Love Stewart and Sting, but I've always especially admired Andy Summers. There's a HUGE amount of space in a trio for a guitarist to use, and Andy - like Alex in Rush - always put exactly the right amount of subtly blended stuff in precisely the right spot to make the songs work. Clever guy. 🙂

It's no mystery as to why the Police became a worldwide phenomena, touring and playing in nearly every corner of the globe for the five or so years they were together; three talented musicians, each one bringing their unique gifts to each and every tune. They are a master class in how a trio works best ~ great songs, brilliantly arranged, with enough movement and space for the music to really breathe. The Police were a beautiful blend of rock, pop and reggae with jazz sensibilities tying it all together.

I’m glad I stumbled onto this particular performance. It was outstanding watching the footage of the Police in action during that appearance. I tried paying attention to every beat that Stewart played, the exact sound coming out of Andy’s amplifiers and observing Sting playing that fretless bass of his while he sang the vocal and playing the Taurus pedals.

Spot on mate. Sting is not only a brilliant singer, song writer and bass player. Does this all, while playing a frettless bass. Timing alone on this song with the improv and vocals is amazing and those who don't understand what's going on, it's awesome.

brilliant song. guitar riff on the verse is superb. andy summers wasn't much at solo's but fuck, his rhythm playing is some of the best I've heard. one of England's finest guitarists. love his playing. that goes for all of the police. I know Copeland is a yank but he's a honoury Englishman. one of our very best bands.

for that time and the style the police were going for solos were not the main focus of the guitar player. the whole new wave movement was coming into effect, and that was def not a big solo guitar genre.

Nick Godfrey From what I have read, Sting didn’t want Andy to do long solos, as that was associated with the more old-fashioned rock bands like Led Zeppelin, and Sting thought it was out of keeping with the Police’s supposedly punk style.

Yeah, Andy can solo like no other, and that includes Clapton, Beck, Page, whomever you want to name. He didn't do much soloing in the Police by design, as others have pointed out. They were trying to break with the recent past (60s) when long, flamboyant solos were the rage. Pick up one of Andy's solo albums since the Police and you will see!

A couple of months or so later I saw them at a concert in Memphis, fairly small place that would hold about 2000 people, had good seats, a few months later they came back and I saw them in a small club,it was great. They hit the big time shortly there after.

It is great to see this song played live. As OP mentions, it is interesting to watch and listen to Stuart's drumming. Such control, restraint and such a freakin' amazing groove! I wish I could say more but I'm not a drummer. Andy's guitar playing here is the icing on the cake too. Fingerpicking mostly but chopping chords with a pick during the chorus. Sting deserves kudos for writing such a great song. The Police on their A game.
