An amazing day for a great cause. Incredible lineup for an 11 hour show that blew away Live Aid. These three shows The Police did were the only ones where they had another musician with them (aside from Padovani) as Kenny Kirkland from Sting's band played keyboards and sounded great

And the part that this video cuts off is even more symbolic of that passing of the tourch. U2 closed the show that night, and came on after The Police. When they finished this song, u2 started onto the stage. You can see in the last second of the video. Sting takes off his Bass and hands it to Adam Clayton, Andy takes off his guitar and hands it to The Edge. Larry takes Stewart's drum sticks , the Police don't play together again (till R&R Hall of Fame 2005) and thus U2 became the biggest band of the 2nd half of the 80's.

The band was originally intending to make a sixth album, but Stewart Copeland broke his collarbone falling off a horse the night before they were to go into the studio. With Sting subsequently not interested in writing Police music anymore, the Police decided to call it quits after only releasing a couple of re-recordings of songs they had already done.

Yes Bono songs with much more emotion but the words sting more to an Irishman than an Englishman. I don't want to spend the rest of my life Looking at the barrel of an Armalite I don't want to spend the rest of my days Keeping out of trouble like the soldiers say The “soldiers” likely killed friends Bono grew up with and I’m sure he heard plenty of stories of friends imprisoned trying to “keep out of trouble”. He probably had friends that killed soldiers too. I don’t think Sting, although he wrote the great words, could really emote them with the same “lived” passion. Great show though. I was there and absolutely flabbergasted and thrilled when Bono came out for this.

It makes sense why Bono, an Irish musician would join in on this specific song, as it’s about The Troubles, but more specifically the 1981 hunger strike, as Sting was living in Belfast at that time. There are a lot of complaints you can have about this particular version, but the fact that Bono is Irish makes this version feel more personal than the original to me.

Yoko was her usual terrible self - similar to your head inside of the turbine of a jet engine. And U2 was already huge. I saw them the year before - 4/1/85 at MSG - fantastic show! Unforgettable Fire Tour. On a side note - is it me or does this video stop/start too much?

Very similar for me. I also saw U2 in April of 1985 (in Hartford) and then was at this show in NJ also. And I agree with you on all of that. U2 was definitely already blowing up on the prior tour. I also think they've got the date for this wrong. It says 6/15/1986 but I could swear it was deep into Summer, like July or August. When Santana was playing, we were treated to a quick shower and I remember it being such a relief from the heat. And I remember Yoko got booed so badly on her first song, but then she sang Imagine and order was restored in the Universe LOL But the main reason I was there was that I had never seen Peter Gabriel and it had been at least three years since he toured last. My friends and I were all super excited to see him and he of course never disappoints.

Is anybody watching this today and actually listening to the lyrics and how it correlates with the new world order the demi urge. "And they're only going to change this place By killing everybody in the human race They would kill me for a cigarette But I don't even want to die just yet". Then we go back to the instrumentals and they are humming/chanting in uniform like soldiers of war, or prisoners, maybe programmed numb asleep individuals just following to the beat of the tune. "I don't want to spend the rest of my days Keeping out of trouble like the soldiers say" Counting down in the begining like...... 1,2, 3,4, 5,6, I can just see a Regime, or an Army marching in Uniform. So much thought put into this song.

Has Bono ever drabbled in drugs? I know Sting has, as he talked about his cocaine use, and also had to have a nose job after the abuse his nasal cavities suffered.

Hard to know either way. Bono claims he never did drugs but searching online I found another person on Quora who said Bono was clearly stoned or drunk when u2 performed "Bad" at Live Aid.

Bono is not now and has never been a druggie. Why would he be stoned singing a song about losing friends to heroin addiction?
