The Planet Waves, D'addario O-PORT. Fitting, tests and review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Planet Waves D'addario O-PORT (or oport), fitting, tests and review
The Planet Waves, D'addario O-PORT is a plastic cone that fits inside the 3 1/2 inch or 4 inch soundhole on any acoustic or electroacoustic guitar.
They claim that the Planet Waves, D'addario O-PORT improves the tone and volume of your guitar.
In this video I will show how to fit a Planet Waves, D'addario O-PORT on an electroacoustic guitar and then do a series of sounds test to see if it does what it claims.
test 1. I will do basic open string sound tests without the O-PORT and then with the O-PORT and compare the results.
test 2. I will do a fingerstyle recording of an acoustic guitar with and without the O-PORT.
test 3. I will do a chord strumming recording with and without the O-PORT.
All of these tests I will do using a microphone and the piezo pickup built in to the electroacoustic guitar to see if the O-PORT effects the sound.
I found that the Planet Waves, D'addario O-PORT is very easy to fit and makes a noticeable difference to the tone and volume of the guitar.
When you first look at the O-PORT you would think it is well over priced for a plastic cone, but after testing it I realized that it is worth the money for the potential improvement to the tone and volume of any acoustic guitar.

Spot on; I've owned an O-Port for many years and find it can be very effective on some cheaper guitars, particularly if they are an all-laminate construction. I have a mystery brand dreadnought (no labels anywhere) which is boomy with little midrange detail in the laminate top. The O-Port cleans the sound up very well and helps to make it a surprisingly reasonable backup acoustic. Had the same effect in a friend's all-laminate dreadnought by Morgan Guitars and allowed for better detail and consistency. In my all-solid wood dreadnought by Freshman, and solid-topped Michelsen guitar, I found that the O-Port took away some desirable harmonics. If you have a cheap all-laminate acoustic guitar, then I find the O-Port to be a fantastic wee device, but results will vary with better built guitars.

I noticed on the first tests that the microphone test has a lot of white noise with the O-Port compared to the one with out. But tone wise I noticed that the high register dropped significantly with the O-Port in both instances, but the low end stayed relatively intact.

The O Port won't have any tone it's not designed to have any. It's designed to focus the sound much like a port on a speaker cabinet. I added an O Port to an old Marlboro miles HD-28 copy that has a solid spruce top and laminated rosewood back and sides. I found it made a nice difference in the sound of the guitar,te sound in the midrange was more focused the volume sounded pretty much the same and the boom from the spruce and scalloped bracing was still there. I personally like it. I wouldn't add one to my D-28 shade top because Martin knows what they're doing so the tone doesn't need any help. I really like your review, you gave it a chance and used common sense and had an open mind. Subscribed and Thanks the review. Cheers

Thanks for the detailed video :) a question, 3 minutes before the end you said that the oport gives a deeper body sound, but you also said it increases midrange and it lowers bass, so what did you intend?

  • @guitar-academy

    @guitar-academy

it's hard to describe the exact sound, but is sounds a little bit like your hearing it through a door in that the overall sound is deeper and more booming but the detail in the deep bass and high tones is lost. It isn't very bad, and for some guitars it sounds better. I can't think of a really good way do describe it . . sorry

Gareth says " You need to Trust me" I thought - Never crossed my mind not to. I think It makes a Great difference on a subtle level that many may not appreciate. That and with AGC it is difficult to explain Depth and Broadcast - it is kinda like trying to describe the depth of a colour on a paint job with just text. I could here the difference when listening on my Desktop but not thru a bluetooth headset on my headphones. My LAG 30 has a loud voice but from behind me you can't much tell the difference from a Hummingbird Pro. It would be interesting to try that on one of the cheaper parlor or traveling guitars. I think it would help Fill a room but be lost inside a closet.

Strumming chords, pick up. With it on, it gets a bit more like sounding like it's being played in say a large empty room, hard plaster walls, ceiling, you are in the back. Not louder just an acoustic change. Hard to put your finger on it, but there is definitely a shift, a bit more ringing substain? Or are some strings more strongly represented then they were without? Being pulled forward? I just don't know. Not sure if this is good across the board, say Eagles. It has that sound you hear in a song like Kansas' Dust in the Wind?
