Stewart Copeland is unquestionably one of the greatest drummers of all time. This is probably one of his least complicated beats and it still stands out.

What a trio. Sting's unique and remarkable voice and songwriting. Andy's unusual soundscapes. And Stewart..a true technician on drums. Police came from an era when people were combining genres. They mixed Rock, Pop, Punk, Jazz, and Reggae. (other genre crossing bands from that era... Blondie, Talking Heads, The Cars..)

Before Sting became a musician, he was a high school teacher in England. Young and handsome, he attracted lots of attention from his teenaged female students, who would take every opportunity to stand really close to him. So he wrote a Police song called, *"Don't Stand So Close To Me",* about the awkward the girls put him in, of him lusting after them but not being able to act on his lust. It's a great track, and has a music video, so I think you fellas should react to it.

Which version would you suggest? Obviously the original is great and uptempo and classic but their remake which was slower and had that deep synth groove always caught my attention and kinda put the correct vibe & mood on the subject matter to me. I love both versions

Stewart Copeland is a phenomenal drummer

"A Captain Save A Ho song!" 🤣I've been hearing this song my entire life and I never thought of it like that. There are soooo many hits from The Police and Sting's solo career that you guys can get into. I love the Caribbean groove and energy of "Every Little Things She Does is Magic", but you can go from there all the way up to incredible solo songs like "Englishman in New York" and the Middle Eastern rhythms of "Desert Rose" (w/ Cheb Mami), and the exceptionally jazzy "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" (w/ Branford Marsalis on saxophone). And that's barely scratching the surface.

IT is Reggae Jamaican melody inspired . The Brits were very much into that in the 70s and made many songs with that formula, ,Walking on The Moon The Police ... 10 cc Jamaican Holiday ,they are well worth a listen

The influence of Windrush on music here in England was huge. The big influx of people from the Caribbean, especially into London and Birmingham, led to Two Tone ska and spread into much of popular music in the late 70s and 80s.

A very large percentage of The Police's songs were based on and inspired by Reggae and Ska music. I think one or two ballads sounded a lot more like R&B with a Jazz feel. ❤️

You’ll hear a reggae influence in a lot of The Police music. “Walking on the Moon” is one of my favourites , and really shows the reggae influence.

The Police were one of my favorite groups of the 80s…so many great tunes.

I was 14 the first time I saw the Police. It was Halloween of 1979, in Austin. Incredible show. They had not yet exploded, so it was cool to see them close up and intimately, before all the madness of their popularity struck. I remember some disc-jockeys in Austin, kept referring to their music as Blue-eyed Reggae. KLBJ FM in Austin, and a radio station at UC Davis, were the first two stations to play the Police's music in the late 70s, and this helped them to become a bit more popular, as they weren't really going anywhere, initially. This was a few years before they blew up in the 80s. Austin in the 70s, and early 80s, was a very cool place to grow up, as punk rock, and new wave were everywhere in Austin. Being a kid didn't stop me from enjoying the scene, as minors were allowed in to every club back then. I saw the Police several more times after the 1979 Halloween show.

Sting is absolutely one of my favorite artists. My favorite song is fields of gold. You should definitely react to that one.

Message in a bottle is an absolute banger

Synchronicity II is probably my favorite Police song. It's not their most popular, but lyrically and musically their best in my opinion.

Stewart was the glue. Andy was the foil. Sting was the phenome.

Sting is sooooo deep with his lyrical content & story telling the song is likely about a Creep falling in lust with a hooker vs a normal guy finding out the love of his life is a lady of the night. Don't Stand So Close To Me & Every Breath You Take are both good examples of Sting's alternative storytelling abilities and making songs with possible deeper meanings than what is on the surface

In the beginning of the song you can hear an off key piano sound followed by laughter. That was actually a mistake. While recording, Sting leaned back and accidentally hit the piano keys and then laughed about it. The band decided to leave it in the song.

You should check out the Sting song “Perfect Love, Gone Wrong.” It really shows his range of musical styles that he is willing to make. My favorite of his though is probably “Fortress Around Your Heart” or “Brand New Day.”

This is a great band , great.

One of the most brilliant bands of the New Wave era. Their early stuff is reggae-based, often with very tongue-in-cheek lyrics, but as they evolved towards their last album, Synchronicity, they expanded their styles and became very philosophical/literary. Sting left after that as he wanted to pursue a jazz-based solo career, at which he was very successful. Almost anything from any of their catalogues is outstanding, but Sting is by far the best songwriter. Some of his stuff is so complex as to challenge most other musicians, but very listenable.

Here's another suggestion, if interested. *"Sting - Fortress Around Your Heart (Option Two) (VEVO)" (by the channel: Sting)* --This song I've suggested is a hit single from Sting's first solo 1985 debut album called "The Dream of the Blue Turtles." the album was a commercial and critical success, reaching the top three on the UK album charts and the US Billboard 200 charts. It features a mixture of jazz, reggae and rock music. This song "Fortress Around Your Heart" was later included on the U.S. release of the "Fields Of Gold: The Best of Sting 1984-1994 compilation album. which also features hit singles from his first four studio albums. (This would be a great album to take a deep dive into, either alone or doing reactions to either way...most of the songs on this whole album are pretty much bangers (IMO). Stewart Copeland did the soundtrack for the Francis Ford Coppola film "Rumble Fish" and it is a percussion masterpiece.

Love "Every little thing she does is magic" and "Walking on the moon" are my two favorite police songs...but "Message in a bottle" is very popular. "Dont stand so close to me" is a Lolita type story and the same melody where "i want my mtv" came from.

Great video/reaction guys. My favorite Police song would be from the same album as Roxanne - it's called "I can't stand losing you". I do prefer their earlier stuff from their first two albums although their later stuff was also successful. I preferred Sting with Police than as a solo artist.

I'm surprised you guys didn't mention the Reggae influence in the song.

and to think they almost never came together as a band. Andy Summers has his autobiography called “One Train Later”. He talks about how he just got on a tune train in London as the doors were closing. The person he sat next to? Stewart Copeland! They started talking and the rest is history. Has he got on one train later? No Police! Their early songs, especially the singles, have a bit of a pattern of a reggae tinged verse and a more rock-based chorus. Walking On The Moon for me is beer best early single but there are many great album tracks of theirs that are worth a listen too.

@@thisisitreactions Hey Corey, in a separate comment I recommended you next react to The Police song, *"Don't Stand So Close To Me",* about when Sting was a teacher in his early adult life, and the girls that would flirt (stand too close) with him. I just want to clarify which music video to use, because they did remake the song and created a new video to go with it in 1986. But you *don't* want the remake. You want the original 1980 version of the song, and the Official Music Video that goes with it. The thumbnail pic has the three bandmembers in a classroom, with Sting sitting at the desk a blackboard behind him. Cheers!
