for you reactions. Ghost In The Machine deserves a deep dive. It is my favorite Police album, moody, rich, thoughtful, brilliant, masterfully written and played, and subtler than their later work, which is great too. Each member is a master of their craft--composition, lyrics, singing, drumming, guitar, production. Sting addresses social issues with cutting insight, and uses unconventional keys and composition. And Che is right about the masterful drumming--Stuart Copland doesn't have Bonham's amazing power (arguably matched the The Who's Keith Moon), but his rhythmic skill and precision are unbeaten and widely praised. He is a drummer's drummer. Secret Journey and Every Little Thing She Does is Magic are prime examples of this album's chops---check out ELTSDIM's key--wow. Thanks for having me along. All my best to you and your families.

Ghost in the Machine. The whole album is good IMO. Good to chill to at the end of the day with the lights turned down and maybe enjoying a cold one and just drifting on the sound. This might be the best song on the album. Their album Synchronicity is also good, but mostly a faster, louder sound with a couple odd but still memorable songs thrown in.

They would kill me for a cigarette, but I don't even wanna die just yet. Not really a huge fan but this and 'Voices Inside My Head' are 2 favorites of theirs. Interesting side note The Police was Jason Bonham's favorite band as a kid and thought Zeppelin was passé and were a bunch of old foggies. He asked his Dad John Bonham (Zeppelin's drummer) to take him to their concert. He did and while back stage the elder accidentally stepped on Sting's (Police vocalist) shoes. Sting told Bonham: said "Hey man don't step on my blue suede shoes." Bonham replied "I'm gonna step on your fkn head in a minute.."

When you're ready for more from The Police, check out "Driven To Tears", which features a tech driven guitar solo, in what I call an "angular" style, that was frequently borrowed from by various artists for decades after. Summers pointed towards a way of soloing that wasn't based on the blues. Also check out "When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of Whats Still Around" which grooves with an almost smooth jazz reggae funk. But, really, when it comes to funky time signatures, check out The Police "Spirits in the Material World" -- and challenge yourself to find the downbeat in it.

The song was quite controversial at the time as it alluded to the troubles in Northern Ireland which by 1981 were very volatile after Margaret Thatcher's British government had got heavy handed with republican nationalists and declared open warfare on them, interning suspected IRA members and political firebrands into prison. A number of them went on hunger strike and consequently died. The song's melancholic mood captured the tragedy of the troubles on the ordinary people of Northern Ireland rather than making any direct emotive political statement about the situation but I recall the video to the song was banned by the British media in 81 as it had scenes from Northern Ireland which the BBC classified as politically insensitive or something though some scenes appeared to be from old BBC news clips.

Not sure why there are so many haters of this song--maybe they can't deal with the somber music and subject matter. "Invisible Sun" certainly isn't the Feel Good Hit of the Year, but it's still a great track. You could never mistake The Police for anyone else.

About the lead vocal during the verse: is that a vocal harmony or an effect that accompanies Sting's voice?

Often lumped together with the Punk movement at that time, but they were not punk, they were progressive rock when rock had been eclipsed by punk, rap, and hip hop. Rock was resurrected with the Alternative movement of the Pixies and then the Grunge movement of the late 80's and early 90's. The Police stand alone amidst all this.
