Octobans, rims, high hats, snares, the fastest rolls ever, all 1/4 off the beat. Genius. Any discussion of the top 5 drummers in rock history starts with who is No.2 behind Stewart Copeland

I agree, even though I think the mix of Stings composition, Andy Summers hypnotic guitar and Copelands drums is the real magic. It's a synergetical effect. Something new emerges from the combination of parts. I also think musicians don't have to b sorted into sport categories of who is no.1. jm2c

It occurs to me now, and probably wrong, but it sounds like Copeland's whole deal was to play drums live as they sounded on recordings drenched with reverb and delay. Probably decades late to this party, but hey what can you do?

Stewart isn't a drummer. He's the ultimate rhytmatist!
Its like hearing 3 drummers perform together but its just Stewart Copeland!
The police had the best drummer, the best guitarist , the best singer, best song writer and bassist ... more over simplicity and making music space is their Genius.. and this song is the proof...

Right but he does more than just the bare minimum of playing them. I think Stewart saw the drum machine era that we are still in now coming and kinda just said "yeah anyone can play the back beat on 2 and four, but can you play reggae, jazz, rock, and everything in between all in one song? Can you play the drums like you're the Edge from U2 with delays and echoes all over the place? You can't replace Copeland with a machine. Most drummers you can. I think that fear of "anyone can play drums" drove him to play the drums differently. He made a name for himself as a reason people listen to the band. He was an equal contributor and you really don't see that outside of the realm of Jazz and the 60s era where the drummers were just as famous as the lead singers.

I come back to The Police again, again, again. They truly were a band that made some of the most remarkable, and memorable music ever. Hard to believe this performance was a little over forty years ago. Their musical brilliance was just beginning to really show itself. Incredible band.

so what you're saying is they had another album after "Ghost in the Machine" in them........I wish they did. Their early stuff really is very hit and miss to me if I'm not in the mood for it. I think I read they couldn't stand each other anymore at the end......so they split.

Not only do the Police play killer reggae, they dub it out live in the middle of the song!
Stewart Copeland 😵 😮 😲 he’s on a level of his own, he is rhythm, be breathes flawless technique and feel, watching and listening to him is like standing at the base and looking up at Everest and just in complete awe of creativity
They can have all the technology today to make a band good but nothing beats the raw sound from a good band.

It boggles my mind as a millennial that we don't have bands like this right now. The echo effects and reverbs and pedals and stuff that led to this level of creativity for that instrumental break are far more advanced these days and we see nothing even remotely close to this. It's amazing.

Stuart Copeland lives in a world on his own when he cracks the drums!!!!
Truly one of the most amazing live performances by any band at any time.
This will always be "the" Police song for me. Differentiator from anything I heard growing up in the late 70's / 80's. Quintessential Police!
Stewart Copeland is like just visiting the planet - mesmerising stuff!
Copeland is a living genius; a phenomenon!

Man I love the way Copeland plays the drums!
One of the best drummers/musicians/composers ever. Thank you Stewart Copeland.
this is the stuff that amazes me about people this talented, even though these guys are having fun they are actually working, this is their job and they are good at it, they depend on each other and each one performs their part to perfection, its like watching bees building a nest, fucking beautiful.one of the best bands ever.

Three very different stars aligning.
Wow. Brings back memories! One of my favorite songs. Had it all. Reggae, jazz, vocals and the lyrics. Saw them more times that I could count in the lates 70's and early 80's. AS good as their recorded albums were, simply tremendous and better live. Simply the best. Stewart is a God, Sting underrated on bass and Summers just mesmerizing. Rock legends.
...absolutely amazing ,specially when play very loud on the good headphones... This was The Police at the top of their game!
7:09 Sting’s vocals 🤯
Just mesmerizing, the musicianship between these three . I can’t name many bands that can create a sound as cohesive as this. And I’m not even gonna start about Copeland. 👮♂️ the best always
They are the best example of dysfunctional genius at its finest. Despite their lack of cohesion, musically they are tighter than a cello's string. I love watching them create and contribute to the audible bliss that we all are addicted to. I would follow them to the moon to see them perform together...just one more time.

That drum WTF!!!!
in 73 i was 10,my brother brought home Queen 1, and amidst my love of freddies amazing vocals and Brians incredible guitar, there was Rogers innovative drum style, possibly the first time i noticed drumming in a song.I have to say Copeland really does seem to be on some other level than most rock drummers, all Latin and Jazz and rock complexity rolled into one, simply awe inspiring
These early songs are so melancholy. Loved that so much even though I didn't realize it at the time. Beautiful stuff. This version is magic. What interplay between these 3.
The Jazz stuff that Stewart's daddy raised him on, and to which he grew allergic as he says serves him really well here.

The Police couldn't have existed without Stewart Copeland. I was a fan in he 80's but didn't have any idea what he was actually doing back there.
Welcome to the Stewart Copeland show !
this is how drumming should be. holding back, fills in all the right places. stewart copeland was a genius in this regard, like john bonham. completely different drummers, but knew exactly where to put shit. it was ALL ABOUT the song. they knew how to add atmosphere to make a song what it is.

MR.Copeland a true master of all things rhythmical.Love the sound of his kit,and what a beautiful piece of Tama engineering.I could sit for hours and just jam on those octabans.
One of their best......this and bring on the night.....always brings me to the women I have known and now married to :)
I don't know how people are not noticing how stingo was out like a light and still delivered one of the most psychedelic performances ever.
Global pop music masters that did it their way..
Jeez, this is so outstanding...
Possibly duplicating what has been said before but for the record. 2 of my personal favourite ALL time bands namely Led Zeppelin & the Police were soooo damn good because of their DRUMMERS. For VERY different reasons BOTH geniuses. Sometimes because of what they left OUT rather than what they put IN at critical times within their grooves. INCREDIBLY TALENTED.......Words to describe their brilliance for both Bonham & Copeland is beyond my limited vocabulary for sure !!!

Mr. Copeland... nadie puede siquiera acercarse a ese tempo y swing que tiene, un maestro fuera de serie, una leyenda.
Totally' amazing especially Mr Copeland on the drums who is a freak!
Great Live performance, wish they got along now to play live again! Probably the best live of this song !
This song hurts me so much right now, I'm glad that I just met this
THE POLICE FOR EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!
Stewart is a beast
I compliment the taste of my 16 year old self...they were my favorite band. 40 years later I still think they were one of the best.
Great stuff... So cool to see this song live from back then. Classic song, with 1980's embellishments live.
Kinda wild playing a fretless instrument while singing, big up sting💪
Just pure genius

I always loved the Police in the 70s n 80s favourite one was beds too big without you mmmm
Saw them in 81 at Festival Hall Brisbane, Australia. They were amazing and have remained one of my all time favourites
Stewart Copeland. What a great beat man. The guy was fantastic
F**king brilliant rendition of one of my favorite Police tracks. 🔥🤘👍
magical performance
This is great! It's one thing to see them play this live, much less an 8 minute version with an improv section in the middle. I've seen Sting three times but I've never seen him play this. I don't think it would be as good as The Police anyway.
THIS IS THE FATALITY FOR ALL THE BANDS IN THE WORLD IN THE HISTORY OF HUMAN MUSIC

This is my new favorite Police Tune.
There is a reason I love this band!
Very cool performance. I saw this live video for the first time. There is a musical instrument maker in my hometown. At this time, the bass guitar and drums they are using were made by this company.
